Lakeview claims first district title in nearly a decade
ALLIANCE, Ohio (WKBN) – Lakeview softball downed Marlington 5-1 to claim the Bulldogs' first district title since 2016 in the Division IV District Championship game in Alliance on Saturday afternoon.

Lakeview's bats were hot early and scored all five runs in the first two innings.
Bulldogs' Mackenzie Stowe, Hallie Capan and Linnea Kovac drove in one run each in the win.
Lakeview's pitcher Isabella Isenberg earned the win with five strikeouts and gave up four hits in seven innings.
Marlington's Justine Doringo drove in the lone run for the Dukes in the loss. Doringo also gave up six hits and five runs, with one strikeout in the loss.
Marlington ends the season with an overall record of 16-6. Lakeview moves on to 20-4.
The Bulldogs advance to the Division IV Regional Semifinals next week.

CORTLAND, Ohio (WKBN) – Lakeview softball has already achieved one of the most successful seasons in school history, with a potential championship in sight. 'Really, the big thing I'm focused on is to try to ignore all the extra stuff,' said Lakeview head coach David Kelm. 'We're still playing softball. It's just softball. We're going to just go play softball. So, however it bounces, however it goes.' The Bulldogs punched their ticket to the final four in late May with a 5-1 win against Perry in the Division IV Regional Final. 'I think it's always good to have people doubt you,' said Lakeview junior catcher Mackenzie Stow. 'It creates a flame, a fire. We have nothing to lose; everyone else does. We're just creating a new name, creating history.' Lakeview also claimed the school's first district title since 2016 in the Division IV District Championship game this season. 'We try not to think about it too much,' said senior pitcher Ava Bacon. 'It's just another game, I know it's a state semifinal, but we can't let it get to our heads too much.' Lakeview currently has an overall season record of 22-4. 'All the hard work is paying off, but we know it's not done yet,' said junior pitcher Isabella Isenberg. 'I think going into tomorrow, we know we're not done. We're ready to keep playing.' Gonzaga forward Ben Gregg wants to showcase shooting in draft workouts Ben Gregg had a down year shooting last season, and the former Gonzaga forward has made that a point of emphasis in workouts ahead of the 2025 NBA draft. Gregg averaged 9.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 35 games as a fifth-year senior with the Bulldogs. He ranked 10th in the country in 2-point field-goal percentage (72.9) and ninth in the West Coast Conference in offensive rebounds (67). The 6-foot-10 standout shot 27.1% from 3-point range on two attempts per game this past season after converting 37.7% from beyond the arc over the previous two seasons. He wants to show teams that he can be a consistent floor spacer at the next level. "I think my numbers, I struggled last year," Gregg said Tuesday after working out with the Portland Trail Blazers. "My 3-point numbers were a little down last year, so I just want to prove that I can still shoot the ball, and it was kind of an off-year for me." Gregg finished in double figures 13 times last season, with four 20-point performances. He tied a season-high with 24 points on a perfect 10-of-10 shooting from the field in a win over Portland on Jan. 25, becoming the ninth player in conference history with 10 made shots without a miss. The 22-year-old is also working to improve his defensive abilities to better guard smaller players. He understands that skill set will be required to get on the court at the next level. "Obviously, defense I need to improve is the biggest feedback (from teams), being able to guard quicker guys," Gregg said. "Guys at this level are so fast and athletic, so just being able to stay in front of quicker guys has been the main thing for me." Gregg said his workout with the Trail Blazers on Tuesday was his fifth this draft cycle. He is scheduled to visit the Boston Celtics on Wednesday, with additional stops to be scheduled over the next three weeks, before the draft on June 25-26. The former Oregon Gatorade Player of the Year isn't currently projected to be selected this year, although he isn't getting caught up in mock drafts or things beyond his control. He wants to stay prepared for his next workout and continue to improve both on and off the court. "I'm running my own race right now," Gregg said. "I'm not really focused on the number where I'm getting drafted, where I get drafted to or if I get picked up (as) a free agent after the draft. I'm just kind of running my own race, and whatever happens, happens. Everything happens for a reason; it's God's plan. I'm taking it day by day and enjoying the process."

When Jared Curtis originally committed to Georgia last March, Kirby Smart likely thought he had the cornerstone of his 2026 class and quarterback of the future. Instead, Curtis threw a wrench in those plans with his decommitment in October. Despite that decision, Smart and the Bulldogs never let up and remained a constant presence in Curtis' recruitment. A few schools made the list for Curtis following his October decommitment. That list was narrowed down to two in late March after he announced his top two of Georgia and Oregon, as well as his commitment date. Since then, both schools have gone to work putting together their final pitches for Curtis. He recently hosted both coaching staff members ahead of his decision. He adds a massive boost to a Georgia class that is well off where the Bulldogs typically sit in the rankings since Smart returned home to Athens. Usually a top-three to five team in the rankings, Georgia's 2026 class ranked No. 26. None of their seven pledges at the time ranked as top-100 prospects.
