Trump's top diplomatic envoy Steve Witkoff took part in meetings in Moscow this week aimed at pushing Russia to agree to peace in Ukraine, but the results of those efforts are unclear.
Trump has turned increasingly critical of Putin for continuing his country's military assault on Ukraine while expressing openness to a ceasefire to Trump in their private discussions.
Trump on July 29 announced a 10-day deadline for Russia to agree to a ceasefire by Aug. 8 or face tariffs and sanctions.

Canada's Ivey PMI climbs to one-year high in July
TORONTO, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Canadian economic activity expanded in July at the fastest pace in one year as employment rose, Ivey Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) data showed on Thursday. The seasonally adjusted index rose to 55.8 last month from 53.3 in June, posting its highest level since July 2024. A reading above 50 indicates an increase in activity. The gauge of employment edged up to an adjusted 51.2 from 49.5 in June, while the prices index was at 68.5, down from 70.2. The unadjusted PMI was unchanged from June at 54.6.

Sunil Mittal-led entity launches $1 billion stake sale in India's Bharti Airtel, Moneycontrol reports
Aug 7 (Reuters) - Indian Continent Investment Ltd, a shareholding entity led by billionaire Sunil Mittal, has launched a block deal to sell a portion of its stake in Bharti Airtel ( opens new tab worth a little over $1 billion, Moneycontrol reported on Thursday, citing sources. The stake sale is at a floor price of 1,862 rupees ($21.30) per share, the report said. The price is at a 3.15% discount to the telecom operator's last closing price, according to data from LSEG. Indian Continent Investment, which sold, opens new tab a 0.84% stake in Bharti Airtel earlier this year, currently holds 2.47% of the firm and plans to offload around 0.8%, the report added. Shares of Turkey's Anadolu Efes, ENKA jump on Trump-Putin meeting hopes
GDANSK, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Shares of Turkey's largest construction company ENKA İnşaat ( opens new tab and brewer Anadolu Efes ( opens new tab rose on Thursday, reflecting investor hopes that the expected meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump could ease geopolitical tensions. ENKA Insaat was up 5.1% and Anadolu Efes gained 4.4% as of 1047 GMT, both trading at their highest levels since mid-May. Shares of Anadolu Grubu Holding ( opens new tab, the biggest shareholder of Anadolu Efes, also rose around 4%. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said on Thursday that Putin and Trump would meet in the coming days. A White House official had said on Wednesday that a meeting could take place as soon as next week. Such a face-to-face meeting would be the first between a sitting U.S. and Russian president since Joe Biden met Putin in Geneva in June 2021, some eight months before Russia launched its attack on Ukraine. "Expectations around the Putin-Trump meeting have triggered a move in Anadolu Efes shares in particular," said analyst Mustafa Kemal Eski from brokerage Marbaş Menkul Değerler. "There's a belief that a ceasefire could be on the table, which may lead to the lifting of the trustee overseeing Anadolu Efes' operations in Russia," he added. The brewer's Russia joint venture with AB InBev ( opens new tab was placed under temporary management by a presidential decree in December 2024. Russian authorities had earlier that year also rejected the sale of AB InBev's stake to its Turkish partner.
