Mother of victim speaks out against former Blount County teacher's sentencing

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — People gathered outside the Blount County Courthouse on Friday to protest with signs, expressing their anger with the outcome of the Joseph Dalton's sentencing.
The former teacher pleaded guilty to five counts of misdemeanor assault by physical contact and was sentenced to six months of probation, with judicial diversion, allowing the charges to be wiped clean once the probation is completed.

Corie Lockett is the mother of a child who she says was victimized by Dalton. She felt it was important to attend this rally.
'Keep pushing. If something has happened to your kid, you don't have to stay silent; you can talk about it,' said Lockett.
Following the incident, Lockett initially transferred her daughter to a different school but realized that a new environment didn't solve the bigger issue. She shared that her daughter didn't fully understand what happened or that anything was wrong.
'There's never a reason for a teacher to restrain you, there's never a reason for them to touch you the way that he touched you. And just letting her know that everything isn't a game. Sometimes, whenever people are acting like they are pretending or playing, that it's not,' Lockett added.

The mother wasn't alone in speaking out; other parents and community members stood beside her, voicing their frustration and demanding change.
'Injustice. I feel like the sentence didn't match the crime. I felt really sad for the victims, and that they must've felt like they did not matter. I feel like it should be on the National Sex Offender Registry. It is very important that Joseph Dalton does not end up at another school with more victims,' shared Danielle Kaylor, a protest organizer.
Lockett said the experience has shown her how important it is for parents to stay alert and talk with their children even when it gets hard.
'People can speak out and protest and do this and do that, but at the end of the day, nothing's going to change if they don't rewrite the laws, if they don't hold the harsher punishment, if they don't start with accountability,' said Lockett.

The Blount County Mayor released a statement earlier this afternoon saying, 'I am doing everything in my power to make sure this never happens to another student in our school system. I am first a parent and grandparent, and I am furious.' Blount County District Attorney General Ryan Desmond declined to comment at this time.

Grandville orthodontist facing federal child exploitation charges

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — An orthodontist who formerly practiced in Grandville is now facing federal child exploitation charges. Thomas Shannon, 43, was arrested in Frankfort, Michigan, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Michigan announced Wednesday. He is charged by criminal complaint with sexual exploitation of a minor, attempted sexual exploitation of a minor, possession of child pornography, receipt of child pornography and attempted receipt of child pornography, according to the attorney's office. According to a criminal complaint filed in federal court Monday, a therapist reported in 2021 that a teenager had been sexually exploited. The victim told police that she had received money in exchange for sending illicit images, the complaint continues, and investigators traced the Snapchat and CashApp accounts to Shannon, who lived in Byron Township. Sex offender, busted in sting but not arrested, snagged again In 2022, amid a Kent County investigation, the complaint says Shannon hired a private forensic investigator to search his phone 'in an attempt to prove that he did not possess any child pornography.' 'The examiner, however, found child pornography and turned it over to police,' the U.S. Attorney's Office wrote in a release. Authorities found evidence that Shannon possessed and received child pornography, according to the complaint. Investigators found that Shannon had communicated with multiple minor victims whom he met online, the complaint alleges. One was just 12 years old. The complaint placed most of the victims out of state. Shannon was in January 2023. But according to the federal complaint, he was released on bond. Investigators found that he was on bond for those charges while communicating with one victim — a 13-year-old — in 2024, the complaint alleges. The state case against Shannon is pending. A status conference in that case has been set for early October. In the federal case, a detention hearing is scheduled for Friday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Humza Yousaf : Tories 'deliberately trying to fuel hatred against asylum seekers'

Humza Yousaf has accused the Tories of 'deliberately trying to fuel hatred' against asylum seekers by presenting them as a threat to women and children. The former First Minister said politicians like Robert Jenrick were 'reviving the old colonial lie that people from the east are somehow dangerous savages'. Mr Jenrick, the shadow justice secretary, has said he supports 'every peaceful protest outside an asylum hotel' and later attended one in Epping, where an asylum seeker was charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl. Demonstrations against asylum seekers staying in hotels have sprung up across the UK, including in Scotland, with those attending claiming they are making their communities less safe. Mr Jenrick, who previously ran for the Tory leadership, said small boat crossings in the English Channel amounted to a 'national security emergency', adding: 'The truth is that mass, uncontrolled immigration has been fuelling crime and made women and girls less safe. ' In a video posted to social media, Mr Yousaf hit back at the Tory claims, saying it was 'predatory men' who posed a danger to women, rather than people from any one group, such as asylum seekers. 'Of course, those who do commit heinous crimes against women, be they asylum seekers or those who have lived in the UK for 10 generations, they should and must feel the full force of the law. 'But when you purposely single out asylum seekers, as the Tories are doing, you're not interested in protecting women, you're deliberately trying to fuel hatred. 'You're reviving the old colonial lie that people from the east are somehow dangerous savages.' The former SNP leader said such rhetoric has turned 'fear into mobs who are ready to set fire to hotels housing asylum seekers', in reference to a riot in Rotherham last year in which a man who attempted to set fire to an asylum hotel. 'It leads to bricks through windows,' he added. 'It leads to fire bombs aimed at vulnerable families who've already fled war and persecution. 'And here's the truth, violence against women is committed by men from every walk of life. 'Blaming asylum seekers doesn't make women safer, it just makes society more divided, more suspicious, more willing to turn on the most vulnerable. 'What the Tories are doing isn't about women's safety, it's about stoking fear. It's the oldest populist trick in the book, let's make sure we don't fall.' A spokesperson for the Scottish Tories said: 'We don't watch Humza Yousaf's videos.'
