Can Shah assure TN's seat share in Parliament remains 7.18%: DMK MPs
CHENNAI: DMK MPs Dayanidhi Maran and Thamizhachi Thangapandiyan on Sunday asked Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who was in Madurai, if he was ready to give a legal guarantee for the percentage of Tamil Nadu's representation in Parliament staying the same at 7.18.
In separate statements, both MPs said Tamil Nadu needs no deceptive assurance that the number of Lok Sabha seats for the state would not be reduced. The MPs said according to the Constitution, the delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies should take place on the basis of the first Census conducted after 2026.
But the BJP-led union government has deferred the Census to 2027 only with a view to reducing the number of Lok Sabha seats for Tamil Nadu, they alleged.

Two major road projects approved to decongest Delhi-NCR region
To decongest Delhi and the national capital region, the construction of two mega highways has been approved in a meeting recently held between Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, costing around Rs 10,000 crore. A new 17-kilometer-long highway connecting Urban Extension Road II (UER 2) to the Delhi-Dehradun expressway near Tronica City has been approved. After completion, this project will reduce traffic load on inner roads, easing pressure on National Highway-48, National Highway-44, Ring Roads and the Barapullah elevated corridor. The estimated construction cost of the project is Rs 3,300 crore. According to officials, connecting UER 2 to the Delhi-Dehradun, which starts near Akshardham temple, will provide faster connectivity to traffic generated from Haryana and Rajasthan, which is destined to move towards Dehradun. "Currently bids that have been received for hiring a consultant are under evaluation and the work to prepare a detailed project report is likely to be awarded by mid-June this year," according to a government document. Another project for the construction of a 65 km long highway from Tronica City connecting to the under-construction FaridabadNoidaGhaziabad Expressway, or FNG Expressway, has been approved. As per the plan, this highway will connect five major roadsDelhi-Dehradun Expressway, Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, DND-Faridabad Highway, and Yamuna Expresswayall together around NCR. "The highway will provide connectivity to NCR towns such as Loni, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Noida and Faridabad with North and Southwest Delhi. It will help in decongesting internal roads and city centres like the Sarai Kale Khan section and Kalindi Kunj, providing an alternative for intercity and freight traffic," the document said. A tender has been floated for hiring a consultant to prepare a DPR for this project, the estimated cost of construction is Rs 7,500 crore. "A total of 1.25 lakh crore work decongestion projects has been initiated by the centre in Delhi. The projects will be executed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at its own cost with the support of PWD," CM Gupta had said after the high-level meeting. The NHAI is also utilizing a large amount of inert waste recovered through biomining of legacy waste accumulated at Delhi's landfill sites. To date, approximately 10 lakh metric tons of inert material have been utilized in the construction of the UER 2 project.

Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), launched with aim of mitigating hardships faced by the poor and needy due to economic disruptions during Covid-19, has been providing free rations to 81 crore people since April 2020. PM Jan Dhan Yojana PM Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) was launched to provide universal access to banking facilities. Today, the country boasts a whopping 55.17 crore accounts, out of which 30.80 crore account holders are women. PM Vishwakarma Scheme Millions of artisans and craftsmen once faded into obscurity in a modernising economy but that became a thing of past under BJP government. Today, 2.37 million registered artisans and nearly 1 million beneficiaries are receiving toolkit incentives, traditional skills are being recognised, rewarded, and revived.

SC refuses urgent hearing on Tamil Nadu's plea against alleged freezing of education scheme funds by Centre over NEP row
ANI 09 Jun 2025, 14:44 GMT+10 New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday refused to list the Tamil Nadu government's plea against non-disbursal of education scheme funds under the Centre's Samagra Siksha Scheme for an urgent hearing. A bench of Justices PK Mishra and Manmohan stated that there was no urgency on the matter. Tamil Nadu recently approached the apex court seeking directions for the release of the education funds. In its plea, the state alleged that the Union government had frozen the disbursal of the said funds due to the state governments' refusal to implement the National Education Policy (NEP). In its plea, the Tamil Nadu government has sought the Court to declare that the National Education Policy, 2020, and the PM SHRI Schools Scheme are not binding on the state unless a formal agreement is entered into with the Union Government. The Tamil Nadu government further argued that its entitlement to funds under the Samagra Shiksha Scheme has been unlawfully made conditional on the implementation of these central schemes, which it considers to be unconstitutional, arbitrary, and illegal. 'The glaring reason for such non-disbursement is that the Defendant has linked the release of Samagra Shiksha Scheme funds with the implementation of 'National Education Policy' and 'NEP exemplary PM SHRI Schools' Scheme, despite the fact that these policies/schemes are separate schemes. That the reason of such apparent linkage is the fact that the MoU pertaining to the PM SHRI Schools Scheme dictates for implementation of the NEP-2020 in the Plaintiff State (Tamil Nadu) in its entirety which is not agreeable to the Plaintiff State due to the vociferous opposition to the Clause 4.13 of the NEP-2020 which envisages three-language formula', the plea read.
