JKR staff urged to maintain performance amid criticism
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi emphasised the need for resilience amid public scrutiny, especially following incidents involving infrastructure.
Nanta highlighted the recent fatal bus accident in Gerik, Perak, where 15 UPSI students lost their lives. He clarified misconceptions surrounding the incident, explaining that the bus had overturned due to speeding, landing on the guardrail.
'Some claimed the guardrail was the main cause, but the actual fact was the bus's speed,' he said.
The minister acknowledged that while current guardrail designs may have risks, alternative solutions are under review. He stressed that JKR often faces blame even when incidents involve multiple factors beyond infrastructure.
Speaking at the 2025 Senior Officers Conference (SOC) for JKR Malaysia, Nanta encouraged personnel to focus on service excellence. Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan and JKR Director-General Datuk Roslan Ismail were also present. - Bernama
Nanta noted that despite JKR's swift responses to road-related issues, complaints are sometimes exaggerated online. He urged staff to remain transparent and dedicated to dispel negative perceptions.
Around 400 senior JKR officers nationwide are attending the three-day SOC 2025, themed 'JKR Mampan: Memacu Kelestarian MADANI'. The conference aims to foster unity and sustainable service improvements.

Stop building traffic roundabouts: Justin
Published on: Friday, July 18, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 18, 2025 By: Lagatah Toyos Text Size: According to Wong, the project received objections from more than 7,000 Tawau residents who signed a petition launched in March. TAWAU: Sri Tanjong Assemblyman Justin Wong again urged the Government to stop construction of traffic roundabouts along Jalan Sin Onn. He said the plan to build two roundabouts was shortsighted and dismissive of public opinion. Advertisement 'This project risks worsening traffic congestion and contradicts the principle of putting people first,' he said, adding it failed to consider the long-term interests of the community. Wong, instead, called for Jalan Sin Onn to be upgraded into a dual carriageway, which he said would bring genuine long-term development to the area and surrounding neighbourhoods. 'I appeal to the Ministry of Finance to reconsider and upgrade the road to a dual carriageway,' he said, questioning why that option was not chosen. He said the project appears one-sided and short-term in nature, potentially slowing down traffic flow in key areas such as Pasar Sin On, nearby residential zones, supermarkets and commercial lots. He also raised safety concerns, pointing out that one of the roundabouts is being built next to SJK (C) Hing Hwa, which could pose risks to schoolchildren and parents. According to Wong, the project received objections from more than 7,000 Tawau residents who signed a petition launched in March. The signatures were collected over three weeks and submitted to the State Government and Public Works Department (JKR), but the project still went ahead. 'I even held discussions with JKR, but they couldn't guarantee that traffic would improve after the roundabouts are built. Nor could they confirm whether the risk of accidents would increase,' he said. The roundabouts are part of the Whiterose City development project, approved by JKR on April 29, 2022. The plan included roundabout construction based on a Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) report, which has yet to be made public. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Works Ministry records RM94mil in 2024 flood damage
MARANG: The Works Ministry (KKR) recorded RM94.17mil in damage caused by floods in 2024, mostly involving infrastructure such as roads. Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said most of the infrastructure damaged by last year's floods has been repaired, including in Terengganu (RM22.13mil), Kelantan (RM20.38mil) and Perak (RM33.4mil). "This shows that the government is always concerned about areas affected by the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) and recent floods. We have extended assistance, and whatever needed repairs have been fixed,' he told reporters after inspecting the new Marang bridge upgrading project today. He added that the ministry is also prepared for the upcoming MTL expected at the end of this year. Among the preparations in place is a Disaster Operations Room to receive information and respond to complaints about flood-related infrastructure damage. "This operations room is open year-round, but during the MTL season, we will intensify its activities. We will monitor all affected areas nationwide,' he said. Meanwhile, Terengganu Infrastructure, Utilities and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Hanafiah Mat said nearly 90 per cent of roads in the state damaged by last year's floods have been repaired by the federal government through the ministry. "Only one road has yet to be repaired - a slope road in Bukit Besi (in Dungun). I understand the tender for that repair work will be issued in two months. All the rest are in good shape,' he said. He also expressed his appreciation to the Federal Government, particularly the Works Ministry, for carrying out the repairs and thanked Nanta for personally inspecting the progress of flood-affected infrastructure restoration. - Bernama
