‘I forgot' is not an excuse

Not going anywhere: Hanif checking one of the luxury cars that was seized by the department at the JPJ depot in Seremban.
SEREMBAN: The common excuse 'saya lupa' (I forgot) will not save you if you're caught driving without a valid road tax and insurance.
Negri Sembilan Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Hanif Yusabra Yusuf said officers would seize such vehicles immediately and store them at the department's depot until the owner is brought to court and settles all dues.
'This is a serious offence. In the first seven months of this year, we issued 10,435 summonses to vehicle owners, including motorcyclists, in the state for not having valid road tax.
'Another 7,812 summonses were issued to those without insurance cover, and this is unacceptable,' he told reporters at the state JPJ office yesterday.
Hanif said what was more shocking was that owners of luxury vehicles costing hundreds of thousands of ringgit were also among those who failed to renew their road tax and insurance.
Ten high-end vehicles, including a Porsche Taycan, an Audi, a Tesla, a Mini Countryman and a Toyota Alphard, were seized this year when owners could not produce the necessary documents, he said.
'Some hadn't paid for over two years.
'When we ask why, they just say 'lupa lah' (I forgot). That is a lame excuse we will not accept,' he added.
Hanif said offenders could be charged under Section 23(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for not having a valid road tax and under Section 90(1) for not having insurance coverage.
He reminded vehicle owners to act responsibly and not take the matter lightly.
'Imagine getting into an accident without a valid road tax or insurance. Not only will you face legal consequences, but the other party may have difficulty claiming compensation,' he said.
Hanif said such cases had been reported in the past and had caused serious problems for all parties involved.
He said JPJ would continue enforcement operations to ensure compliance at all times.

‘SIS' vehicle plate auction in Selangor starts Aug 15 for charity

SHAH ALAM: The special 'SIS' vehicle registration series, honouring Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, will be auctioned from Aug 15 to Aug 19. The Selangor Royal Office announced the auction via Facebook, linking it to the Sultan's 80th birthday in December and his Silver Jubilee in 2026. The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will manage online bidding through the JPJeBid system, with results released on Aug 20. Bidders must adhere to JPJ's terms and minimum prices, with the department overseeing the process without third-party involvement. A portion of the proceeds will benefit a royal foundation supporting scholarships and emergency aid under the Sultan's patronage. Tan Sri Muhammad Ibrahim, former Bank Negara governor and Selangor Royal Council member, will chair the foundation to ensure transparency. JPJ reminded successful bidders to assign the registration number to a vehicle within 12 months of receiving the official results letter. - Bernama

JPJ: ‘SIS' number plates up for auction Aug 15 to mark Selangor Sultan's Silver Jubilee

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) today said it will open online bidding from August 15 for a special 'SIS' vehicle registration plate series. It will be held in conjunction with the Silver Jubilee of Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah's reign in 2026. 'The bidding process is subject to the existing terms and conditions set under the JPJeBid System. 'Any successfully bid registration number must be registered to a vehicle within twelve months from the date of the official bidding results letter,' the department said in a statement. JPJ said the 'SIS' index stands for 'Sultan Idris Shah' and honours the ninth Sultan of Selangor, marking the celebration of His Royal Highness' 25 years on the throne next year. The department said the bidding will be conducted via its JPJeBid system and will run from August 15 until 10pm on August 19, with results to be announced on the next day. JPJ added that the online auction is open to all members of the public, in line with JPJ's aim of providing a transparent and accessible platform for the purchase of special registration numbers. 'All are welcome to participate through JPJeBid as a medium to obtain their preferred registration number from the SIS series,' the department said.
