Two Limpopo-based police and a cleaner employed by the South African Police Service (SAPS) have been arrested following a joint investigation led by the Limpopo provincial anti-corruption unit.
The three SAPS employees stationed at Modimolle police station have been charged with theft and defeating the ends of justice.
'The arrests stem from an incident that occurred on 14 July 2025, at around 4:20am on the R101 road, approximately 10 kilometres outside Modimolle in the direction of Polokwane. A delivery truck transporting several pallets of washing powder reportedly lost control and veered off the road, causing some of its cargo to spill onto the roadside,' provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.
While the driver attempted to secure the crash scene, several vehicles stopped, and individuals began looting the washing powder.
Shortly after, a marked SAPS vehicle arrived with the two police officers.
'Reports suggest that the complainant pleaded with them to assist in stopping the looting, but instead, the officers allegedly joined in, loading a significant amount of washing powder into the SAPS vehicle before driving off — leaving the driver behind as looting continued,' said Ledwaba.

The driver managed to gather key information about the incident and the identities of those involved.
The matter was swiftly reported, prompting an in-depth investigation.
'On Friday, 18 July 2025, the joint team conducted a search operation, which led to the recovery of some of the stolen items at the residence of one of the police officers. The investigation further linked a third SAPS employee — a general cleaner — to the crime,' said Ledwaba.
All three suspects, aged between 49 and 55, are on Monday scheduled to appear before the Modimolle Magistrate's Court.
Police investigations are still ongoing, and additional arrests are anticipated.
Meanwhile, the provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has condemned the involvement of SAPS employees in criminal activities.
'It is extremely disheartening when those entrusted with upholding the law violate that trust. Corruption and criminal behaviour within the ranks of the SAPS will not be tolerated. We are committed to ensuring accountability at all levels,' she said.
Police in Limpopo have appealed to community members with further information regarding the looting incident to come forward and report to their nearest police station, or via the Crime Stop number 08600 10111.

Mpho Mafole murder: Suspect accused of killing Ekurhuleni auditor was out on bail

The 40-year-old man is facing a separate murder charge. The suspect arrested in connection with the murder of Ekurhuleni municipality's senior auditor, Mpho Mafole, was out on bail at the time of the incident. Thabani Goodwill Ntshalintshali, 40, appeared briefly in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on Wednesday following his arrest. He has been linked to Mafole's killing and is facing a charge of murder. It is believed that he and his team were probing a large-scale electricity billing scandal that had allegedly cost the municipality more than R2 billion at the time of his death. A warrant of arrest for a second suspect, identified as Hlanganani Agripper Mncwango, had been issued, according to South African Police Service (Saps). Mpho Mafole murder case: Suspect in court During Wednesday's court proceedings, the state prosecutor revealed that Ntshalintshali has a pending murder case against him. 'No evidence has been led, and the matter has not been set down for trial,' she said. However, Ntshalintshali's lawyer confirmed that the trial in the other case is scheduled to begin on 12 August in the same court. The prosecutor further stated that the state would oppose bail for Ntshalintshali, citing concerns over her potential threat to witnesses. 'The accused is a threat to the community; he has got an outstanding case of murder,' she said, confirming that he is currently out on bail. Phindi Mjonondwane, regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Gauteng, spoke to the media about the accused's prior case. The murder was committed in September 2023. 'The deceased person by the name of Bongani Mfihlo died of gunshot wounds; the accused was arrested and later applied for bail. 'He is currently out on bail of R5 000 in that matter hence the state will oppose his release on bail,' Mjonondwane said on Wednesday. Speaking to the media afterwards, Xhakaza praised law enforcement for making an arrest. '[The employees] are encouraged that the arm of the law is actually working. 'I think at this stage what is important is that we give support to the family and that we also give support to the law enforcement agencies,' he said, adding that 'the mood in the city is quite positive' as a result. The mayor also emphasised that Mafole's murder has been treated as a high-priority matter. 'We did indicate that is an area that we need to improve, and I know that there's been various deployments to ensure that all the guys that are actually involved in the forensic investigations are actually protected. 'It is the time now – we're releasing financials, all the reports to various agencies, to the Auditor-General, and all the necessary support is being provided,' Xhakaza said. Earlier, Mafole's father, Kikilami, told reporters that the family wants to know why his son was killed. The father explained that he had discussed his son's transfer from the Auditor General's office with him. However, Mafole expressed a strong passion for auditing and believed that by moving to Ekurhuleni, he could improve the auditing process for the benefit of the municipality and its residents.

Malalane attorney's fraud case: Failure to secure legal counsel results in another delay

The fraud trial of suspended attorney Zietta Janse van Rensburg was postponed again today (July 23) after she appeared in court without legal representation. The case has faced numerous delays since July last year, several of them due to her failure to secure legal counsel. ALSO READ: Trial postponed again: Zietta Janse van Rensburg returns to court in June Magistrate postpones attorney's fraud case to September Magistrate Jacob Mamabolo asked about her legal representation and who Janse van Rensburg had indicated as her attorney during her previous appearance. She replied that Johannesburg-based attorney Marco Lamberti had been appointed and that his contact details had been shared with the state. 'He has another matter in Randburg but was due to be here today,' Janse van Rensburg explained. Mamabolo's response was to postpone the matter to September 1 – and he instructed Janse van Rensburg to appear with a legal representative. 'Are you aware that at the present moment, you are by yourself?' he asked. Prosecutor says Onderberg attorney sent him WhatsApp messages, emails Before she could respond, state prosecutor Tobie Steyn intervened, questioning the accuracy of her claims. 'Ms Janse van Rensburg is placing certain information on record as if it is the truth,' said Steyn. He went on to say that he had been contacted by Adv Hennie van Rensburg, who had read in a newspaper article that he had supposedly been reinstated as her legal representative. Steyn said the accused then started sending him WhatsApp messages and emails on the matter. He told the court that he had never spoken to Lamberti but confirmed that he was copied on an email. 'But it is not my responsibility to confirm with her lawyer,' he added. He requested that the court reiterate the need for the attorney to appear personally to be placed on record. Complainants will be unhappy about accused talking to state, warns magistrate Mamabolo further instructed Janse van Rensburg not to have direct contact with the prosecutor. 'Only a witness may contact a prosecutor. You are absolutely not allowed to, and it is uncalled for. Should the complainants hear of this, they will not be happy,' he said. In response, Janse van Rensburg told the court she had taken it upon herself to make arrangements to save costs, since Lamberti would otherwise have to appoint a corresponding attorney to attend in his absence. ALSO READ: The Onderberg's Zietta van Rensburg implicated in 'serious misconduct' Mamabolo reminded her that she had the right to apply for Legal Aid, appoint her own lawyer, or represent herself. 'If you want to continue on your own, it's also fine,' he said. Janse van Rensburg confirms Joburg attorney for September court date He then asked her to suggest a date when her attorney would be able to appear in court. Janse van Rensburg said she was in a difficult position and requested permission to step outside and call Lamberti. The magistrate declined to adjourn the matter for this reason, but the prosecutor suggested that the case stand down briefly to give her the opportunity. Janse van Rensburg returned with confirmation that Lamberti would be available on September 1 and said she had already instructed him to represent her. Lamberti is the same attorney who previously withdrew from representing murder accused Sonell Joubert after not receiving payment for his services. Lowvelder attempted to reach Lamberti for comment, but he was unavailable at the time of publication. Read original story on
