Man arrested for killing 13-month-old baby and injuring mother in Mankweng
A 13-month-old baby girl tragically killed in Mankweng after being run over by a pickup van driven by her mother's ex-boyfriend. Image: Supplied A 35-year-old man has been arrested in Mankweng, Limpopo, for allegedly killing a 13-month-old baby girl and severely injuring her mother by deliberately driving over them with a pickup van. The horrific incident occurred on the evening of July 26, around 8.05pm, when the mother and her baby were reportedly waiting for a taxi to Segopye village. Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the suspect, believed to be the woman's ex-boyfriend, approached them and 'started to have a heated argument with her.' Despite the escalating confrontation, a taxi soon arrived and the woman, clutching her child, quickly boarded. However, the drama didn't end there. As they were en route, the taxi driver reportedly warned the mother that a pickup van was following closely behind. When they got off at Marothi (Makwalaneng) Cross, tragedy struck. Tragically, the baby girl later succumbed to her injuries, while the mother sustained significant leg wounds. Police have since registered a case of murder and attempted murder. The suspect appeared in the Mankweng Magistrate's Court on Monday. Ledwaba confirmed that the 'investigation is still ongoing' and urged the public to come forward with any information that might assist the case. IOL News

The Limpopo police arrested a woman accused of torching her ex-boyfriend's house after a failed attempt to confront him, causing damage worth R520 000. A 27-year-old woman appeared before the Phalala Magistrate's Court on Monday facing a charge of arson. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday at Steve Biko, Phase 4, in the Villa Nora policing area, at approximately 5.00am. Failed confrontation Limpopo spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said that, according to reports, the ex-boyfriend was sleeping in his house when the accused knocked at the door. The police were called to the scene, and they opened a case of arson. The South African Police Service initiated its investigation immediately and successfully apprehended the suspect. Fire causes R520 000 worth of damages The police estimate the total damage at R520 000, including all belongings destroyed in the fire. The police investigation is continuing. The 46-year-old officer attached to the Olievenhoutbosch Police Station was arrested for attempted murder and arson in relation to an incident with his girlfriend. The victim was sleeping when the alleged suspect knocked at her door, and he suddenly got angry when the victim did not respond to him. Police officer accused of injuring his girlfriend 'The suspect then set alight the windows' curtains, which resulted in burning the whole two-roomed tin house (shack) and injuring her. The victim was rescued by her neighbours, who summoned the police and ambulance,' Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said. The suspect was traced and arrested the following day. According to the Limpopo police, the woman is accused of setting her ex-boyfriend's house alight following a domestic dispute. The arson attack happened on Friday morning, at around 5am, 25 July 2025, at about 05:00. 'According to the report, the male complainant was sleeping in his house when his ex-girlfriend knocked at the door, and he did not open,' said Limpopo provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba. 'She started breaking the windows. He woke up and sought assistance from the neighbors, and that's when the suspect burned down the house.' Police were called to the scene and opened a case of arson. The police officers immediately commenced investigations, and the woman was successfully apprehended. Police said the total damage caused by the fire is estimated at R520,000, 'including all belongings that were destroyed'. The torched house Image: SAPS At the time, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said officers arrested a 46-year-old man in connection with an alleged arson attack that took place on March 20 at around 9 pm. Mashaba stated that a 36-year-old woman from Homu Village was inside her shack when she allegedly heard her ex-boyfriend threatening to set it on fire. When she opened the door, she saw the suspect standing in her yard, holding a container — believed to contain petrol—and a box of matches. He added that the woman escaped and hid nearby before the suspect could ignite the shack. 'The victim fled the shack and hid nearby. The suspect allegedly proceeded to puncture a JoJo water tank with a sharp object before pouring a flammable substance over the shack and setting it alight.' Emergency services, including police and firefighters, rushed to the scene, but the blaze had already consumed the shack and belongings worth an estimated R20,000. Mashaba also mentioned that charges of arson and malicious damage to property were swiftly filed. 'Cases of arson and malicious property damage were immediately opened, and the suspect, who resides in the same village, was swiftly apprehended.
