Fantasy novel reimagines Welsh mythology for young readers
The Wicked Lies of Habren Faire by Cardiff-based writer Anna Fiteni will be published on August 28 and is set in a Welsh mining village in the 1800s.
Inspired by Welsh mythology and written with elements of the Welsh language, the story follows Sabrina Parry in a quest to save her sister Ceridwen.
Ms Fiteni said: "The Wicked Lies of Habren Faire is, ultimately, a love letter to growing up weird, classic guyliner-wearing YA romantic heroes, sisters, and my home, Wales.
"I was inspired by a lot of other stories and films while writing, like Pan's Labyrinth, Into the Woods and Hadestown, and beloved YA novels like The Cruel Prince and An Enchantment of Ravens.
"Mix those with a childhood fascination with Peter Pan and the illustrations of Cicely Mary Barker, and the lasting memory of a school trip down a coal mine, and here we are."
Ms Fiteni wrote the book while in her final year of studying in England and is shaped by Wales.
"I was lucky to be exposed to a fair bit of Welsh mythology when I was young. This isn't the case for every Welsh child," she said.
"Like the language, Welsh history and stories aren't always accessible. I noticed this particularly in the fantasy books I read.
"We have a wealth of weird and wonderful myths in Wales, but I rarely saw them put to paper. It was rarer still to see that writing done by a Welsh author."

A school run turned into a life-changing moment for one Welsh dad as he was surprised with a £208k Lamborghini and a briefcase full of £50k in BOTB's biggest-ever spot the ball prize. An avid player of spot the ball competitions finally had his lucky day when his persistence paid off and he won a £200,000 Lamborghini. Matt Jones, from Wales, had just returned from the school run when a pair of presenters from the dream car giveaway firm BOTB knocked on his door and surprised him with the keys to a bright blue Lamborghini URUS SUV. The car alone is worth £208,000, but he was then led around to the boot to see the second part of his prize - a briefcase containing £50,000. Matt said he had been playing BOTB's spot the ball competitions for a long time, but he says he had a feeling this might be his lucky game. Matt had to guess the location of the ball to the nearest pixel - and he nailed it | BOTB He said: "I've been playing for so long, I just thought I've got to win this, I just believed in myself and kept going. "You get that feeling after a while, you know roughly where to go. I've been one pixel away once, and two pixels away twice, but this week most of it was just 'feel'. Matt confessed he doesn't really watch football, but he had watched a few videos to get a feel for the spot the ball competition. BOTB gives away dream cars every week, but the Lamborghini Urus SE is the most expensive spot the ball prize anyone has won. Presenter Christian Williams presented him with the keys to the brand new car | BOTB Including the £50,000 cash prize, his prize pot is worth £258,000 - but Matt says he is likely to take the cash alternative of £146,000 to help his brother out. He explained: "I'll probably take the money. My brother's got two children as well, I can give him some money to help them, give them a bit of a start in life. "It just feels like the right thing to do, help them out a bit." Matt's entry into the Lamborghini spot the ball competition cost £6.15, but new car prizes start at 90p. Texas open Llangollen concert series with Mike Peters tribute
The concert, on June 26, marked the opening of the Pavilion's summer season of live music. Before launching into one of the band's songs, Spiteri, lead singer and frontwoman of the Scottish rock band, paused to remember the Welsh rocker, who died from blood cancer aged 66 on April 29. "Before we start this song, the last time I was here with my husband Bryn was with a very special couple and very special man, Mr Mike Peters," she said, prompting a round of applause from the audience. She went on to say: "He was a true gentleman, a great musician, a great songwriter. He was one of the kindest, truest people that I have to say I've ever met. "He always wore his heart on his sleeve and will be very sadly missed." Spiteri, who has been awarded an honorary doctorate for her services to music, then dedicated a rendition of Suspicious Minds to his memory. She said to the crowd: "If you don't know if the first two chords, go home! Because you need to love this." Posting on Facebook after the concert, Jules, Mike's wife, said: "Today has been quite the day, topped off by the perfect Sharleen Spiteri tribute tonight to our darling Michael Peters "Thank you Texas! You Rock! RELATED STORIES "Hard to believe that it was only a year ago that Mike and I stood with Sharleen and husband Bryn at the side of stage to watch the Manics [Manic Street Preachers] together. "Live Today. Love Tomorrow." During the packed-out concert, Texas showcased five decades of music - from the worldwide classic I Don't Want a Lover to modern-day hits like Mr Haze and Keep on Talking. The music legends were supported by Rianne Downey, a Scottish singer-songwriter. The concert series coincides with the Llangollen International Eisteddfod, which begins on July 8. Texas were the first of 13 headline acts set to perform at the North Wales venue. Other confirmed headliners include Rag'n'Bone Man, UB40 featuring Ali Campbell, James, The Script, Olly Murs, and The Human League. The concerts are part of a collaboration between Live Nation promoters Cuffe and Taylor and the Llangollen International Eisteddfod. TK Maxx Presents Live at Llangollen Pavilion continues on Friday (June 28) with headline Rag'n'Bone Man. The triple BRIT Award and Ivor Novello Award winner will be joined by blues star Elles Bailey.
