‘Voter fraud' allegations: Surjewala accuses Election Commission for ‘lame duck' excuses

The Hindua day ago
Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala has lashed out at the Election Commission of India (ECI), accusing it of hiding "voter fraud" with its "lame duck excuses" when confronted with the evidence of "mass manipulation" of voter rolls.
His remarks came after the Haryana Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) on Saturday (August 9, 2025) asked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to furnish documents within 10 days in support of his claims about anomalies in electoral rolls in the 2024 State Assembly polls.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha on August 7 claimed that the difference between winning and losing the Haryana elections for the Congress was 22,779 votes in the entire State.
On Election Commission fraud claims, BJP accuses Rahul Gandhi of 'selective outrage'
Posting the EC communication to Mr. Gandhi on X, Mr. Surjewala said, "When confronted with evidence of mass manipulation of voter rolls, the Election Commission seeks to hide the 'voter fraud' with its lame duck excuses, puerile legalese and fake technicalities. No wonder that it is now named as 'Election Capture of India' - ECI." He said the "malicious stonewalling and obfuscation" of the Election Commission to address the issue of "vote theft" and hide behind excuses establishes its "fear of truth."
"Not once has the ECI and the BJP said that Rahul ji's assertion of vote theft is wrong," he said. "The EC is not a passive clerk of electoral paperwork. It is a constitutional guardian of the level playing field and free and fair polls, the lifeblood of democracy," Mr. Surjewala said.
"To evade scrutiny in favour of procedural smoke screens is not neutrality. It is an abdication of duty that corrodes the very democracy it is meant to protect," Mr. Surjewala charged.
Elections stolen, alleges Rahul Gandhi; Election Commission of India demands proof 'under oath'
The Congress leader alleged that it is nothing short of a "crime" against democracy and the Constitution and these notices will not dilute the unpardonable "sin" it is committing.
The Haryana CEO's communication to Mr. Gandhi on Sunday (August 10, 2025) stated, "This is to draw your kind attention to this office communication dated August 9, 2025, referring to the statements made by you during the press conference held on August 7, 2025, pertaining to the alleged inclusion of ineligible electors and exclusion of eligible electors in the electoral rolls of Haryana." Mr. Gandhi has been asked to furnish the particulars of the electors concerned, along with the "duly signed declaration/oath under Rule 20(3)(b) of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960.
The Congress leader had cited data from the 2024 Lok Sabha polls to also claim more than one lakh votes were "stolen" through five types of manipulations in an Assembly segment in Karnataka.
With Congress leaders amplifying the "vote theft" allegation of Mr. Gandhi, Election Commission officials on Saturday (August 9, 2025) once again pressed the Leader of the Opposition to either sign a declaration to support his claims or apologise to the country for making "fake" charges.

PM should resign if EC says there are discrepancies in electoral rolls: TMC

Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his cabinet should resign and the Lok Sabha be dissolved if the Election Commission says there are discrepancies in the electoral rolls. Banerjee, who is the national general secretary of TMC and considered the number two in the Mamata Banerjee-led party, said that the "EC cannot selectively say" that the voter list is fine in some states such as Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, but not in West Bengal, Bihar or Tamil Nadu. "If SIR (special intensive revision) of electoral rolls is conducted, it should be held across the country and the first step should be the resignation of the prime minister and his cabinet and the Lok Sabha has to be dissolved," he said. The TMC leader claimed that if the present government has been elected on the basis of the same voter list, then the legitimacy of the central government is null and void. Lok Sabha polls in the country were held in mid-2024. "If the Election Commission is saying that there are discrepancies in the electoral rolls... the Lok Sabha should be dissolved and then SIR be held across the country," Banerjee told reporters at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport here. Banerjee said that based on this voter list, the prime minister was elected and so were more than 240 Lok Sabha MPs of the BJP. "The MPs elected on the basis of this voter list will also elect the country's President and the Vice-President," he said. Banerjee alleged that the BJP has got the SIR done in Bihar since it knows they would lose the assembly elections in the state due later this year if people apply their voting rights. "Rules cannot be different for different states, it should be the same for all states," he said, demanding that SIR be held in all states and not in some "selected states". Rahul Gandhi calls Supreme Court ruling on stray dogs ‘cruel', says ‘voiceless souls are not problem'

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, August 12, slammed the Supreme Court's ruling on stray dogs as 'cruel' and 'shortsighted,' saying the voiceless are not problems to be erased. In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi said the Supreme Court directive to remove all stray dogs was a step back from decades of humane policies on dogs. Rahul Gandhi said, 'The SC's directive to remove all stray dogs from Delhi-NCR is a step back from decades of humane, science-backed policy. These voiceless souls are not 'problems' to be erased.' 'Shelters, sterilisation, vaccination & community care can keep streets safe - without cruelty. Blanket removals are cruel, shortsighted, and strip us of compassion. We can ensure public safety and animal welfare go hand in hand,' the Congress MP said. Earlier, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and noted animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi called the order on stray dogs a 'very strange judgment', coming from someone who 'is in anger'. 'It is not a doable order... This is a very strange judgment given by someone who is in anger. Angry judgments are never sensible,' Maneka Gandhi was quoted as saying by ANI. On Monday, August 11, the Supreme Court has ordered authorities in Delhi to immediately begin removing stray dogs from all localities and relocating them to shelters, with the directive also applying to Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad. The ruling drew criticism from animal rights organisations. They held a protest in front of the India Gate in Delhi on Monday against the order. The police detained them during the protest. The Animal protection organization, PETA India's Advocacy Associate Shaurya Agrawal said the Supreme Court order was 'impractical and illogical' as it is going to 'create chaos and more problems.' He said, 'This particular order is impractical, illogical and according to the animal birth control rules, also illegal. The Delhi government had 24 years to implement these sterilisation programs, implement the ABC rules. Delhi has 10 lakh dogs and only half of them are sterilised. Housing them in shelters is impractical. It is very difficult. This is going to create chaos and more problems.'

Cash-at-home case: Lok Sabha Speaker announces 3-member probe panel on proposal to impeach Justice Yashwant Varma

NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday announced a three-member panel to probe allegations against High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma in the cash-at-home case. The members are, Justice Arvind Kumar of Supreme Court, Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, Chief Justice of Madras High Court Madras and B Vasudeva Acharya (eminent jurist. He is a senior advocate of Karnataka HC) The government had earlier begun the process of the impeachment motion against Allahabad High Court judge Yashwant Varma with over 200 members of Parliament (MPs) across party lines submitted a petition seeking the removal of Justice Varma in the cash-discovery row. A total of 145 Lok Sabha and 63 Rajya Sabha MPs have submitted notices to the presiding officers of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha for the removal of Varma from whose residence here burnt wads of currency notes were found. The signatories to the notice included LoP) Rahul Gandhi, BJP MPs Ravi Shankar Prasad and Anurag Thakur and NCP-SP's Supriya Sule among others. The notice was submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla under Articles 124, 217 and 218 of the Constitution. The Congress party had earlier said that it would back the impeachment notice against Allahabad High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma, following the government's decision to move ahead with the motion. A fire incident at Justice Varma's official residence in Delhi in March, when he was serving at the Delhi High Court, led to the discovery of several burnt sacks of banknotes in the outhouse. Although Justice Varma claimed ignorance about the cash, the Supreme Court-appointed panel indicted him after speaking to multiple witnesses and recording his statement.
