Odisha govt asks collectors to complete rural drinking water projects
BHUBANESWAR: The state government on Friday asked all district collectors to ensure that rural households in their jurisdiction have access to safe drinking water.
Chief secretary Manoj Ahuja reviewed the progress of rural drinking water projects at a high-level meeting on Friday and directed all collectors to make field visits along with other district level officers to make sure they are completed in time.
The chief secretary said that problems for execution of drinking water projects like electricity connection and clearances from different departments should be solved by regular meetings of the collectors with officials of the Panchayati Raj and Rural Development departments.
The chief secretary was informed that the state government has sanctioned 18,677 single village piped water supply schemes (SVPWSS), out of which 12,289 in different stages of completion. The government aims to complete 238 SVPWSS by June 2025 and 752 by December 2025.
Similarly, 16 mega drinking water supply schemes are nearing completion, while 191 are still under construction. These projects are expected to be completed by March 2027. Besides, 4,855 solar based drinking water schemes have been sanctioned, with 3,652 under implementation.
Ahuja said that the target of the state government is to provide piped water supply to 3,652 villages through solar-powered schemes by September 2025. The chief secretary also asked the officials of both departments to review implementation of the drinking water schemes in various districts regularly.

1 crore saplings to be planted in Varanasi division under mega drive this year
1 2 Varanasi: The four districts under Varanasi division—Varanasi, Ghazipur, Chandauli, and Jaunpur— are all set to plant 1.64 crore saplings during the statewide mega plantation drive commencing in Tuesday, a review of the upcoming plantation drive was conducted at the forest department headquarters in Varanasi division. Conservator of Forests, Varanasi Circle, Ravi Singh chaired the meeting, attended by district forest officers, deputy divisional forest officers, and regional forest officers from all districts, including Varanasi, Ghazipur, Chandauli, and said that the chief secretary has set the plantation targets, allocating 280,000 saplings for Varanasi, 1,050,000 for Ghazipur, 1,455,400 for Jaunpur, and 3,640,600 for Chandauli. In response, site selection and pit digging were completed at 86 sites in Varanasi, 175 in Ghazipur, and 178 in Jaunpur. Additionally, 26 other departments were assigned plantation targets of 1,417,520 saplings in Varanasi, 3,064,100 in Ghazipur, and 3,742,580 in Jaunpur. Work plans for planting 514,567 saplings in Varanasi, 2,402,476 in Ghazipur, and 3,007,456 in Jaunpur were prepared by these departments and sent to the district forest officers. He said that the rural development department was given the largest target of 4,762,000 saplings, focusing on planting shade and fruit trees on vacant lands like ponds and pastures. The Panchayati Raj department has a target of 482,000 saplings, and the agriculture department has 952,000. They will distribute teak, rosewood, mango, mahua, neem, and drumstick saplings to beneficiary farmers and producer groups for free. The forest department is preparing to supply these saplings to the Panchayati Raj and agriculture departments free of to him, the urban development, housing development, public works, and defence departments were assigned targets of 128,000, 13,000, 28,000, and 11,000 saplings, respectively, to plant shade and ornamental trees in urban areas, parks, and vacant spaces. The animal husbandry department has a target of 19,000 saplings, focusing on planting shade and fodder species in cow shelters. The education departments (secondary, basic, technical, and higher education) were allocated targets of 29,000, 48,000, 13,000, and 49,000 saplings, respectively, for planting shade and fruit trees in schools and colleges to strengthen the mid-day meal horticulture department plans to plant 587,000 fruit saplings, emphasizing the famous Langra mango of Varanasi. They will provide free grafted fruit saplings to all departments in July. A team was formed to inspect prepared sites and pits, and their report was submitted. The Conservator of Forests instructed all district forest officers to ensure full participation from all 27 departments and engage farmers and producer groups in the upcoming plantation campaign. Geo-tagging of all plantation sites through the Haritima app was directed, and training programmes for all departments on using the app are expected to be organised.

IAF demonstrates aerial prowess on Ganga e-way airstrip
LUCKNOW: The Indian Air Force on Friday conducted a "land and go" exercise along a 3.5-km section of the Ganga Expressway in Shahjahanpur, marking a significant milestone in the country's defence preparedness. Previous emergency landing exercises on the Lucknow-Agra and Purvanchal expressways were restricted to daytime operations. The exercise attracted numerous locals who gathered to observe the demonstrations. The trials featured aircraft like Rafale, SU-30 MKI, Mirage-2000, MiG-29, Jaguar, C-130J Super Hercules, AN-32 and the MI-17 V5 helicopter. The comprehensive exercise assessed low-altitude passes, landings and take-offs in both day and night conditions. State officials noted that the successful drill demonstrates the expressway's capability as an alternative runway during emergencies, enhancing the IAF's operational capabilities. The expressway had been equipped with over 250 CCTV cameras to ensure foolproof security and surveillance. Top defence and state officials were also present to oversee the proceedings. The Ganga Expressway will be Uttar Pradesh's fourth expressway with an emergency airstrip after the Agra-Lucknow Expressway (Unnao), Purvanchal Expressway (Sultanpur), and Bundelkhand Expressway (near Etawah), distinguished by its night landing capabilities . Shahjahanpur SP Rajesh Dwivedi said: "The airstrip, located near Piru village in the Jalalabad region, witnessed IAF drill. Around 40 km of the surrounding area was sanitised with the help of personnel from the Panchayati Raj and Animal Husbandry departments, along with local police teams. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had inspected the airstrip the previous Sunday. In Sep 2021, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet approved the 594-km Ganga Expressway project between Meerut and Prayagraj. The initial civil and construction cost estimate was Rs 36,230 crore. The public-private partnership project is currently experiencing delays.
