Orlando Pirates: Huge, fundamental changes coming!
Jose Riveiro will be a tough act to follow. Who will Orlando Pirates hire to succeed a wildly successful Spaniard? Rulani Mokwena's name is also on the shortlist, along with that of Pitso Mosimane. Riveiro's countryman Pablo Franco Martin is in the frame. Former Sundowns manager Rulani Mokwena has vacated his post as head coach of Wydad AC. The 38-year-old has been strongly linked with a return to Orlando Pirates, and Rulani isn't doing much to quell those rumours. He served as Josef Zinnbauer's assistant in the 2019-2020 campaign. 44-year-old Pablo Franco Martin is a serious candidate for the top coaching job at Pirates. The Madrid-born tactician has held several interesting roles. Those include Opposition Analyst for Real Madrid and Head Coaching posts for Tanzanian side Simba SC, AmaZulu, Kuwaiti outfit Qadsia SC and now Al-Faisaly in Saudi Arabia's second tier. Image: IOL Nkosinathi Sibisi seems to be the leading candidate to take over the Pirates captaincy. The 29-year-old recently skippered Bafana Bafana in a friendly and is highly thought of within the camp. Whether or not he's a regular in the side when Thabiso Sesane returns is another matter. Sesane has sat out several months after undergoing surgery on a damaged tendon. When the 25-year-old is back to full fitness, he'll undoubtedly go back into the side. Click for the full list of candidates It's unlikely that wholesale changes will be made to a settled, predominantly young playing squad. However, there are a couple of key areas needing improvement. 24-year-old Marumo Gallants midfield general Masindi Nemtajela is seen as a natural successor to the impressive but ageing Makhehlene Makhaula. The all-action schemer claimed a goal, two assists and four yellow cards in 17 league outings last term. Who's your top pick to become the new Pirates boss? Orlando Pirates new captain decided?
The winds of change are blowing through Orlando Pirates. The Sea Robbers will soon have a new man at the helm and a new player wearing the captain's armband. Innocent Maela has been released. Nkosinathi Sibisi, Thalente Mbatha and Thabiso Sesane are all candidates to take over the captaincy. Who leads the charge? Nkosinathi Sibisi seems to be the leading candidate to take over the Pirates captaincy. Sesane was outstanding in the centre of defence at the outset of last season, quietly marshalling the back four and leading by example. Gifted teenager Mbekezeli Mbokazi has earned his spot on the left side of that pairing. Could Sesane also get the armband? Another contender is all-action midfielder Thalente Mbatha. Dream Pirates XI Tshegofatso Mabasa, Thalente Mbatha, Kabelo Dlamini, and Makhehleni Makhaula. Image: @safootclassics/X Chaine; Van Rooyen, Sesane, Mbokazi, Hotto; Mbatha, Nemtajela; Nkota, Maswanganyi, Mofokeng; Mabasa. The Pirates squad is blessed with players at the sharp end and in both central defence and midfield. However, they lack depth in the full-back areas. Thabiso Monyane and Paseka Mako have been released, while they've secured the signing of versatile Baroka star Tshepho Mashiloane. He should challenge both Deano van Rooyen and Deon Hotto for a place. 'Orlando Pirates are emptying the recycling bin now' Who should be the next Pirates skipper? Marioné Fourie delivers powerful finish to take second in Hengelo
Marioné Fourie delivered a storming push at the death to finish second by one-hundredth of a second behind Dutch star Nadine Visser in the women's 100m hurdles at the FBK Games at Hengelo, the Netherlands. At the halfway point she was well back of Visser, fourth at the Paris Olympics last year, but the South African switched on the after-burners over the final three hurdles to rocket up the field. Fourie dipped on the line, her effort causing her to lose balance and she tumbled to the ground, but it wasn't enough to catch Visser, first in 12.59sec.
