Policy withdrawn, Bajwa seeks apology from CM, Kejriwal

Time of India4 days ago
Chandigarh: A day after Punjab govt announced to withdraw its contentious land pooling policy, leader of opposition (LoP) in state assembly Partap Singh Bajwa on Tuesday asked chief minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal issue a public, unconditional apology to Punjab farmers.
Bajwa claimed that the threat of the policy being enforced in the state caused mental and physical harassment to farmers. Bajwa said AAP govt was forced to roll back the policy not out of goodwill, but due to the unyielding resistance from Punjab's farmers and sustained pressure by the opposition, particularly the Congress. "No matter how hard AAP tries to spin the narrative, the people of Punjab have seen through their malicious designs," he said.
In related news, Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring said once Congress forms the govt in the state in 2027, it will first enact a law protecting the interests of farmers on the pattern of the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, which was passed by Manmohan Singh's govt.
Warring said Congress govt will bring a law in the state which will require the consent of at least 80% of people for such a law.

Criticising AAP govt in Punjab for trying to rob farmers and landowners of about 50,000 acres of land worth lakhs of crores of rupees, he said the new state law will ensure no injustice is done to the farmers the way the AAP govt tried to do by taking away the farmers' land.
Bajwa, meanwhile, congratulated farmers and the people of Punjab for forcing the policy's rollback. "AAP govt's web of deceit has been torn apart. The countdown to its political downfall has already begun," Bajwa declared.

ECB's rebel voice bows out with plea for transparency

The European Central Bank 's most rebellious rate-setter has one last suggestion before he departs this month: more transparency on policy decisions. Arch hawk Robert Holzmann , who's been comfortable delivering a lone 'no' vote on occasions during the ECB 's easing push, wants outsiders to glean more of an understanding of officials' thinking as they calibrate borrowing costs. He'd like to see a version of the Federal Reserve's dot plot, under which policymakers anonymously provide their projections for rates. Alternatively, views diverging from the narrative presented by President Christine Lagarde could be summarized and released. "When we start out, unanimity is a strong signal," Holzmann said in an interview before he cedes control of Austrian's central bank to former Economy Minister Martin Kocher. "But if the situation is not as clear in what direction you need to move because there are arguments in all directions, then I think deviations have information for the market." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The #1 Mistake Tinnitus Sufferers Make Every Night (I Did It for Years) Derila Ergo Undo The parting advice caps a six-year stint for Holzmann at the ECB, where the 76-year-old was among the staunchest supporters of the unprecedented ramp-up in rates unleashed to tame the euro zone's sharpest-ever spike in prices. With inflation returning toward the 2% target, Holzmann didn't back a June reduction that brought borrowing costs to the same level. He's also questioned other moves during the cutting campaign. Live Events But while Lagarde singled him out at a press conference this year for failing to fall in line with the rest of the 26-member Governing Council, Holzmann says he's never had any conflict with the ECB chief and speaks highly of her work. His plea to boost transparency came at a farewell dinner last month in Frankfurt, when asked by Lagarde for his thoughts on how the ECB could operate more effectively. The idea will probably remain just that, however, as a yearlong strategy review wrapped up only recently.

'Clear Attempt To Mislead': EC Fact-Checks Congress On Bihar 'Vote Theft' Video

Last Updated: The video, shared by Congress on X, shows several people making serious claims about fake voters and missing names in the electoral roll The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday slammed the Congress party over a video shared on social media, calling it AI-generated and 'not real". The poll body said the video is a 'clear attempt to mislead the people of Bihar". The video, posted on Congress's official X handle on Saturday, shows several people making serious claims about fake voters and missing names in the electoral roll. It features a woman saying real voters were shown as dead, an old man claiming 80 fake voters were registered at his address, and another man saying his voting rights had been 'stolen". These scenes include a disclaimer saying they are AI-generated. The video ends by urging people to join Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' in Bihar to protest alleged 'vote theft" and irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in the state. Hours after the video was posted, the Election Commission flagged it as 'misleading" and posted a fact-check on its official handle on X. It said the video is false and added that the electoral roll in Bihar is being prepared as per law, with full transparency. The Commission explained that the process involves the Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs), Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), and more than 90,000 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) across the state. It also said every voter in the Assembly constituency takes part in the verification process. The ECI further stated that more than 1.6 lakh Booth Level Agents (BLAs) from all 12 recognised political parties, including the Congress, are involved in the voter roll update. The poll body warned that spreading false information can damage public trust in elections and urged people not to fall for digitally altered videos. Meanwhile, the Congress has claimed the video showed the real concerns about voter data and called for action through Gandhi's yatra. The ECI, however, maintained that the SIR process is being carried out fairly and transparently with the involvement of all stakeholders.
