Multiple locations across Kashmir linked to cross-border terror network raided

India Today3 days ago

The Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) unit of the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday carried out extensive searches at various locations across the valley, including Shopian, Kulgam, Budgam, Awantipora Pulwama, Kupwara and Srinagar. This comes amid intensified anti-terror operations across J&K following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed.According to officials, the raids are linked to a terror crime case currently under investigation by the CIK. During the probe, investigators identified multiple suspects allegedly using a specific encrypted messaging application reportedly used by terrorists and their handlers operating from across the border. These individuals are suspected to have maintained contact with suspicious cross-border entities.
advertisementThe searches come amid a sustained crackdown on terrorist elements in the region following the dastardly Baisaran Valley attack. Security agencies have been stepping up operations across South Kashmir in particular.
In one such operation earlier this month, two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists - identified as Irfan Bashir and Uzair Salam - were arrested in Shopian during a joint operation by the Army, J&K Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The two surrendered during the encounter, averting a potential encounter. Two AK-56 rifles, four magazines, two hand grenades and other ammunition were recovered from their possession.Just two weeks back, three LeT terrorists were killed in the Zinpather Keller area of Shopian during an encounter with security forces. The Army launched "Operation Keller" based on specific intelligence inputs provided by the Rashtriya Rifles. Among the slain terrorists were Shahid Kuttay and Adnan Shafi, both residents of Shopian.advertisementPrior to that, three Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists were killed in the Nadar area of Tral in Pulwama. The operation, which made headlines due to drone footage capturing the terrorists hiding, resulted in the deaths of Asif Ahmed Sheikh, Amir Nazir Wani and Yawar Ahmad Bhat - all residents of Pulwama district.Friday's searches by the CIK are ongoing, and more details are expected to come as the anti-terror operations continue in Jammu and Kashmir.Must Watch

77-year-old fraudster posing as Army Colonel nabbed by Delhi Police

New Delhi: A 77-year-old man who posed as a Colonel in the Indian Army to dupe people was traced to an old-age home in Punjab by Delhi Police 's Crime Branch. The accused, Sitaram Gupta alias Sitaram Singla, had been on the run for over a decade after jumping bail in a 2007 cheating case in Vivek Vihar. Gupta, a resident of Mansa, Punjab, allegedly took Rs 56,000 from a bank employee, offering a fake Army Welfare Housing Organisation flat and shop. "He handed over forged receipts. When the victim grew suspicious, a complaint was filed," a senior officer said. Declared a proclaimed offender, Gupta was found hiding in Patiala on May 31. "He changed his identity and appearance to avoid arrest," the officer said. Gupta told police he cut ties with his family and used knowledge of Army procedures to run frauds. He was earlier convicted in three fake Army job offer cases. Legal proceedings are underway.

Kharge slams Modi for using military ops in poll rhetoric

Bengaluru, Jun 1 (UNI) In remarks that could escalate political tensions, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of repeatedly politicising military operations and using national security for self-promotion during election campaigns, a charge that is expected to draw a sharp response from the BJP. Addressing reporters here, Kharge took direct aim at the Prime Minister's recent speeches invoking cross-border military action, warning that such rhetoric risks reducing the Army's work to a tool for electoral mobilisation. "I say this without any political bias – everyone must come together and focus on those who are threatening or intimidating our soldiers. But instead, we keep hearing: 'I did this, I achieved that, I alone can do this.' Issuing such self-congratulatory statements, especially about the armed forces, is not appropriate," Kharge said. He underscored that the nation owes its security to the sacrifices and professionalism of the Indian Army, not to any individual leader. "The entire country stands today because of our military. Whatever the Army does, it does for the nation, and we all support them," he noted. Referring to the Prime Minister's own past statements, Kharge said, "Modi himself had earlier declared that he would not interfere and had given full authority to the armed forces and their chiefs. If that is the case, then why does he keep referring to military action in his speeches? Why bring this up repeatedly in the middle of an election campaign?" Kharge warned that matters of national security should not be used for political mileage. "Using Army operations in election rhetoric for self-image or votes is simply not right. This is a matter of national dignity and security, not personal publicity," he added. While the Congress leader insisted he was speaking beyond party lines, political observers expect the BJP to strongly rebut the remarks. The party has in the past accused the Congress of undermining the morale of the armed forces whenever such comments surface. The BJP has often positioned PM Modi as a decisive leader on matters of defence and national security, particularly following the 2016 surgical strikes, the 2019 Balakot air strikes and Operation Sindoor after Pahalgam terror attack. Kharge's comments challenge that narrative head-on, questioning both the intent and tone of the Prime Minister's speeches. Political reactions from the BJP are awaited. UNI BDN SS

Russian Strike At Training Site Kills 12 Ukrainian Soldiers, Army Commander Resigns

Ukraine on Sunday said a Russian missile strike at an Army training area killed at least 12 soldiers and wounded dozens more, in a rare acknowledgement of its military losses. However, Kyiv did not disclose where the strikes took place. The Ukrainian Army had been under pressure to investigate glaring lapses in ensuring the safety of training soldiers. However, the army maintained that soldiers were not taking part in a 'mass gathering" and most were in their shelters during the attack.
