Rusk man sentenced to life in prison after robbing, killing elderly man in 2022
CHEROKEE COUNTY, Texas (KETK) — A Rusk man was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Friday after robbing and killing a 70-year-old man in 2022.
According to the Cherokee County District Attorney's Office, on April 22, 2022, Christopher Anthony Peoples of Rusk robbed and attacked Valentine Ortega Sanchez of Rusk with a knife, leaving him dead in his driveway near Martin Luther King Boulevard and Dixon Avenue.

Officials said around 1 a.m. on April 23, 2022, Peoples fled from deputies in a vehicle while disposing of evidence south of Rusk on FM 241 and then wrecked in the 3000 block of FM 241.
Deputies removed Peoples from the vehicle and began life-saving measures before EMS arrived and took him to a local hospital by helicopter where he was then arrested for evading arrest in a vehicle.
While in police custody on April 24, 2022, Peoples 'confessed to committing the act of murder at a residence on Dixon Avenue in Rusk,' according to a release from the sheriff's office. On April 28, 2022, a warrant for capital murder was issued.
The DA's office said they presented four days of testimony, DNA evidence and video footage. 'While fleeing police, Peoples attempted to dispose of evidence that proved his guilt,' the DA's office said.
The jury deliberated for less than an hour before finding Peoples guilty of capital murder, sentencing him to life in prison without possibility of parole.

'The efforts of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and Rusk Police Department ensured that Justice was done on this case,' Cherokee County District Attorney Jonathan Richey said.

Man still on the run, woman detained after overnight high speed chase in Tyler
TYLER, Texas (KETK)– A man is still on the run and a woman was detained after a high speed police chase early Tuesday morning in Tyler, officials said. According to the Smith County Sheriff's Office, a deputy was trying to make a traffic stop on a car near Loop 323 and Texas College Road early Tuesday morning when the driver drove off reaching speeds of 100 mph. The man slowed down the car in front of the Rose Valley Apartments and jumped out of the drivers side and ran through the complex but was not found, officials said. The sheriff's office said she jumped out of the car and was detained but suffered from abrasions, scrapes and broken teeth. LIST: East Texas cold homicide cases Texas Rangers are still trying to solve KETK news has compiled a list of people wanted for several different crimes causing them to be added to the Texas 10 Most Wanted Fugitive List: Race: White (Hispanic) Age: 51 Height: Five feet and five inches Weight: 150 Alias: Tomas Garza, Jorge Alberto Gomez, Miguell Angel Gomez and Mike Gomez Features: Tattoos on neck, both hands, left leg and left arm. Scars on face, lip and left forearm. Last known location: Houston Gomez is wanted for murder and a parole violation of sexual assault of a child. He is a convicted sex offender and is required to register annually. According to Texas DPS, Gomez has ties to Harris County including Houston.' According to Houston Police Department, on Dec. 8, 2022 around 6:10 p.m. Gomez fatally shot a man at 8695 Mesa Drive. After officers responded they found an unresponsive man in the parking lot who had multiple gunshot wounds and Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced him dead. Officials said after their preliminary investigation they found out the victim and Gomez had an altercation outside of a business, which led to the shooting. Officials said in 1994 Gomez was sentenced to 10 years in prison for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and burglary of a vehicle and sentenced 7 years for burglary of a building. In 2009, he was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old teen. 'In 2022, a warrant was issued out of Harris County for Gomez's arrest for Murder,' Texas DPS said. 'Additionally, on December 13, 2022, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles issued a warrant for his arrest for Parole Violation (Original Offense: Sexual Assault of a Child).' Race: White (Hispanic) Age: 53 Height: Five feet and eight inches Weight: 190 Features: Tattoos on chest and both arms Last known location: McAllen Herrera is wanted for aggravated sexual assault, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, assault causing bodily injury, felon in possession of a firearm, possession of cocaine, evading arrest or detention with a vehicle, money laundering, violation of bond or protective order and possession of marijuana. 'Herrera is affiliated with the Tango Vallucos gang and has also been affiliated in the past with the Texas Syndicate gang,' Texas DPS said. In 1990, officials said Herrera was sentenced to 10 years in prison for aggravated assault. In 2016, Nathan was sentenced to one year in prison for battery and bail jumping in Georgia. Nathan is wanted for a murder that happened on Sept. 25, 2022. According to the Houston Police Department, Nathan and the victim were at a food truck on 9598 Main Street about 2:20 a.m. when they got into an argument that escalated when the suspect shot the victim multiple times. Officials said Nathan fled the scene and the victim was transported to a local hospital where they later died on September 29. 'In Oct. 4, 2022, Nathan was arrested by Houston Police Department for murder and evading arrest/detention with a vehicle, officials said. 'The following day Nathan was released on bond. 'In October 2013, Carson was hired by a home builder in Kyle, Texas, to work as a sign spinner to advertise the properties,' Texas DPS said. 'He is accused of coming into the model home and threatening a representative of the builder with a box cutter and then stealing his property. The victim was also severely beaten.' 2023 fatal shooting suspect in custody after running from East Texas authorities for almost a month Officials said on Sept. 11, 2014 the Hays County Sheriff's Office issued a warrant for aggravated robbery. Carson was last known to be in Austin and believed to be homeless. Race: Black Age: 53 Height: Five feet and 10 inches Weight: 175 Features: Tattoos on both arms, both legs and right hand. Scars on back and stomach. Last known location: Houston Bradley is wanted for aggravated robbery and has ties to Harris County including Houston. In 1999, he was convicted of two counts of manufacture/ deliver a controlled substance and was sentenced to 160 days confinement for each offense to be served concurrently. In 2010, Bradley was sentenced to six months confinement for driving while intoxicated with a child under 15 years of age. On Nov. 21, 2024 a warrant was issued out of Matagorda County for his arrest for aggravated robbery. Race: White (Hispanic) Age: 44 Height: Five feet and 10 inches Weight: 250 Features: Tattoos on stomach, back, right hand and both arms Last known location: Houston Ayala Morales who has ties to Houston is a convicted sex offender that is required to register every three months. In 2000, Ayala Morales sentenced to six months of confinement for burglary of a building. In 2018, he was sentenced to 7 years in prison after evading arrest/detention with a vehicle. 'Additionally, in 2018 Ayala Morales was convicted of three counts of Indecency with a child by sexual contact following incidents with two 14-year-old girls and one 12-year-old girl,' Texas DPS said. 'Ayala Morales was also convicted in 2018 of indecency with a child by exposure following an incident with an 8-year-old girl. He was subsequently sentenced to 7 years confinement for each offense to be served concurrently. ' He was released from prison in 2024 but on February 10 a warrant was issued out of Harris County for his arrest for attempted indecency with a child sexual contact. Race: White Age: 39 Height: Five feet and 11 inches Weight: 140 Last known location: Mabank Vess has been wanted since 2014 for sexual assault of a child and possession of child pornography with ties to Rockwall County and Mabank. Texas DPS said in August 2014 Vess was arrested in Rockwall County for sexual assault of a child but bonded out. Later that year, he failed to appear in court and on Nov. 13, 2014 warrants were issued out of Rockwall County for sexual assault of a child and possession of child Perez Reyes was captured on May 5 in Palmview and was wanted for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, sexual assault and assault family/household member impede breath/circulation. Trevor Rhea McEuen was captured on June 2 in Grand Saline and was wanted for capital murder by terror threat, murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and arson of a habitation. Woodstock man gets 50 year sentence for family violence conviction
The Cherokee County District Attorney's Office announced that a man was facing a 50 year sentence after negotiating a plea in a family violence case. District Attorney Susan K. Treadaway said that David Ray Graham, 38 of Woodstock, entered a negotiated plea to multiple charges on Thursday, taking a guilty plea for multiple charges related to a domestic violence assault. According to the DA's office, Graham faced eight charges stemming from a sheriff's office investigation in March 2024. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The DA's office said Cherokee County Sheriff's Office deputies went to Northside Cherokee Hospital after getting a report that a woman had been assaulted in a Woodstock home. While being treated for what the DA's office said were visible injuries, the victim told deputies that Graham had repeatedly punched and kicked her, threatened her with a machete and hammer and held her against her will in the home. 'This was not an isolated incident. David Graham had abused this woman before, and this time he could have killed her. Even after his arrest, he continued the cycle of abuse by calling from jail to threaten her and pressure her to recant. This sentence holds him accountable and brings justice for the fear and harm he inflicted.' Graham was charged with: 2 counts family violence aggravated assault False imprisonment 3 counts family violence battery Influencing a witness Terroristic threats The DA's office said Graham was sentenced to 50 years, with 20 in prison and the remaining 30 on probation. Graham's probation has special conditions, including no contact of any kind with the victim, he must participate in a family violence intervention program, be evaluated and treated for mental health and substance abuse and must forfeit all of his weapons. 'Domestic violence threatens the safety of all citizens and has no place in our community. For this reason, we remain steadfast in our commitment to pursuing justice for all who are affected,' Treadaway said. 'We commend the Cherokee Sheriff's Office and the staff at Northside Cherokee Hospital for their compassionate response to protect and support the woman assaulted by this defendant.'
