India's economic growth makes it a global stability anchor: NITI Aayog VC

India's sustained economic growth makes it an "anchor of stability for the world, which needs new engines of growth and development models that can be scaled and shared, Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog Suman Bery has said.
Bery addressed the ministerial segment of the High Level Political Forum for Sustainable Development Goals at UN Headquarters on Monday.
He said the world is navigating a period of significant economic shifts and uncertainty, which makes the international community's collective work on Sustainable Development Goals more critical than ever.
The world needs anchors of stability, new engines of growth and development models that can be scaled and shared. India, with its unique strengths and experience, is ready and willing to offer all three.
He underscored that India's sustained economic growth makes it an "anchor of stability for the global community and an example of what is possible.
In an era of flux, India stands out as a vibrant democracy with steadily improving socio-economic indicators enabled by inclusive digital technologies, principled reforms and a focus on empowering all segments of society, Bery said.
Further, he said that India is committed to catalysing change across the Global South.
"India's development journey, marked by scale, speed and stability, offers a credible and replicable pathway for fellow developing countries, Bery said.
Addressing the international community from the UNGA podium, Bery said 248 million Indians are estimated to have escaped poverty in the decade between 2013-14 and 2022-23.
With India today being home to the world's largest cohort of youth entering employment, the country is committed to making sure that they have a bright and productive future.
India's journey demonstrates that inclusive and sustainable development is both possible and scalable, Bery said.
India has extended concessional finance, technology partnerships and capacity building support across developing countries, including solar energy infrastructure and digital governance tools.
With the UN marking 80 years of existence, Bery said India reaffirms its belief in the UN as the cornerstone of multilateralism.
The UN must continue to serve as a catalyst for inclusive and sustainable development. India supports a more representative and effective UN system that reflects contemporary realities and empowers all nations to shape our shared future, he said.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, in remarks to the High-level Political Forum, said the international community is meeting at the forum against the backdrop of global conflicts that are pushing the Sustainable Development Goals further out of reach.
He sounded an alarm over the slowing global economy, rising trade tensions, growing inequalities and aid budgets being decimated while military spending soars.
And mistrust, division and outright conflicts are placing the international problem-solving system under unprecedented strain. We cannot sugarcoat these facts. But we must not surrender to them either. The SDGs are still within reach -- if we act with urgency and ambition, Guterres said.

Why should US trade with Russia and not allow others: China hits back at Trump

China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, Geng Shuang, slammed the United States for imposing tariffs on Beijing due to its trade with Russia, but pointed out how Washington continues to trade with Moscow despite sanctions and the Ukraine war. read more China slammed the United States and called out the hypocrisy of the West regarding trading with Russia. While speaking at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, Geng Shuang, refuted the claims made by the US representative. US President Donald Trump's administration has been accusing both India and China of helping Russia in the war with Ukraine by continuing to trade with Moscow, especially by buying oil. During the UNSC meeting, the Chinese representative pointed out how the US and the West continue to engage in trading with Russia despite the war and the sanctions. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'The US itself continues to engage in trade with Russia to this day. Why should it be acceptable for the US to do so, but not for others? Isn't this 'only allowing oneself to set fires while forbidding others from lighting lamps?'' China's deputy permanent representative to the UN said at the meeting. 'In fact, the US itself continues to engage in trade with Russia to this day. Why should it be acceptable for the US to do so, but not for others? China's deputy permanent representative… — Global Times (@globaltimesnews) August 1, 2025 China accuses the US of playing the blame game While speaking to the reporters after the meeting, Shuang once again reiterated the matter and said that it was not China that created the crisis in Ukraine. 'I responded to such accusations on multiple occasions in past meetings. Since the US insists on repeating the same rhetoric, I find it necessary to set the record straight once again," Shuang said. 'First, China is not the creator of the Ukraine crisis, nor is it a party to the conflict. China has never provided lethal weapons to any party involved in the conflict." 'We have always strictly controlled the export of dual-use items, including drones. Second, the UN Security Council has not imposed sanctions on any party to the conflict," he added. The Chinese UN representative made it clear that Beijing maintains trade ties with both Russia and Ukraine, in compliance with the trade law. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'China maintains normal trade relations with both Russia and Ukraine, in full compliance with international law and without breaching any international obligations. China's legitimate and lawful rights and interests must not be infringed upon," he said. 'Third, the Ukraine crisis is currently at a critical juncture, with a genuine prospect for a political resolution. The US cannot, on the one hand, ask China to play a constructive role in ending the war, while on the other hand, continuously smear and pressure China," he added. The Chinese representative concluded his argument by saying that the US should not be playing the blame game in this regard. The remarks from China came after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned Chinese officials that continued purchases of sanctioned Russian oil would lead to big tariffs due to legislation in Congress, but was told that Beijing would protect its energy sovereignty. India's oil purchase from Russia has been facing similar scrutiny. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Indian economy devastated by five Modi-inflicted shocks: Congress

The Congress on Friday (August 1, 2025) claimed that the Indian economy has been well and truly devastated by a series of "five Modi-inflicted shocks", and said the government, as well as its cheerleaders, are being economical with the truth of the real state of the economy. Congress general secretary in charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, said the Modi government, its drumbeaters and cheerleaders are living in a make-believe world. The Opposition party's assertions came a day after former Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, said everybody except Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman knows that the country's economy is "dead". Over the past decade, the Indian economy has been well and truly devastated by a series of five Modi-inflicted shocks. Nobody else can be held responsible. A… — Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) August 1, 2025 In a post on X, Mr. Ramesh said, "Over the past decade, the Indian economy has been well and truly devastated by a series of five Modi-inflicted shocks. Nobody else can be held responsible." He said demonetisation completely disrupted our growth momentum and destroyed the livelihoods of crores of Indians. "A fundamentally flawed GST--that is a Tax that is neither Good nor Simple--has wreaked havoc on thousands of business enterprises across the country, except the large companies who can afford to pay the cost associated with GST compliance," Ramesh said. He further claimed that the record imports from China have led to the closure of lakhs of MSMEs across the country in — Gujarat alone, around a third of the MSMEs in the stainless steel industry have shut down their operations. Exports in key areas are dependent on imports of raw materials, components, and intermediates from China, he said. Mr. Ramesh pointed out that private investment has lost the buoyancy it demonstrated during 2004-14. "Indian industrialists are acquiring citizenship of other countries in an ever-increasing measure. The politically motivated and extortionist Raid Raj, coupled with the proliferation of Modani's tentacles, has led to a loss of confidence in the Indian economy," Mr. Ramesh alleged. He argued that wages for the majority of Indians have stagnated in the last decade, across sectors and across classes. "This is particularly so in rural India. Household savings have fallen sharply just as household debt has ballooned. Private mass consumption, one of the key drivers of growth, is sputtering just as luxury consumption has not ebbed, clearly pointing to sharpening economic inequalities," the Congress leader said. "The Modi government, its drumbeaters and cheerleaders are living in a make-believe world. They are being economical with the truth of the real state of the economy," Mr. Ramesh said. On Thursday, Mr. Gandhi had alleged that the BJP-led government has destroyed the country's economic, defence and foreign policies, and is "running the country to the ground". Speaking with reporters in the Parliament House complex, Mr. Gandhi had also claimed that a trade deal with the US will happen and US President Donald Trump will define it. Asked about Trump calling the Indian economy "dead", the Congress leader had said, "He is right, everybody knows this except the prime minister and the finance minister. Everybody knows that the Indian economy is a dead economy. I am glad that President Trump has stated a fact." He had alleged that the BJP has destroyed the Indian economy.
