Malaysia-Indonesia pact sets stage for energy, labour protections, strategic halal and palm oil leadership
In a joint statement following the 13th Annual Consultation in Jakarta on Tuesday, both leaders welcomed the convening of the First Malaysia-Indonesia Investment Cooperation Working Group on September 2, 2024 in Indonesia, aimed at enhancing trade and investment ties.
'Both leaders noted new investment prospects in sectors such as infrastructure, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices, and pledged greater collaboration on food security and sustainability initiatives, including carbon trading,' stated the statement released by Malaysia's Foreign Ministry on Wednesday night.
Prabowo welcomed continued Malaysian investment in Indonesia's new Nusantara capital city (IKN), particularly in renewable energy and hydrogen development.
Both sides agreed to explore cross-border low-carbon energy trade between Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra, including a direct interconnection to enhance regional integration.
The leaders also urged the swift convening of the Fourth Meeting of the Joint Trade and Investment Committee this year and called for expedited efforts to normalise trade at the Tebedu-Entikong border.
On the halal industry, Indonesia and Malaysia are committed to facilitating market access and regulatory alignment and aiming to strengthen Asean's global halal competitiveness.
Acknowledging long-standing discussions since 2018, the leaders expressed hope that the MoU on counter-terrorism can be finalised and agreed to explore the technical aspects of transferring sentenced persons, pending relevant legal developments in Indonesia.
The leaders also reiterated commitments to protect Indonesian migrant workers and expand Indonesia's Community Learning Centres (CLCs) in Malaysia in line with international commitments to children's rights.
As co-founders of the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC), Malaysia and Indonesia reaffirmed cooperation on sustainable palm oil as well as counter negative global campaigns targeting the commodity, the statement said. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will restore and elevate pondok schools to ensure they remain a bulwark for the faith, morals, and character of the Muslim community, in line with modern demands, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said that this initiative involves cooperation between the Finance Ministry and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) to ensure that religious schools and pondok schools that are in poor condition can be developed with new facilities and technology. "We want to add new technology, including information technology, digitalisation, and artificial intelligence, so that this bulwark remains the strongest one to defend the faith, morals, and character of the Ummah," he said at the opening ceremony of the 65th International Al-Quran Recital and Memorisation Competition (MTHQA) at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (WTCKL) today. This year's 65th MTHQA, running from Aug 2 to 9, 2025, features the theme 'Developing a Madani Ummah' and brings together 71 participants from 49 countries. Malaysia is represented by four participants: Aiman Ridhwan Mohamad Ramlan from Perak and Wan Sofea Aini Wan Mohd Zahidi from Terengganu for the Recital category, while Muhammad Adib Ahmad Rozaini from Perak and Putri Auni Khadijah Mohd Hanif from Kelantan are in the Memorisation category. He said the strength and stability of Malaysia's government have earned the nation international recognition, leading to its selection as the coordinator for ceasefire negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia. 'The country remains peaceful because we have a strong government. Therefore, we must be cautious of any efforts aimed at weakening it. If the country were to fall into disarray, with constant conflict and political demands, who would come to us?' he said. Anwar made the remarks at the opening of the Mega 3D Carnival 2025 (MK3D 2025) at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) today. Elaborating further, he said the Defence Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia are expected to arrive in Kuala Lumpur on Monday (August 4) to engage in negotiations and finalise matters related to maintaining peace along their shared borders. Kuching to have longest riverfront and new landmark garden

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Kuching Waterfront is to be extended and will be Malaysia's longest river waterfront under a development plan by the Kuching North City Hall which includes a 16-hectare floral garden, inspired by Singapore's Gardens by the Bay. Kucing North mayor Hilmy Othman said the extended Kuching Waterfront will run from Sungai Bintangor to the Satok Bridge, the Borneo Post reported. The project is part of plans by the city hall (DBKU) to transform Kuching into a low-carbon, globally competitive capital city under Sarawak's development strategy. The 16-hectare floral garden, one of the headline projects, is to be developed near Jalan Astana. Hilmy said the floral garden would serve as a major public attraction and eco-tourism destination, drawing both tourists and plant lovers. Complementing this is the upcoming Bamboo Gallery, a 25-hectare green architecture and sustainability education centre near Jalan Crookshank. 'These projects aim to preserve the site's natural greenery and heritage,' Hilmy said. He said DBKU would continue investing in infrastructure that blends sustainability with public benefit. The city has already installed more than 2,000 smart streetlights to cut energy use and reduce maintenance costs, along with over 300 CCTVs to boost security. A smart parking system, set to replace the coupon model, is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025 and integrated into the iDBKU digital platform.
