CBI extradites man accused of fraud from US
'Chandhok was brought to the IGI Airport where the CBI detained him and later put him under arrest. He was produced before a special court which sent him to judicial custody,' a CBI spokesperson said in a statement.
According to the CBI, Chandhok, who was wanted in a case of allegedly cheating Union Bank of India in 2014, had managed to escape to the US in 2016 with his family members. 'Chandhok along with his family members — father Surendra Singh, mother Harleen Kaur and brother Harsahib Singh — in a criminal conspiracy with four other accused including bank officials cheated the Union Bank of India causing wrongful loss to the bank. They were declared proclaimed offenders and open-ended arrest warrants were issued against them by the court,' the spokesperson said.
In 2017, the CBI obtained the Interpol Red Notice against Chandhok, which alerts all the member countries to locate and detain the wanted person. 'Efforts are continuing for the return of Chandhok's family members, who are the other wanted accused in this case. The return of Chandhok will help in starting the trial,' the spokesperson added.
The CBI as the national bureau for Interpol in India coordinates with all law enforcement agencies in the world for assistance via Interpol channels.
'Since, 2021, over 100 wanted criminals have been returned to India via Interpol channel,' the spokesperson said.

Activists have called for the law criminalising superstition to be implemented nationwide and for the Maharashtra law, enacted following Dabholkar's death, to be reinforced. The youths committed to following a rationalist path, rejecting superstition, and pledged to continue Dabholkar's work. They also chanted the victory of the Constitution of India during the walk. One participant said, "The Constitution clearly defines that the state, that is, govt machinery, should take steps to create awareness of scientific thoughts; however, it rarely happens, and the responsibility comes upon us to take the thought forward. High court notice to OMC on CBI plea for tougher penalty
Hyderabad: Justice K Lakshman of the Telangana high court on Wednesday issued a notice to Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC), which was convicted in an illegal mining case, directing it to respond to an appeal filed by the CBI. The CBI has challenged the trial court's order, arguing that the penalty of ₹1 lakh imposed on the company was 'grossly inadequate' and must be enhanced to serve as a deterrent against corporate fraud. On May 6, the principal special judge for CBI cases, Hyderabad, had convicted OMC under sections 120-B and 420 of the IPC and imposed a fine of ₹1,00,000. The court further ruled that if the penalty was not paid, the company's managing director, BV Srinivas Reddy, would undergo one year's simple imprisonment. According to the prosecution, OMC, in collusion with public servants and private players, engaged in deliberate boundary shifting, unauthorised road construction inside forest areas, and large-scale illegal extraction and transport of iron ore. It was also alleged that the company demolished the historic Sugalamma temple within the forest to further its operations. The CBI alleged that over 29.32 lakh metric tonnes of iron ore were illegally dispatched, causing massive revenue losses to the state exchequer. CBI arrests NHAI project director in bribery case
Hyderabad: The CBI on Tuesday arrested Golla Durga Prasad, project director of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Warangal, and Venu Yadav, a private individual, for allegedly accepting 60,000 as bribe from a restaurant owner. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On Aug 8, Vijay Bhasker, proprietor of Sri Taaza Kitchen near Gudur Toll Plaza in Bibinagar on Hyderabad-Warangal Highway, submitted a written complaint saying NHAI officials had dug pits in front of his restaurant, hindering its operations. He alleged that officials issued notices despite his approval from the gram panchayat. Furthermore, Bhasker claimed that Venu Yadav, acting on behalf of Durga Prasad, demanded 1 lakh as a bribe, saying other hotel owners had already paid up. The complainant recorded phone calls in which Durga Prasad threatened to shut down his restaurant. After verification of these recordings, CBI confirmed the allegations. As a result, the govt of Telangana granted consent under Section 6 of the DSPE Act, enabling the agency to register the case on Aug 19. Durga Prasad allegedly instructed the complainant to hand over 60,000 to Venu, assuring him there would be no hindrance to the restaurant's operation for the next five years of his tenure. Since Bhasker could not arrange the money, Prasad followed up with calls, pressing for payment the next day. The CBI laid a trap on Aug 19 and caught both accused red-handed. Following the arrests, CBI conducted searches at three locations — Hyderabad, Warangal, and Sadashivpet — and seized incriminating documents.
