The 10 Best Horror Movies On Netflix By Rotten Tomatoes Score (July 2025)
It is genuinely hard to make lists like this on Netflix, given that so many movies come and go, given licensing timelines with the service. For this Best Horror Movies list, I figured I would list one of my favorites, but guess what? It's gone, as are a number of others I've seen in the past.
So, we work with what we have, and thankfully, we still have a number of great horror movies on the service, though I would argue less than we used to. Here they are, and there are at least a few Netflix originals on here that aren't going to leave.
His House
1) His House – 100% - I remember watching this when it was released in 2020, and it made a huge impression, as it did with the 125 critics that make up its perfect 100% score. It's a fantastic film about how the past can haunt you, based around a Sudanese couple who escaped the horrors of that land. But something followed them.
Creep 2
2) Creep 2 – 100% - Creep 2 might be cheating a little with far fewer reviews in, but it's one of the most unique entries on this list with an unsettling performance from Mark Duplass, who has created one of the most unexpected horror villains of our time between these movies and The Creep Tapes, a TV show.
Under the Shadow
3) Under the Shadow – 99% - I believe this is the only film on the list I haven't seen, so I'm certainly going to check it out now. A woman believes that her house is cursed after it's hit by a missile in the Iran-Iraq war, believing an evil spirit arrived with it to possess her daughter. What a concept.
Train to Busan
4) Train to Busan – 95% - Simply put, this is the best zombie movie of all time, and I would argue nothing else is even close. Harrowing, gory and memorable, the claustrophobic film will stay with you. Or I suppose it has stayed with me because I've watched it about five times.
Talk To Me
5) Talk to Me – 94% - One of the newest entries on this list, the teenage possession horror film is wholly unique in the genre and features some of the most memorable horror scenes and performances in the last decade. Those behind the film also just released Bring Her Back, which is still in theaters.
Cam
6) Cam – 93% - This is probably the most obscure English-language film and fair warning, this is one with a significantly lower audience score. But I still thought the film was neat, as a camgirl finds that a mysterious double has taken over her identity on the site.
Us
7) Us – 93% - Jordan Peele's horror stunner is on Netflix right now, even if his higher profile Get Out is not. Another film dealing with creepy doubles, it draws out an award-worthy performance from Lupita Nyong'o. I don't think it's Peele's best film, lower than Get Out and Nope, but it's fantastic in its own right.
Barbarian
8) Barbarian – 92% - Another recent, very horrifying film, this one from director Zach Cregger, who also has a new, bizarre looking horror film out this year, Weapons. Barbarian is a film that it's best to know little about going in, as it has the most jarring moment I've ever seen in a movie like this.
1922
9) 1922 – 92% - A murder drama that most may have missed, it stars Thomas Jane as a man who recruits his teenage son to help murder his mother for money. It's based on a Stephen King novella, so that's a great start right there.
Gerald's Game
10) Gerald's Game – 91% - At this point, Mike Flanagan is more famous for his 'Haunting of' Netflix shows, Midnight Mass and Hush than he is this film, but it's a locked-in-place thriller starring the excellent Carla Gugino, who is handcuffed to her bed after her husband dies of a heart attack, and must escape. Another Stephen King adaptation, in fact.
I know a few have probably slipped through the cracks here, as it is hard to keep track of shifting Netflix films month to month, but I did my best. Enjoy them. For now.

Meghan Markle's new challenge as she's accused of 'copying Kate Middleton'
Meghan Markle is said to be 'furious' about accusations she's 'copying' her sister-in-law, the Princess of Wales, following their new TV deal with Netflix. The Duke of Sussex, 40, and the Duchess of Sussex, 44, announced a new 'first-look' deal last week with the US streaming giant. As well as putting Meghan under fresh scrutiny, experts tell OK! that the details are clearly a 'reality check' for the couple. The deal includes a new festive edition of Meghan's With Love show, where viewers can 'join Meghan in Montecito for a magical holiday celebration'. It didn't take long for some royal watchers to accuse Meghan of trying to steal the festive limelight from Kate, 43, who hosts her own annual Christmas event. A source claims, 'Meghan is furious that people are accusing her of copying Kate, because Kate doesn't 'own' Christmas. There are always going to be comparisons, but Meghan has a business that she needs to make a success of." They continued, 'The Kate versus Meghan chatter started almost as soon as Meghan joined the family, and it's not going to stop, but Meghan doesn't want to compete or copy Kate.' Kinsey Schofield, a podcaster and royal expert in the US, believes, however, that the Sussexes have shown a 'pattern of choosing moments' that risk overshadowing other royal occasions – and Christmas might be no exception. 'It's become so noticeable it was reported recently that Harry had offered to share his schedule with the family as an 'olive branch' to avoid competing in the future,' she says. Earlier this year, Harry was accused of 'stealing the limelight' from his father and stepmother when he arrived at the Royal Courts of Justice in London just before King Charles and Queen Camilla began their state visit to Italy, which also coincided with their 20th wedding anniversary. The release of the paperback edition of his explosive memoir Spare also hit the headlines worldwide – just as the King and Queen were touring Australia. Back in 2020, Meghan's team came under fire after a stream of two-week-old photos were published on her Instagram account on the same day as Kate embarked on a UK tour. And when Harry and Meghan dropped their so-called 'Megxit' bombshell on the eve of Kate's 38th birthday, they were accused of 'overshadowing'. But when it comes to their festive plans, Kinsey suspects that Meghan is unlikely to successfully emulate Kate's feel-good celebration. The mum-of-three hosts an annual Christmas service at Westminster Abbey, an event which has become one of the biggest and most poignant in the family's festive calendar. Kinsey, who hosts the To Di For Daily podcast, doubts that Meghan's show will hit the same notes, saying, 'Catherine's carol concert is about unity, love, and hope. Kinsey adds. 'She arrives with her family, with a sense of togetherness and faith. 'In contrast, Meghan's Christmas special feels more like a branding opportunity. She's timed product launches from her lifestyle line, As Ever, to coincide with the release. 'Without the warmth of family or shared tradition, it plays less as a holiday celebration and more as a commercial venture. When placed side by side, Catherine's feels authentic and meaningful, while Meghan's risks seeming transactional.' The Sussexes' latest TV news comes five years after they signed a deal with Netflix said to be worth upwards of $100m (£74m), shortly after turning their backs on their life as senior working royals. Their new arrangement – described as a 'multi-year, first-look deal' – means Netflix will pay for the right to get first dibs on the couple's work, but isn't committed to taking it. Dermot McNamara, a talent manager and PR crisis expert, believes the difference in terms sends out a strong message. 'It's not necessarily a humiliation, but it is a reality check for Meghan and Harry and also a reflection of the ever-changing entertainment world,' he tells us. 'Every network and streamers' belts are tightening. 'Netflix wants to see sharper ideas and stronger delivery before committing to mega-budgets again. The upside is that this could help Meghan and Harry define what they actually stand for, creatively.' The pair's productions so far, including Harry's polo documentary and Meghan's With Love series, weren't exactly record-breaking successes, with the latter failing to crack Netflix's list of the 300 most-streamed shows of the year so far. Dermot also suggests that while Meghan won't take kindly to the 'copying' comments, she will have been fully aware that comparisons would inevitably be made. 'Every broadcaster, charity and celebrity under the sun produces holiday specials. It's a warm, family-friendly format that audiences respond to. That said, Meghan knows the optics. Wanting to be seen in the same aspirational light as Kate isn't the worst strategy, but Meghan's challenge is to make it feel authentic to her own brand, not a re-skin of someone else's.' 8 top new movies to stream this week on Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu and more (Aug. 19-25)
It's set to be a huge week for new movies across the best streaming services, with Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu and more offering subscribers new flicks to enjoy. Meanwhile, on premium video-on-demand platforms, two of the biggest movies of the summer, 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning' and 'F1: The Movie,' make the move from the big screen to at-home streaming. It's also a jam-packed week for family-friendly animated movies, with not one, not two, but three new options, including Pixar's latest original effort, 'Elio,' which sees a young boy rub shoulders with a colorful crew of aliens, and also fan-favorite sequel 'The Bad Guys 2.' If you're looking for something new to watch this week, I've picked out the biggest newcomers across streaming services. And be sure to check out the top new TV shows this week if you're in the mood for some binge-watching. After a surprisingly lengthy theatrical run, by modern standards at least, 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning' makes its streaming bow this week, and the action blockbuster is sure to be just as thrilling watched from the comfort of your own home as it was in the cinema. Unfortunately, 'The Final Reckoning' has to pay for the narrative sins of its somewhat messy predecessor, but it offers some of the franchise's best set-piece moments, which is quite a feat considering the pedigree of the 'Mission: Impossible' series. Following on from 'Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning' (fun fact: this movie was originally entitled 'Dead Reckoning - Part 2"), superspy Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is still racing against time to shut down a rogue AI known as the Entity. Assembling his IMF squad, including Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg, 'The Final Reckoning' offers a global-trotting action romp. If it's truly the final 'Mission: Impossible' movie, it's a largely fitting conclusion for the iconic action series. Buy on Amazon from August 19 Pixar's 'Elio' was a box-office disappointment for Disney's crown jewel animation studio, but the House of Mouse will be hoping it can find a second life over on streaming. However, I suspect that many viewers will be patiently waiting for its Disney Plus drop in a few weeks, but if you're eager to join Elio on his intergalactic adventures right now, you can watch on premium streaming platforms starting this week. The movie centers on the eponymous Elio, a bright-eyed young boy with big dreams of going to space. He doesn't have to wait until he's older to fulfill this wish to explore the stars, either. One day, while at summer camp, he's unexpectedly beamed up by aliens and taken to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization for all the beings of the galaxy to share their knowledge. The wrinkle is that his new alien pals believe he's an ambassador for Earth and desperately need his help. Buy or rent on Amazon from August 19 If you're looking for a family-friendly movie with a little more attitude, 'The Bad Guys 2' could be the perfect pick for you and your little ones. It focuses on a group of reformed villains, led by the wily Mr. Wolf (Sam Rockwell), and is a colorful heist caper starring a very motley crew. "The Bad Guys 2" has proved to be not only a hit with critics over the summer (scoring a very strong 87% on Rotten Tomatoes) but it's also gone down a treat with viewers, holding an even more impressive 95% audience score on RT. 'The Bad Guys 2' sees the entire crew return, including Mr. Wolf, Mr. Snake (Marc Maron), Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos), Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson) and Ms. Tarantula (Awkwafina). These former crooks are trying to be good and live honest lives, but they're drawn back into the criminal world to help with a high-stakes heist by a new team, The Bad Girls. Buy or rent on Amazon from August 19 I did a double-take when poring over the streaming release schedule when I saw 'The Map That Leads to You' because the name is very similar to another teen romance drama, 'The Map of Tiny Perfect Things,' which landed on Prime Video back in 2021. Unfortunately, this new streaming movie lacks the time-travel twist of Prime's previous map-themed original, and instead looks like a pretty bog-standard drama about doe-eyed young lovers and their complicated affair. Heather (Madelyn Cline) is heading off on a European adventure after her graduation. With her two best friends (Sofia Wylie and Madison Thompson) in tow, it's set to be a dream summer before Heather returns to her 'real' life, which has been perfectly planned out. Of course, life doesn't always follow a script, and when she meets Jack (KJ Apa), she starts to reconsider her future and the path laid out before her. Watch on Prime Video from August 20 Samara Weaving leading a heist-thriller movie, sign me up! That's the quick elevator pitch for 'Eenie Meanie,' and it's quite a compelling one. It's a good thing the core premise has plenty of potential, because the name is hardly going to attract many viewers on its own. Seriously, at first, I assumed this was some form of educational movie for pre-schoolers. Rather, it's the feature film debut of writer/director Shawn Simmons, and sees Weaving play Edie (nicknamed Eenie Meanie), a getaway driver, who's dragged into a dangerous job by a former employer, with the life of her unreliable and troubled ex-boyfriend (Karl Glusman) at stake. Taking clear cues from 'Baby Driver,' this high-speed thriller looks like it could be a bit of a sleeper hit. Watch on Hulu from August 22 Cynics could accuse 'F1: The Movie' of being little more than a 155-minute commercial for the popular motorsport competition. I'll acknowledge the level of product placement is high, this sports drama from 'Top Gun Maverick' director Joseph Kosinski is a breakneck ride with some of the best vehicular sequences captured on film since … well, since 'Top Gun Maverick. Brad Pitt plays Sonny Hayes, a wandering driver, who is recruited to a struggling Formula 1 team desperate for an experienced motorist to work with their hotshot rookie, Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris). Battling his personal demons and friction within the team, Sonny needs all his expertise behind the wheel to come out on top. Outside of the car, 'F1: The Movie' follows the standard sports movie formula very closely, but the conventional narrative beats melt into the background when the characters get behind the wheel and Kosinski gets to show this masterful ability to construct high-speed racing drama. Buy or rent on Amazon from August 22 As noted, it's a big week for animated family movies, and Peacock subscribers can look forward to streaming 'Night of the Zoopocalypse' over the weekend. There looks to be a direct-to-DVD quality about this one, with fairly generic animation and a predictable story focused on a group of anthropomorphic animals living in a zoo, but it should at least provide suitable entertainment for young viewers. In 'Night of the Zoopocalypse,' a meteor crashes into Colepepper Zoo, which sees several of the animals transform into slobbering mutants, and to save the day, and restore the zoo to its usual harmony, Gracie (Gabbi Kosmidis), a young wolf, must team up with Dan (David Harbour), a gruff mountain lion. It's a little out of season, with Halloween more than two months away, but 'Night of the Zoopocaylpse' should serve as a solid summer time filler. Watch on Peacock from August 22 'On Swift Horses' is a romantic drama that sells itself on its impressive cast list of rising stars, including Daisy Edgar-Jones, Jacob Elordi, Will Poulter, Diego Calva and Sasha Celle. It received mixed reviews during its limited theatrical run in the spring. But I expect it'll enjoy a fresh wave of interest now that it's heading to the world's biggest streaming service. Muriel (Edgar-Jones) and Lee (Poulter) are a married couple moving to California after the latter returns home from the Korean War. But their attempt to find peace and stability is rocked when Lee's younger brother, Julius (Elordi), shows up and upends their plans. What follows is a knotty tale of love, drama and unexpected passion. Some critics accused the movie of being a little emotionally messy, but the cast's performances received plenty of praise, especially Elordi's. Watch on Netflix from August 23
