Shafie: Warisan still Sabah-centric despite Peninsular expansion, will contest state polls solo

Malay Mail10 hours ago
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal has reportedly insisted that Parti Warisan remains a Sabah-centric party, dismissing claims it lost that identity when it expanded to Peninsular Malaysia.
The Warisan president said the party has consistently fought for Sabah's interests and will continue to share its vision for Sabahans in the upcoming state election.
'It's meaningless to be known as a local party by name but our voice is not [outspoken on] local [issues]. Warisan is a local party,' he was quoted saying by Free Malaysia Today.
'When Warisan contested in the peninsula, some parties there accused us of being disruptive. But when their parties contest in Sabah, it's not?' he asked, accusing certain West Malaysian parties of hypocrisy.
Shafie said the party's expansion into the peninsula aimed to raise awareness among Malaysians about the capabilities of Sabah parties, noting that others like Parti Bersatu Sabah and Upko had done the same.
He also insisted that the party will contest the state election alone, without any alliance with Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional, or Gabungan Rakyat Sabah.
Shafied added that going solo is part of Warisan's plan to show it can form the next Sabah government independently, as Berjaya and PBS did in the past.
'If Berjaya and PBS could do it, why not Warisan?' he said, citing the administrations led by Tan Sri Harris Salleh and Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan.
Shafie was responding to former Warisan women's chief Datuk Norazlinah Arif, who accused the party of losing its local identity.
Norazlinah had argued that Warisan's move into Peninsular Malaysia, including fielding candidates in the 15th general election (GE15), showed it was shifting away from prioritising Sabah and positioning Shafie for the prime minister's post.
In December 2020, Shafie announced that the party had unanimously decided to spread its wings to the Peninsula, starting with branches and divisions in Johor and Selangor, where there are high concentrations of Sabahans.
Subsequently, it contested in six seats in the Johor state election in 2022, and fielded more candidates in 24 federal and 16 state seats in Peninsular Malaysia for GE15.

Over 10,000 show solidarity to Zara in KK

Thousands turned for the Himpunan Mega Solidariti #JusticeForZara at Padang Merdeka in Kota Kinabalu tonight. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 15): More than 10,000 people thronged Padang Merdeka here tonight to show solidarity to the late Zara Qairina Mahathir. Members of the public started gathering at the field as early as 7pm, carrying placards and banners depicting their support for the Form One student. The venue was visibly packed after 8pm, with several government and opposition leaders and members also spotted at the scene. It was understood that the event was organised by a coalition of non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Irwan Idrus, who came with five friends and family members from Tanjung Aru, attended the gathering to show his support to the late Zara and family. He expressed frustration that the case has been going on for some time but there is still no conclusion, as he lamented slow action by the relevant authorities. Irwan (second right) with family and friends attending the gathering to show support to the late Zara and family. 'So we hope that with the power of the rakyat, we can pressure the authorities to provide a swift conclusion to the case so that we can find out what really happened to Zara,' he told The Borneo Post when met. Among the political leaders present was Sepanggar Member of Parliament Datuk Ts Mustapha Sakmud, who went on stage and joined the public in demanding justice for Zara. Mustapha told the crowd that he forgives all those who tried to implicate his wife in the case, a rumour that had previously spread on social media. Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) legal advisor Chin Tek Ming also went on stage and addressed the crowd in a show of solidarity. Other Warisan members spotted were vice president Datuk Junz Wong, Putatan chief Datuk Uda Sulai as well as Darau assemblyman Datuk Azhar Matussin. State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew also spoke to reporters at the location. Liew said they gathered there as concerned citizens to reaffirm the ''No' to School Bullying' message, and to advocate for institutional reforms in residential schools. She proposed the pressing need to do away with any 'reactive approach' whereby the relevant authorities may only respond when a tragedy occurs, causing the loss of lives. 'We demand justice for 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir in unison. 'A promising life was cut short under mysterious circumstances. 'Her tragic death must not be in vain,' she said. Two more rallies are expected to he held on Saturday at Taman Chong Thien Vun and Lintasan Deasoka.

The investigation into a video featuring Dr Akmal Saleh was taken over by Bukit Aman's special crime investigation unit today, Penang police said. PETALING JAYA : Police have launched an investigation into a viral Facebook video featuring Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh making statements that were considered to be 'hate speech' that could disturb public peace. Penang police chief Azizee Ismail said an investigation under the Sedition Act and the Penal Code (for criminal intimidation) was launched after a report was lodged on Aug 12. The case was taken over today by the special crime investigation unit of Bukit Aman, he said in a statement this evening. Azizee Ismail. 'To date, two police reports have been filed by members of the public in Penang, and both reports are currently being investigated,' he said. It was not clear which video is the subject of the investigation. However, in recent days, Akmal has posted videos concerning a Jalur Gemilang mishap at a Penang hardware store, where the national flag was hoisted upside down. The store owner later corrected the mistake and apologised, but was briefly arrested before being released on bail. In one of Akmal's videos, he said prosecutors had two days to charge the shop owner, failing which he said he would personally 'teach this 'Ah Pek' (uncle) how to correctly put up a flag'. Address gaps in permanent parliamentary committee proposal, MPs told

The Dewan Rakyat passed amendments to several provisions of its Standing Orders on Aug 12. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The G25 group of prominent retired civil servants has called on MPs to close the gaps in the government's plan to make parliamentary special select committees (PSSCs) permanent. While it backed the government's move on the matter, the group warned that the current proposal had gaps that could undermine its effectiveness. Its concerns included the standing orders committee's proposed cap of 10 PSSCs, which G25 said would be insufficient to cover all ministries and cross-ministerial portfolios, which could overburden MPs and leave key policy areas without scrutiny. 'The absence of a requirement for future governments to place all ministries and major public institutions under committee oversight could also result in serious blind spots. 'If ministerial roles change or new agencies are created without this requirement, some of them might escape proper oversight,' it said in a statement today. The group also said that vital institutions such as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission were not explicitly included in the proposed structure, leaving them without this avenue of accountability. G25 also called for amendments to Standing Order 54(1) so that bills are automatically referred to the relevant committee, except in urgent cases. It said committee reports should be debated and voted on in the main chamber rather than in the special chamber, where ministers may not be obliged to respond. The group added that committees should review annual and supplementary budgets, and be empowered to summon witnesses, compel documents, and hold public inquiries when necessary. 'A permanent committee system, if designed with sufficient scope, powers, and resources, has the potential to transform Malaysia's parliamentary culture and strengthen the checks and balances in our institutions. 'This is essential to building Malaysia's democratic maturity,' it said. The Dewan Rakyat passed amendments to several provisions of its Standing Orders on Aug 12 to elevate PSSCs to standing committees, codify parliamentary practices, and improve MPs' ability to conduct House business.
