Olympic equestrian rider Schwizer suspended from Swiss team for financial legal issues

Yahoo4 hours ago
BERN, Switzerland (AP) — Three-time Olympic equestrian rider Pius Schwizer was suspended from the Swiss national team Wednesday while he faces legal issues for alleged financial debts.
The 63-year-old Schwizer competed for Switzerland at the Paris Olympics one year ago in team jumping at Versailles and was in the team that took bronze at the 2008 Beijing Summer Games.
The Swiss equestrian federation cited media reports in recent days of legal matters faced by the rider who was the world No. 1 in jumping in 2010.
'Pius Schwizer's current situation is no longer compatible with the demands necessary to represent Switzerland at the highest level as a Swiss team member,' the federation said, adding he can still compete as an independent individual.
Swiss media reported that police visited Schwizer's farm last week and took away some horses in relation to claims by creditors of unpaid debts.

Basketball at 2028 LA Olympics will start 2 days before opening ceremony, FIBA says

MIES, Switzerland (AP) — Basketball at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will start two days before the opening ceremony for those Games, organizers confirmed Wednesday. FIBA, the sport's global governing body, said that it has reviewed a revised basketball schedule for Los Angeles and that games will begin on July 12, 2028 — ahead of the July 14 opening ceremony. It is unclear if the men's tournament, the women's tournament or both will start before the official opening. A preliminary schedule released last month calls for three basketball games on July 12 and three more on July 13. 'This adjustment allows the quarterfinals to be played over two days and will also ensure that no game will start earlier than (noon), enhancing the overall experience for players, teams, fans and broadcasters,' FIBA said in a news release. Bronze-medal games will be played on July 28 and 29, and gold-medal games will occur on July 29 and 30. July 30 is the final day of the Games. Several other sports also are scheduled to start before the opening ceremony, including field hockey, rugby sevens, water polo, handball, cricket and soccer. The canoe slalom competition in Oklahoma City is expected to start in the morning of July 14, hours before the opening ceremony later that day about 1,200 miles (1,931 km) away. The U.S. is the defending men's and women's Olympic basketball champion. The women have won eight consecutive golds, while the men have won five straight. ___ AP Olympics:

Amanda Knox: Hulu series helped me ‘grieve' life before wrongful conviction

NEW YORK — Hulu's new limited series about Amanda Knox allowed the exonerated American woman to 'finally grieve the young person that I was' before she was wrongfully convicted in Italy for the murder of housemate Meredith Kercher. Knox, 38, was enjoying a semester in Perugia in 2007 at age 20 when she and her boyfriend discovered 21-year-old Kercher brutally murdered in the girls' home. Her arrest — stemming in part from a coerced confession with neither translator nor lawyer present for the interrogation — soon followed, along with sexist media portrayals and the now-infamous 'Foxy Knoxy' moniker. Knox and Monica Lewinsky executive produced the eight-part 'The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox,' which stars Grace Van Patten in the title role. Now a podcaster and criminal justice reform activist, Knox is 'so grateful' to the New York actress for her portrayal in the series, which debuted Wednesday. 'I felt like I could finally grieve the young person that I was,' Knox told People Tuesday at the series' New York premiere. 'Someone recently said that what happened is someone stole my sparkle. They didn't just steal my freedom, they stole my sparkle. And seeing [Van Patten] bring it back again — I'm just so grateful to her, that she's honored that for me.' Knox was convicted in 2009 and sentenced to 26 years behind bars. She was acquitted and freed two years later, only for the Italian courts to overturn the acquittal in 2013, at which point Knox was back in the U.S. The following year, she received a 28 1/2-year prison sentence in absentia, That ruling was overturned in 2015, with Knox finally exonerated. 'That is something that I've struggled with for so long, is how much people have rendered me two-dimensional,' Knox told People, adding that 'Tell Me Lies' actress Van Patten, 28, 'finally honors that young person that I was and the person I am today.'

Milan can close move for Bayer Leverkusen's Victor Boniface tomorrow

Serie A giants Milan can close their move for Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface as early as tomorrow. The Rossoneri made a move for the player earlier today, after having been linked with a host of strikers in the last two weeks. MilanNews report that work is ongoing at Milan to close a deal for Boniface quickly and talks have now advanced quickly with Bayer Leverkusen. Some steps are remaining to finalise the deal and Milan are very confident of signing the player and the move can close as early as tomorrow. Max Allegri's side will sign the Nigerian for an initial loan deal with an option to buy for €30 million. Manchester United's Rasmus Hojlund was initially believed to be a key target but Napoli are making progress for the Dane now, even if Milan had been coming close to signing him over the last week or so.
