Two Limpopo-based police and a cleaner employed by the South African Police Service (SAPS) have been arrested following a joint investigation led by the Limpopo provincial anti-corruption unit.
The three SAPS employees stationed at Modimolle police station have been charged with theft and defeating the ends of justice.
'The arrests stem from an incident that occurred on 14 July 2025, at around 4:20am on the R101 road, approximately 10 kilometres outside Modimolle in the direction of Polokwane. A delivery truck transporting several pallets of washing powder reportedly lost control and veered off the road, causing some of its cargo to spill onto the roadside,' provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.
While the driver attempted to secure the crash scene, several vehicles stopped, and individuals began looting the washing powder.
Shortly after, a marked SAPS vehicle arrived with the two police officers.
'Reports suggest that the complainant pleaded with them to assist in stopping the looting, but instead, the officers allegedly joined in, loading a significant amount of washing powder into the SAPS vehicle before driving off — leaving the driver behind as looting continued,' said Ledwaba.

The driver managed to gather key information about the incident and the identities of those involved.
The matter was swiftly reported, prompting an in-depth investigation.
'On Friday, 18 July 2025, the joint team conducted a search operation, which led to the recovery of some of the stolen items at the residence of one of the police officers. The investigation further linked a third SAPS employee — a general cleaner — to the crime,' said Ledwaba.
All three suspects, aged between 49 and 55, are on Monday scheduled to appear before the Modimolle Magistrate's Court.
Police investigations are still ongoing, and additional arrests are anticipated.
Meanwhile, the provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has condemned the involvement of SAPS employees in criminal activities.
'It is extremely disheartening when those entrusted with upholding the law violate that trust. Corruption and criminal behaviour within the ranks of the SAPS will not be tolerated. We are committed to ensuring accountability at all levels,' she said.
Police in Limpopo have appealed to community members with further information regarding the looting incident to come forward and report to their nearest police station, or via the Crime Stop number 08600 10111.

Inkosi among suspects arrested for DA councillor's murder

THE political killings task team made a new breakthrough today when it arrested two people for the murder of DA councillor, Nhlalayenza Ndlovu, who was shot dead in December 2023 at his home in eMpophomeni, in Howick. THE last days of an eventful month of July are proving to be busy for the KwaZulu-Natal-based political killings task team, which has made another breakthrough in the murder case of a politician. This time around, the task team arrested two men in connection with the murder of a DA councillor from the Midlands. Earlier this week, the task team nabbed the former uMzimkhulu Local Municipality municipal manager, Zweliphansi Sikhosana, for the 2017 murder of former ANC Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa. The latest arrests highlight the relevance and need for the task team despite the directive of Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who is on special leave, to disband it. Sikhosana made a short court appearance at the uMzimkhulu Magistrate's Court, where the matter was postponed to Friday. Earlier this month, on the sixth day of July, on a chilly Sunday afternoon, KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made explosive allegations of political influence to disband the task team and certain politicians and top cops linked to the drug trade and the underworld. Today, the task team arrested two men for the murder of Nhlalayenza Ndlovu, who was the DA's chief whip in uMngeni Local Municipality. Ndlovu was shot dead at his house in eMpophomeni, Howick, in December 2023. The task team netted a 56-year-old Inkosi (traditional leader) and a 26-year-old suspect who is alleged to have coordinated the murder of Ndlovu whilst in Pietermaritzburg Prison. The pair are expected to appear in the Howick Magistrate's Court tomorrow on charges of conspiracy to commit murder, murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The DA councillor was attached to the uMngeni Local Municipality at the time of his murder. The leadership and members of the DA are expected to be present in court to show support to the Ndlovu family. The DA's leader in KZN, Francois Rodgers, said they welcome the arrests. "This matter has been dragging on for some years now. Hopefully, this would bring some finality to both the family of Nhlalayenza and the party itself. Justice delayed is justice denied. "We trust that the prosecuting authority now has its ducks in a row so that we can get to some conclusion and there can be some accountability and consequence in what was a senseless and brutal murder of a public representative in front of his wife and small children. "We once again call on the SAPS and the NPA to ensure that this case is brought to a swift and successful prosecution and that every individual involved in this heinous crime is held accountable to the full extent of the law," said Rodgers.

Another collar for SAPS' political killings task team

The South African Police Service's (SAPS') political killings task team has added more arrests to its long list of achievements. This time, the team has arrested two additional suspects, aged 56 and 26, in connection with the murder of Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Nhlalayenza Ndlovu. Ndlovu, who served as a councillor in the uMngeni Local Municipality, was shot and killed in December 2023 at his home in Mpophomeni, Howick. The 56-year-old has been identified as a traditional healer while the 26-year-old is alleged to have coordinated the councillor's assassination while incarcerated at Pietermaritzburg Prison. They are expected to appear before the Howick Magistrate's Court on Thursday, 31 July. According to police reports, the two will join a pair of previously arrested suspects already charged in connection with Ndlovu's murder. The group faces charges including conspiracy to commit murder, murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Since July 2018, over 130 individuals have been convicted for politically motivated crimes, including the murders and attempted murders of councillors. These convictions have involved both hitmen and those who issued hit orders. Earlier this month, the political task team secured the conviction of former African National Congress (ANC) Youth League leader Sindiso Magaqa's killer to 25 years' imprisonment. President Cyril Ramaphosa recently praised the task team for its 'tremendous work' and urged the Commission of Inquiry to act with urgency following allegations by KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkwanazi. Mkwanazi accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of interfering in police investigations and colluding in efforts to disband the Political Killings Task Team. Mistakes to avoid when applying for a protection order against alleged abusers

The respondent must be served with the order within 24 hours. If it has not been served, then it is not yet active. The court can grant an order for an abusive spouse to continue maintaining their partner despite a protection order against them. This was shared by senior National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) advocates Buyisiwe Nkala and Mzoxolo Rusi, along with senior domestic violence court clerk Qaqamba Tshangela, in their Eastern Cape domestic violence webinar on Wednesday. The officers shared steps to take when applying for a protection order against an abusive close relative and also mistakes for victims to avoid to ensure their order remains in place. According to the South African Police Service (Saps), a protection order aims at preventing the recurrence of domestic violence or sexual harassment by stating what conduct the alleged offender must refrain from doing. ALSO READ: Protection orders and police 'failing victims of GBV' As long as the alleged offender complies with the protection order, the complainant will be safe. If the alleged offender contravenes any stipulation of the protection order, they may be arrested. Once a protection order is granted, it is enforceable throughout the country. What to know about protection orders According to the Saps, to apply for one, the complainant must make an affidavit and complete an application form at their nearest police station. Supporting affidavits by persons who have knowledge of the matter in question may accompany the application. These documents must be handed to the clerk of the nearest court. The court will consider the application immediately. Once the interim has been granted, it goes to the police station, where they will look for the respondent. The respondent must be served with the order within 24 hours. If it has not been served, then it is not yet active, according to Tshangela. Tshangela said the interim protection order will protect you for the period you wait until your trial date. While still waiting for your trial date, if anything happens to you, you can go back to the police with the interim order, and the respondent will be arrested. However, Tshangela cautioned applicants against the mistake of not going back for their trial date once the interim protection order has been granted. ALSO READ: Justice department's poor record-keeping delays protection orders for GBV victims – AG 'Until the magistrate grants you a final order, that's when your protection order application is valid for a lifetime,' she said. 'If you only have the interim and not the final order, it means once your trial date comes and you don't show up, your application will be set aside after two postponements, and you won't have the protection order.' Those who do return for trial are allowed to take no more than three people to accompany them to court. Domestic violence In a situation where your alleged perpetrator is a spouse whom you depend on, the NPA urged victims not to let this stop them from applying for a protection order, as there are systems in place to ensure their upkeep. 'In your application, in the interim order, there is a section that highlights that if this person was maintaining you and now you fear that if you open the case and he will not provide anymore, the magistrate will conduct an inquiry with you that clearly explains that this person was providing for you,' said Tshangela. ALSO READ: Public protector probe confirms inadequate GBV measures by justice department 'It will be a must that he must continue providing whatever he was providing for you. The court can oblige him to continue with the maintenance.' Monetary relief An applicant can also apply for emergency monetary relief – compensation for the things they lost due to their spouse's domestic violence conduct. 'If someone assaulted you to the point of getting admitted to the hospital and you lost your earnings, you can apply for that relief for the person to compensate you,' said Tshangela. 'If you have to relocate because you cannot be under one roof with your perpetrator, they must pay for the relocation. The presiding order decides on the duration of the payment. 'If you are married in community of property and you are being violated, the courts can grant an order that the perpetrator must move out, even if you're both owners of the property. The perpetrator must go.' For those who do not wish to return to their home, they can apply for a place of safety, where they are provided with accommodation. An applicant can also apply for a safety monetary notice, which forces the police to visit and monitor the applicant's safety.
