Stoops v. Brown one of eight greatest coaching rivalries of 21st century

USA Today01-07-2025
Twenty-five years into the millennium and lists abound about the best such-and-such over the first quarter-century.
One of the most intriguing such lists - when it comes to college football, anyway - is CBS Sports' look at some of the game's biggest coaching rivalries. Different, in part, from team rivalries, a coaching rivalry can exist with animosity even when one of the coaches changes schools.
For the Oklahoma man on the list, though, he certainly didn't.
Former OU head coach Bob Stoops' rivalry with ex-Texas head man Mack Brown is the very first rivalry listed on CBS' look. The two met 15 times over Stoops' 18 full seasons in Norman. OU took nine of the 15 games. Four of the nine wins came by an average margin of 45 points.
"Both teams were ranked in 12 of the 15 games shared between Brown and Stoops. That includes four top-five matchups. Stoops won a national title in 2000 after trouncing Texas 63-14 in the regular season, and Brown followed that up in 2005 with a 45-12 win against Oklahoma on the march to a Longhorns national championship," author Will Backus wrote in the ranking.
Stoops retired from collegiate coaching in 2017, though he did return for one game in 2021 after the man who replaced him in OU, Lincoln Riley, had left for Southern California before the Sooners' Alamo Bowl win over Oregon. Brown coached Texas from 1998-2013. He returned to college football in 2017 with North Carolina, the place he began his FBS head coaching career, before being fired at the end of last season.
Stoops ranks first in Oklahoma history in wins with 191, and his .799 winning percentage trails only Barry Switzer (.837) and Bud Wilkinson (.826).

Iowa women's basketball offers top-10 2028 recruit Arianna Robinson

Iowa women's basketball added another name to their impressive list of prospects by extending an offer to 2028 four-star guard Arianna Robinson on Thursday. At 5-foot-10, the Texas native currently stars for Plano East High School's varsity squad, competes for the Nike ProSkills 17U EYBL and recently won gold as part of USA Basketball's national team at the U16 Women's AmeriCup. Robinson is already highly thought of in the 2028 cycle, checking in as the No. 10 overall recruit in ESPN's 2028 SportsCenter NEXT-Terrific 25. In her lone varsity season so far for Plano East, Robinson averaged an impressive 20.3 points, 7.4 rebounds and 3.1 steals per game through en route to All-Area Player of the Year honors from The Dallas Morning News. In addition to Iowa, Robinson has also received offers from other premier women's college basketball programs, including Texas, Michigan State, USC, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, TCU, Kansas State, and Kentucky. As she continues to receive offers and eventually schedule visits as a part of her recruitment process over the next year or so, Iowa hopes its recent success over the past five seasons and upward trajectory under head coach Jan Jensen will entice Robinson to join the program. A look at how Bo Nix, Jarrett Stidham fit in the Denver Broncos' QB room for 2025

The ex-Tigers will battle it out for the role of QB1 again in Denver this training camp. The Denver Broncos are known for their orange and blue colors. Also, their quarterback room has some history with the colors as well. Both starter Bo Nix and backup Jarrett Stidham played at Auburn. That is not breaking news. Nix had a surprising and stellar rookie season for the Broncos in 2024 and helped lead the team to the postseason. Last season, Nix threw for 3,775 yards and 29 touchdowns as a rookie. The Broncos closed out the season with a 5-2 record before losing in the AFC Wildcard 31-7 to the Buffalo Bills. Nix played his first three seasons with the Tigers before transferring to Oregon for his final two seasons. While operating a proper offense at Oregon, he showed the NFL his capabilities as a quarterback. He had moments at Auburn but was more consistent in Eugene. Stidham returns to the Broncos for his third season as the backup to Nix. He has played for three different NFL franchises, including the Broncos. Stidham started his career with the New England Patriots before playing for the Raiders. Stidham was tasked with being the guy to replace Tom Brady in New England. The team would sign another former Auburn quarterback, Cam Newton. Stidham would spend his time with the Patriots as a backup. He would be traded to Las Vegas for the 2022 season. Stidham started the final two games of the 2022 season. He had a big game in his first start versus the San Francisco 49ers. In a 37-34 overtime loss, Stidham threw for 365 yards and three touchdowns. He would then become a member of the Broncos starting with the 2023 season. That first season, he was the backup to Russell Wilson but started the final two games after he was benched. While he may have aspired to be a full-time starting quarterback in the NFL, Stidham has built a solid career as a backup quarterback. A reliable one too.
