PETALING JAYA: After three years, Penang opened their Super League campaign at the City Stadium in George Town, but it was not a night to remember for the Panthers.
The side coached by Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail were toppled by Terengganu 3-0 in a wet affair, thanks to a slight drizzle, on Sunday (Aug 10).
The first half was entertaining with the Turtles having the most attacks with French striker Yan Mabella and Brazilian winger Gabriel Silva proving to be livewires and causing problems for the Penang defence.
Terengganu had about eight chances in the match but Penang's veteran goalkeeper Khairulazhan Khalid was calm and composed with a series of strong saves.
However, there were questionable calls in terms of officiating as Terengganu could have had two penalties, while Penang one, but all the calls were waved away by referee Khairulsyahmi Ahmad Khalidi.
The breakthrough came in the 49th minute when centreback Safwan Mazlan split the Penang backline with a superb pass to Azam Azmi Murad, who drove forward and drilled a low shot past Khairulazhan.
Six minutes later, Mabella slid in a clever through ball for Silva, whose quick toe-poke slipped beyond Khairulazhan's reach to double Terengganu's lead.
Penang's best chance came in the 73rd minute when Bosnian winger Danilo Sipovac curled a stunning right-footed effort from the edge of the box, only to be denied by an acrobatic save from Terengganu goalkeeper Suhaimi Hussin.
The result handed Terengganu a confident start to their campaign, while Penang were left to reflect on missed opportunities and the challenge ahead.
Substitute winger Khala'if Naskam scored his first goal of the campaign with his first touch, when he finished off a Baqiuddin Shamsuddin's through pass with a deft finish in the 88th minute.
The result handed Terengganu a confident start to their campaign, while Penang were left to reflect on missed opportunities and the challenge ahead.

PSG sign Ukrainian defender Illia Zabarnyi from Bournemouth

EUROPEAN champions Paris Saint-Germain said on Tuesday they have signed Ukrainian centre-back Illia Zabarnyi from Premier League club Bournemouth. British media reports said the deal was worth around £57 million ($76.7 million, 66 million euros). 'Paris Saint-Germain are excited to welcome Illia Zabarnyi,' PSG said in a statement, adding he would be the first Ukrainian ever to play for the club. The arrival of Zabarnyi, 22, could jeopardise the place of Brazilian stalwart Marquinhos in the starting lineup. Zabarnyi had an impressive 2024-2025 season in England when Bournemouth finished ninth and the club's supporters voted him their player of the season in the previous campaign. Bournemouth have now sold three of their first-choice defensive lineup from last season after Milos Kerkez moved to Premier League champions Liverpool and Dean Huijsen was transferred to Real Madrid. Qatar-owned PSG, who thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 to win the Champions League for the first time in May, also signed highly-rated Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier last Saturday, a move that appears to herald the possible departure of Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italian international 'keeper has not been included in the squad for Wednesday's European Super Cup final against Europa League winners Tottenham in Italy. The absence of the 26-year-old, who was outstanding in PSG's march to European glory, could ignite interest from the Premier League heavyweights. Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly both interested. - AFP

Donnarumma confirms PSG exit after Super Cup snub by Luis Enrique

GIANLUIGI DONNARUMMA has confirmed his imminent exit from Paris St Germain after being excluded from the squad by manager Luis Enrique. The Italian goalkeeper was left out of PSG's Super Cup line-up, signalling the end of his time at the club. Donnarumma played a key role in PSG's historic treble-winning campaign last season, including their first Champions League triumph. Despite his contributions, the 26-year-old has been deemed surplus to requirements under Luis Enrique's new plans. PSG's recent signing of French keeper Lucas Chevalier further hinted at Donnarumma's uncertain future. 'Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team's success,' Donnarumma wrote on social media. 'I am disappointed and disheartened.' Luis Enrique addressed the decision during his pre-match press conference ahead of PSG's clash with Tottenham Hotspur. 'These are always hard decisions to make. I can only say good things about Gianluigi Donnarumma,' the manager stated. 'He is one of the best players in his position, without any doubt. He is even better as a person, but we were looking for a different profile of keeper.' The PSG boss emphasised that the decision was made with the team's improvement in mind. Italian journalists pressed Luis Enrique for further details, but he quickly shut down further questions. 'No more questions on this. It is my decision, it is the club's decision and the club backs me,' he said firmly. Donnarumma expressed his desire to bid a proper farewell to PSG supporters if given the chance. 'I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done,' he wrote. PSG captain Marquinhos acknowledged the difficulty of the situation during his own press conference. 'It is always difficult. I have been here for 12 or 13 years and I have seen other players go through the same thing,' Marquinhos said. The Brazilian defender praised Donnarumma's contributions to the club's recent success. 'Because what he did last season was incredible and it is thanks to him that we reached the final and we won the trophy.'
