Iraqi court upholds reinstatement of Diyala council chief

Shafaq News13-04-2025
Shafaq News/ On Sunday, Iraq's Administrative Court rejected an appeal challenging a previous ruling that ordered the reinstatement of Omar Al-Karawi as head of the Diyala Provincial Council.
According to an official court document, the judges concluded that the appeal lacked sufficient legal grounds and upheld the original decision issued on March 25, 2025, which suspended the implementation of Administrative Order No. (67/3/23) pending a final ruling on the case.
Reacting to the ruling, MP Mudar Al-Karawi welcomed the court's decision, calling it 'a victory for justice, fairness, and the rule of law,' and urged everyone to 'respect the law' and comply with the binding court decision.
Earlier, the Diyala Provincial Council voted to dismiss its chairman after rejecting his responses during a formal questioning session, appointed Nizar Al-Lahibi as his successor, and swore him in before court proceedings began.

Iraq's cabinet greenlights Kurdistan salary payments

Shafaq News – Baghdad On Tuesday, Iraq's cabinet approved funding for public sector salaries in the Kurdistan Region, linking June payments to the transfer of revenues and oil deliveries mandated under the 2023-2025 Federal Budget Law. A statement from Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani's media office noted that the decision extends an earlier measure authorizing payroll funding for the Region. Committees overseeing the process are required to submit reports within a week, while a technical team calculates the federal treasury's share of the Region's non-oil revenues, ensuring accountability in the transfer process. Instead of transferring a fixed amount as in previous months, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) will now remit its share of non-oil revenues directly to the federal treasury. The Ministry of Finance and the Federal Board of Supreme Audit will monitor the process. The cabinet also instructed the KRG to ensure that oil companies operating in the Region deliver crude in line with the Federal Budget Law, ''reinforcing the link between revenue transfers and monthly allocations.'' Under this law, the KRG is required to provide both oil and non-oil revenues to the federal treasury in exchange for monthly payments. In practice, salary transfers

Lebanese politicians seek legal action against Hezbollah's Secretary-General

Shafaq News – Beirut A group of Lebanese lawmakers and political figures announced on Tuesday their intention to file a legal complaint against Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem, accusing him of inciting 'sectarian strife and threatening civil war.' The group, representing the "Sovereign Front" — a group of US and Saudi allied parties and politicians — stated in a joint declaration that Qassem's recent statements come at a 'critical moment in Lebanon's history,' as efforts are underway to curb the proliferation of illegal weapons allegedly backed by Iran. The statement warned that remaining silent in the face of what it described as 'the actions of Qassem and his armed organization' could endanger Lebanese citizens. Qassem, in his latest speech, accused the Lebanese government of 'carrying out the American-Israeli agenda to dismantle the resistance, even at the cost of civil war and internal strife.' He added that Hezbollah would not surrender its weapons 'as long as occupation and aggression persist,' placing full responsibility for any potential conflict on the government. 'We do not seek strife,' he said, 'but others are working toward it.'

US to complete withdrawal from Ain al-Assad base in September

Shafaq News – Baghdad The last American soldier will leave Ain al-Assad airbase in western Al-Anbar province on September 15, an Iraqi security source said on Tuesday. The source added that a small number of US personnel, including senior officers, will stay in Baghdad as part of joint forces when required. The withdrawal began on Monday with the departure of the first convoy from Ain al-Assad toward Syria. The column included trucks carrying military vehicles, according to another security source. Ain al-Assad is Iraq's second-largest airbase after Balad, serving as the headquarters of the US Army's 7th Division. It lies about 10 kilometers from the town of al-Baghdadi in Al-Anbar province. Earlier, a spokesperson for the US Embassy in Baghdad told Shafaq News that the coalition will shift from a military mission in Iraq to a more traditional bilateral security partnership, emphasizing that coalition activities would continue under civilian leadership at the global level. A government source told Shafaq News that Baghdad and coalition members, led by the United States, agreed on a timeline ending coalition operations in September 2025, leading to a full withdrawal in September 2026. By then, fewer than 500 troops will remain in Erbil, while others will move to Kuwait.
