Man Utd chiefs 'surprised' over new £2bn stadium decision after Ratcliffe call

Daily Mirror02-07-2025
Manchester United have been surprised that Foster and Partners', who they have hired to build their new £2billion stadium, have also chosen to take on the redevelopment of the San Siro.
Manchester United have been surprised that Foster and Partners - the architecture firm who will build their new £2billion 100,00-seater stadium - has also opted to take on the redevelopment of the San Siro.
Those in Manchester have fears over whether the company, does not have offices in Milan or Manchester and are based in London, will have the resources to take on two mammoth projects. Sir Norman Foster's relationship with Sir Jim Ratcliffe was key in the firm being picked to design the Red Devil's new stadium, which is due to cost around £2billion.

Foster has said the project will take five years, but with the iconic Italian stadium now also on their to do list, City AM has claimed that there is concern over how they will manage both assignments.

The Premier League giants confirmed their plans to leave Old Trafford and move to a new 100,000-seater stadium back in March. The new stadium will be the largest in the UK and built on club-owned land adjacent to Old Trafford. Ratcliffe said the intention is to create "an iconic football stadium".
The Ineos chief said: "By building next to the existing site, we will be able to preserve the essence of Old Trafford, while creating a truly state-of-the-art stadium that transforms the fan experience only footsteps from our historic home."
Ratcliffe also said: "The north of England has won 10 Champions League medals, London has two. But London has Wembley, Twickenham, Wimbledon and the Olympic Village. The north of England deserves a stadium where England can play football, where we can hold the Champions League final, and one befitting of Manchester United's stature."
The design for the new stadium in Manchester is an a very early stage, consisting so far of some conceptual videos and images rather than detailed plans.
AC Milan and Inter Milan have confirmed they will redevelop the San Siro, which remains one of the most historic stadiums in the world and hosted the Champions League final as recently as 2016. The Milan stadium project is a long-running saga.
Previous plans for a 60,000-capacity stadium inspired by the city's Duomo called 'Cathedral' in 2019 was abandoned after the clubs failed to get the backing of the local authority and they have now had to look elsewhere for the redesign. Milan and Inter had announced plans to pursue separate stadium builds before coming back together last year in a joint redevelopment project on the site of the San Siro.

Fernandes critical of 'lazy' Manchester United in pre-season draw with Everton

Aug 4 (Reuters) - Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes let rip at his teammates following their 2-2 pre-season draw with fellow Premier League side Everton, saying their performance was "lazy" and calling for further reinforcements. A second-half goal from Mason Mount had United on course for victory in Atlanta, Georgia after Fernandes's opener was cancelled out by Iliman Ndiaye, but a bizarre 75th-minute own goal by Ayden Heaven gifted Everton the draw on Sunday. The draw put a slight damper on the Old Trafford club's tour of the United States, after promising victories over West Ham United and Bournemouth last month. "It's been important for developing how we want to play and getting the new players involved too," Fernandes told NBC Sports. "We didn't want to finish in this way. Our performance wasn't the best and we were a little bit lazy today. We want to avoid that because with laziness you can pay at any moment." United had their worst-ever Premier League campaign in the 2024-25 season, finishing 15th in the standings, and are looking to strengthen in the transfer window, signing Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo - both of whom started against Everton. "It's improving. But it's not the place it needs to be. I don't want to take a dig at anyone but the club is doing the best they can in terms of the financial situation they talk about," Fernandes said. "But it was crystal clear we needed more competition for the players that were here, more quality to get everyone to step up a little more to get to the XI, and I think that is what the club are trying to do. "Hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that." Asked about Fernandes's comments, manager Ruben Amorim told reporters: "I think I'm happy for the players to have that feeling. It's saying that they understand the situation. So, it's a good feeling. "I think the momentum of the tour was perfect. We had the weeks to work with a good environment, good feeling, and then we go back to Carrington (training ground) and we are near to start the season. "We are going with the feeling that we need to do a lot of things (better)." United begin the new Premier League season against Arsenal on August 17.

Former Chelsea and Arsenal cult hero announces shock move to Cypriot champions after leaving Brazilian side

The champions of Cyprus have announced the surprise signing of a Premier League cult hero. The 38-year-old is best remembered for his time at Chelsea but also went on to spend two seasons with their London rivals Arsenal. David Luiz spent nine seasons in the Premier League in total before leaving for his native Brazil in 2021. He spent the second half of last season with Fortaleza but became a free agent on August 1, leaving the club by mutual consent. And his next move has been confirmed just days later with Pafos confirming that he has joined them on a two-year deal. A club statement read: 'Pafos FC is proud to announce the signing of Brazilian football icon David Luiz, who joins the club on a contract until 2027. This landmark transfer marks the most historic moment in Cypriot football — the arrival of a global superstar whose name has echoed in the world's greatest stadiums. 'From the sacred pitches of Brazil to the brightest stages of Europe, David Luiz's career is a journey of passion, character, and excellence. 'David Luiz Moreira Marinho is a true titan of modern football. For over 15 years, he has competed at the pinnacle of the sport, earning admiration around the globe for his commanding presence, technical brilliance, and unmistakable charisma. Throughout his illustrious career, he has left a lasting legacy at every club he has represented. 'And now, he brings his unmatched experience, charisma, and warrior spirit to the land of myths, to write a new chapter with Pafos FC. Luiz re-joined boyhood club Flamengo in 2021 after his contract at Arsenal expired - and he went on to enjoy success in South America. He made 132 matches for the side in his second spell and helped them win the Copa Libertadores, the Copa do Brasil twice and the Campeonato Carioca. At club level, Luiz has a CV to envy with a host of trophy wins to boast - including the Champions League, the Europa League, the Premier League title and the FA Cup - plus a clean sweep of silverware in France. He made his name with Chelsea - signing from Benfica in 2010 - and going on to make 143 appearances, before joining PSG for two seasons.

Micah Richards urges Mikel Arteta to replace £50m Arsenal star

Micah Richards has given his verdict on marquee Arsenal signing Viktor Gyokeres and urged Mikel Arteta to replace Gabriel Martinelli. Arsenal have put their faith in Gyokeres to solve their goalscoring problems, signing the Sweden international from Sporting for £64m. Gyokeres enjoyed two sensational seasons at Sporting, scoring 97 goals in 104 appearances, and rejected Manchester United and his former manager Ruben Amorim in favour of a move to Arsenal. Richards believes Gyokeres will be a 'very good signing' for Arsenal, although he admits there are still some 'question marks' over the 27-year-old forward. Arsenal have turned their attentions to signing a new left-winger since completing a deal for Gyokeres and Richards supports that move, claiming Martinelli should now be viewed as an 'impact player' rather than a starter in Arteta's squad. The Gunners are interested in signing England forward Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace and Richards insists that would be an 'amazing' signing. The arrival of another forward and particularly a left-winger would increase the chances of Martinelli – and Leandro Trossard – of leaving after both players have been heavily linked with a summer move earlier on the window. Asked about Arsenal's transfer business on The Rest Is Football podcast, ex-England defender Richards said: 'How many times have we said Arsenal need a new striker? We said it every week last season. 'They've needed one for a while now. I still believe they need a left winger as well… they've been linked with Eze haven't they. 'I think Martinelli can definitely do a job but he's more of an impact player right now, great to have off the bench, so if they could get Eze that would be amazing. 'In terms of Gyokeres, I think it's a very good signing but I still think there are question marks if he can do it at this level consistently. 'I've watched loads of videos of him and I think he's really good with his movement, he's a really clever striker. 'I don't think people should expect him to hold the ball up really well because I saw some times when it came off him but he still scored two goals in the match so he got lots of praise. 'He will cause teams problems though and he's exactly what Arsenal needed, for sure.' More Trending Martinelli, who made 51 appearances for Arsenal last season, was linked with Bayern Munich earlier in the summer but the Bundesliga champions have since signed Luis Diaz from Liverpool. Arteta is reportedly keen for Martinelli to stay put despite the increased competition at the Emirates Stadium. If he is sold, Arsenal would want at least £50m for the Brazil international. While Martinelli could yet feature for Arsenal next season, Belgium star Trossard is 'increasingly likely' to leave. The £27m Arteta signing has emerged as a target for Borussia Dortmund and has also received 'concrete offers' from two unnamed Premier League clubs. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
