Shuttlers not going to Aire-sur-la-Lys this time

KUALA LUMPUR: The national doubles squad will not go early to train at the Aire-sur-la-Lys centre in France for the Paris World Championships.
They will continue their final tune-up at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara instead.
Last year, the doubles shuttlers had a 10-day camp in the northern French town before the Paris Olympics.
National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky said the ABM is ideal for preparation this time before they depart for Paris on Aug 21.
"We have a bigger doubles squad this time, and it is better for us to remain here to finetune our preparations.
"We have many good men's doubles pairs at home to help our four pairs (for the world meet) have quality training and sparring sessions.
"The same goes for the women's doubles and mixed doubles, where we want to focus on the final touches."
Malaysia's men's pairs in Paris are Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, Wan Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani. The women's pairs are Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing and mixed doubles Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai and Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin.

Penang go down 3-0 to T'ganu in Super League opener

Penang and Terengganu players tussle for the ball during their Super League match. - Photo: Bernama PETALING JAYA: After three years, Penang opened their Super League campaign at the City Stadium in George Town, but it was not a night to remember for the Panthers. The side coached by Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail were toppled by Terengganu 3-0 in a wet affair, thanks to a slight drizzle, on Sunday (Aug 10). The first half was entertaining with the Turtles having the most attacks with French striker Yan Mabella and Brazilian winger Gabriel Silva proving to be livewires and causing problems for the Penang defence. Terengganu had about eight chances in the match but Penang's veteran goalkeeper Khairulazhan Khalid was calm and composed with a series of strong saves. However, there were questionable calls in terms of officiating as Terengganu could have had two penalties, while Penang one, but all the calls were waved away by referee Khairulsyahmi Ahmad Khalidi. The breakthrough came in the 49th minute when centreback Safwan Mazlan split the Penang backline with a superb pass to Azam Azmi Murad, who drove forward and drilled a low shot past Khairulazhan. Six minutes later, Mabella slid in a clever through ball for Silva, whose quick toe-poke slipped beyond Khairulazhan's reach to double Terengganu's lead. Penang's best chance came in the 73rd minute when Bosnian winger Danilo Sipovac curled a stunning right-footed effort from the edge of the box, only to be denied by an acrobatic save from Terengganu goalkeeper Suhaimi Hussin. The result handed Terengganu a confident start to their campaign, while Penang were left to reflect on missed opportunities and the challenge ahead. Substitute winger Khala'if Naskam scored his first goal of the campaign with his first touch, when he finished off a Baqiuddin Shamsuddin's through pass with a deft finish in the 88th minute. The result handed Terengganu a confident start to their campaign, while Penang were left to reflect on missed opportunities and the challenge ahead.

Main priority: Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik aim to focus on the World Tour Finals from Dec 17-21. — AFP PETALING JAYA: It's rare for the world No. 2 men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik to give up the chance to represent the country at the Thailand SEA Games. But they are prepared to pass the baton to Malaysia's next generation of players, confident in the depth of the men's doubles to deliver the gold at the biennial Games from Dec 9-20. They can then focus on the World Tour Finals from Dec 17-21, which clashes with the SEA Games. The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) are aiming to send their strongest squad to win the gold and Aaron believes they have several capable combinations who can deliver, even without him and Wooi Yik in the line-up. Apart from Aaron-Wooi Yik, Malaysia also have other strong pairs, including world No. 22 Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King and world No. 43 Choong Hon Jian-Mohd Haikal Nazri. World No. 7, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun may also have to be on standby for the World Tour Finals in Hangzhou in December as both pairs are currently in the best position to qualify. 'I'll be ready, but I'm handing that mission to players like Arif-Roy King or Haikal-Hon Jian, as I have already played in the SEA Games. 'This will be a good opportunity and stepping stone for them,' said Aaron, who won gold at the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines. Last December, BAM had announced their intention to send a strong team to the Thailand Games following a disappointing outing at the 2023 edition in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. On that occasion, BAM fielded a line-up of younger players. Not only did they return without a gold medal, missing their target of one gold, but the women's team also suffered a shock 0-3 defeat to the Philippines in the quarter-finals. Roy King and Hon Jian were both in action in Phnom Penh, but in the mixed doubles. Hon Jian partnered Yap Ling and reached the quarter-finals, while Roy King teamed up with Cheng Su Yin to make the final before settling for silver. Malaysia's overall haul from the Games was two silvers and four bronzes.

Still swinging strong as Mei Xing fights against time

PETALING JAYA: Women's doubles shuttler Teoh Mei Xing (pic) is the epitome of perseverance. After nearly 17 months together with Go Pei Kee, the world No. 18 pair are now just one step away from matching or even surpassing the highest world ranking of Mei Xing's career. She previously hit a career-high of world No. 17 with Anna Cheong, a partnership that delivered two titles – the Syed Modi International and the Czech Open in 2021 before it ended when Anna suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and later left the national team in September last year. Mei Xing had to start from scratch with Pei Kee, and she admits the climb this time has been far tougher than her earlier rise with Anna. 'I was fortunate as my ranking with Anna went up during the Covid-19 period when not many players were competing, so it was much easier compared to now,' said Mei Xing. 'But my current rise in the rankings came after the Paris Olympics, when there were scratch pairings, some players had stopped competing and others were just returning to the game. So it's not as easy as people might think, nor is it too difficult, but it is still challenging. 'I had to start all over again. Many people had told me to give up badminton, but I thought it over and decided to just do my job and give my best,' said Mei Xing. One of the challenges Mei Xing has faced is the perception that, at 28, she has been in the national team far too long. She silenced some of those critics last month with a strong showing at the Japan Open, ousting world No. 9 pair Kie Nakanishi-Rin Iwanaga of Japan to reach the quarter-finals. 'Some told me to stop because of my age. There were those who said I was old and questioned when I would leave the national team. 'There have been plenty of such voices, but I feel that as long as I can play, I want to keep going, especially since I don't have any serious injuries. 'More importantly, I know myself better because I'm the one stepping onto the court, not those voices,' added Mei Xing. Mei Xing-Pei Kee will join world No. 2 pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah at the World Championships in Paris later this month, and are eagerly awaiting the draw scheduled for next Wednesday.
