This Longtime Tesla Bull Just Issued a New Warning for TSLA Stock Holders

Yahoo14-07-2025
Morgan Stanley's Adam Jonas, a prominent Tesla (TSLA) bull, issued a stark warning to shareholders following CEO Elon Musk's announcement that he was launching the 'America Party,' a new political venture targeting strategic congressional seats.
Jonas cautioned investors to brace for continued political distractions, writing that they 'should be prepared for further devotion of resources (financial, time/attention) in the direction of Mr. Musk's political priorities which may add further near-term pressure to TSLA shares.'

The warning comes as Tesla stock plummeted nearly 7% on Monday, July 7, erasing over $68 billion in market capitalization. Jonas believes Musk's political activism represents 'part of a planned strategy to achieve a specific goal' rather than random involvement, suggesting these distractions aren't temporary.
Tesla's fundamentals remain challenged, with Q2 deliveries declining 14% year-over-year to 384,000 vehicles. Morgan Stanley projects another 13% volume decline in the second half of 2025.
However, Jonas maintains optimism around Tesla's pivot to robotics and AI. He calculates that replacing just 10% of Tesla's 125,665 employees with humanoid robots could generate $2.5 billion in value, at an approximate net present value of $200,000 per unit.
With earnings approaching on July 23, Jonas expects Tesla to emphasize its robotaxi roadmap and potentially announce an AI Day to recruit talent, positioning Tesla's future beyond traditional automotive manufacturing.
Analysts tracking Tesla stock expect Q2 revenue to fall by 11% year over year to $22.4 billion while adjusted earnings are forecast to narrow by 20% to $0.41 per share.
Tesla has failed to beat revenue and earnings estimates in four of the last five quarters. The EV maker missed revenue estimates by 9.3% and earnings estimates by 37% in Q1, but TSLA stock still gained 5.4% following the release of its results.
Tesla's earnings underperformance is forecast to continue for the rest of 2025. According to consensus estimates, Tesla is expected to report an earnings decline of 25% compared to the 7.4% earnings growth for the S&P 500 index this year.
Tesla shares have declined 22% year-to-date as the company faces weakening EV demand, political uncertainty, and CEO Elon Musk's controversial leadership style. Despite trading at a premium adjusted forward earnings ratio of 170x, Tesla's fundamentals are deteriorating.
The 'Musk premium' that historically supported Tesla's valuation is eroding. Recent legislation eliminating the $7,500 EV tax credit, ending residential solar support, and rolling back emissions regulations poses significant challenges for Tesla's core business.
Moreover, Tesla faces intensifying competition, from legacy automakers, other EV startups, and Chinese rivals that have government support in the Chinese market. Elsewhere, Musk's political antics risk alienating consumers and inviting regulatory retaliation.
Tesla's next three years will be make or break as it attempts to deploy robotaxis nationwide while navigating these substantial headwinds. Investors may want to avoid the stock until greater clarity emerges on these multiple challenges.
Out of the 40 analysts covering Tesla stock, 12 recommend 'Strong Buy,' two recommend 'Moderate Buy,' 16 recommend 'Hold,' and 10 recommend 'Strong Sell.' The average target price for TSLA stock is $297, 6% below the current trading price.

AI could deliver $920B in annual net benefits to S&P 500 firms

-- Artificial intelligence could generate annual net benefits of roughly $920 billion for S&P 500 companies, according to Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS). The bank said in a note Monday that its analysis points to '$13-16 trillion in long-term market value creation potential for the S&P 500' driven by AI adoption. The report highlights that '90% of occupations will to some degree be impacted by AI automation and augmentation,' with the potential benefits coming from both cost reductions and productivity gains. Morgan Stanley noted that agentic AI, essentially software-based applications, will likely have 'a broader impact on jobs relative to embodied AI,' with greater scope for augmentation rather than outright replacement. Sector exposure is said to vary widely. The bank found that Consumer Staples Distribution/Retail, Real Estate Management & Development, and Transportation could each see savings above 100% of estimated 2026 pretax earnings. Health Care Equipment & Services was also flagged as a major beneficiary. By contrast, Technology Hardware & Equipment and Semiconductors show relatively muted effects. Morgan Stanley emphasised that the value creation potential, equal to 24-29% of current S&P 500 market capitalisation, is 'fundamentally bullish for AI enablers and adopters.' It added that the return on the roughly $3 trillion in expected global AI capex through 2028 in areas such as data centres and chips 'is attractive.' While the $920 billion figure represents a full-adoption scenario that may take years to achieve, the bank argued that the long-term opportunity is likely far larger. 'AI adoption market value creation potential, beyond the confines of the S&P 500, is likely to be multiples of the $13-16 trillion,' Morgan Stanley said. China's EV industry is spending more on factories abroad than at home for the first time

BEIJING — Chinese electric car companies are increasing investments in overseas factories as they ramp up competition against Tesla and other global automakers. For the first time since records going back to 2014, the Chinese electric car supply chain last year invested more outside the country than at home, according to a U.S.-based consulting firm Rhodium Group report published Monday. The bulk of announced overseas investment, or 74%, was in battery factories, the report said. But it noted investment in assembly plants abroad was also "growing rapidly." The spending plans come as Chinese automakers face intense competition at home and higher tariffs on exports. Boosting investments abroad can help Chinese businesses win foreign governments' support for market expansion. "Growing regulatory pushback in host markets like the EU is raising barriers to entry and will push more Chinese companies to establish local manufacturing operations," the Rhodium report said. The Chinese electric car industry's domestic investment in manufacturing tumbled sharply to $15 billion in 2024 from $41 billion in 2023 — after peaking at over $90 billion in 2022 in announced projects, according to Rhodium data. While overseas investment has remained far lower, it "narrowly surpassed" domestic levels in 2024 for the first time, the report said, without sharing an exact figure. Automotive was the second-most active sector for Chinese outbound investment in the second quarter this year, according to a separate Rhodium study released late July. The materials and metals sector ranked first. "We recorded higher than usual activity by EV parts manufacturers, with eight transactions exceeding $100 million," the July report said. "The largest among them was led by GEM, a Chinese battery materials manufacturer, which committed $293 million to expand its ternary precursors facility in Indonesia." Several overseas factory projects announced in recent years have also begun operations. Great Wall Motor announced over the weekend it opened its first factory in Brazil on Friday local time. The company is also reportedly considering another factory in the region and would make the decision as soon as the middle of next year. The Chinese automaker did not immediately respond to a CNBC request for comment. BYD also started production at its first Brazil factory in July, despite getting fined earlier in the year over labor practices. The Chinese electric car giant has sold more than 545,000 cars overseas this year as of July, exceeding the total of more than 417,000 vehicles for the whole of 2024, according to CNBC calculations of publicly disclosed data. Earlier this summer, Chinese battery supplier Envision announced in June it officially started production at its first factory in France. However, those investments abroad comprise completed projects only. Just 25% of all announced overseas manufacturing plans by the Chinese electric car industry have been completed, far below the 45% rate for those at home, Rhodium said in Monday's report, noting projects outside the country are twice as likely to get cancelled. "Chinese firms will also have to manage Beijing's increasing concern over technology leakage, job losses, and industrial hollowing-out, which may result in tighter controls on outbound investment in strategic sectors," the report said.
