China will showcase a large number of new weapons — and demonstrate a revamped military structure — at a major parade in Beijing next month marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
President Xi Jinping will review the troops lining up in formations along Chang'an Avenue during the September 3 parade.
At a news briefing on the parade's preparations, officials said a series of new weapons would be unveiled for the first time — from hypersonic precision-strike missiles to unmanned intelligent equipment operating on land, sea and in the air — along with electronic jamming devices, anti-drone systems, next-generation tanks and carrier-based fighter jets.
Officials said the joint armament formations would be arranged to reflect their roles in real-combat scenarios, as the parade debuts a new structural layout of the armed forces.
Wu Zeke, a senior officer at the Joint Staff Department of the Central Military Commission, added the parade is meant to demonstrate China's national defence capabilities to the world.
'War is like a mirror to show how valuable peace is. We are commemorating to defend peace in this military review. We're demonstrating to the world our national defence capability, to show to the world that the Chinese people cherish peace and are determined to defend the outcomes of the war,' he said.
Xu Guizhong, a senior official at the Political Work Department of the People's Liberation Army Central Theatre Command, said the preparations are being used as a chance to build combat discipline by training command coordination and support capabilities — particularly through high-intensity drills involving new equipment.
He added the parade itself helps to enhance PLA's capacity for joint operations by integrating multiple types of equipment and aircraft into single formations.
'Tens of thousands of people, hundreds of aircraft and hundreds of ground equipment will be mobilised for the parade. To ensure perfect alignment, precise coordination and flawless timing, it is no less than fighting in actual battle,' he said.
Officials said the 70-minute event will feature 45 formations and stressed that it is being organised in a strictly economical, practical and efficient manner to reduce costs.

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrives in Tibet for landmark anniversary
Xi Jinping has arrived in Tibet for events on Thursday to mark the 60th anniversary of the autonomous region, making him the first Chinese president to attend the once-a-decade activities. He arrived in Lhasa at around noon on Wednesday accompanied by Wang Huning, China's top political adviser and fourth-ranking official, and Cai Qi, the president's chief of staff, according to state broadcaster CCTV. The Tibet autonomous region was established in September 1965 and is one of five ethnic minority regions in the country. Yu Zhengsheng, then the fourth-ranking Politburo Standing Committee member, oversaw anniversary events in 2015. Xi is also the only person to visit the region twice while president – his first trip was in 2021 for the 70th anniversary of the People's Liberation Army's entry into Tibet. State news agency Xinhua said Xi's attendance at the anniversary reflected the importance of the region. 'This is the first time in the history of the Communist Party and the country [that Xi has attended the event],' Xinhua said in an article on Wednesday. 'It fully demonstrated the party leadership's high regard for Tibet's work and their sincere care for Tibetan cadres and the masses of all ethnic groups in Tibet.'

White House launches TikTok account as September deadline for platform's ban looms
The White House launched a TikTok account on Tuesday, as President Donald Trump continues to permit the Chinese-owned platform to operate in the United States despite a law requiring its sale. 'America we are BACK! What's up TikTok?' read a caption on the account's first post on the popular video sharing app, a 27-second clip. The account had about 4,500 followers an hour after posting the video. Trump's personal account on TikTok meanwhile has 110.1 million followers, though his last post was on November 5, 2024 — Election Day. TikTok is owned by China-based internet company ByteDance. A federal law requiring TikTok's sale or ban on national security grounds was due to take effect the day before Trump's inauguration on January 20. But the Republican, whose 2024 election campaign relied heavily on social media and who has said he is fond of TikTok, put the ban on pause. In mid-June Trump extended a deadline for the popular video-sharing app by another 90 days to find a non-Chinese buyer or be banned in the United States. That extension is due to expire in mid-September. While Trump had long supported a ban or divestment, he reversed his position and vowed to defend the platform — which boasts almost two billion global users — after coming to believe it helped him win young voters' support in the November election. Trump's official account on X, formerly Twitter, has 108.5 million followers — though his favored social media outlet is Truth Social, which he owns, where he has 10.6 million followers. The official White House accounts on X and Instagram have 2.4 million and 9.3 million followers, respectively.
