Groove to mellow music this weekend at R&B Summer Flea Fest
The inaugural R&B Summer Flea Fest will happen from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at the West Cal Arena & Events Center, 401 Arena Road.
Event coordinator Natasha Donato said the goal is to provide a safe event that can be fun for the whole family. She said she was inspired by an 'R&B in the Park' event hosted in Houston earlier this year.
'It was full of music, food and local talent,' she said. 'I was left thinking, 'We don't have anything like that here.' So I decided to create it. … This is a family-friendly event. It's about enjoying music, food and vibes. Just being together as a community.'
The flea fest will provide musical entertainment with the performances of Jarvis Jacobs and the Gents, Russ G and Leah Nicole, local artists who are known for their soulful R&B sound. Donato said she chose R&B music to bring a 'mellow' sound to the event.
'It's not heavy or rowdy. You can just sit down and enjoy it,' she said.
DJ performance being at 1 p.m. and the live performances start at 6 p.m.
The event will be officially hosted by Erik Tee and Donnie Glyenn.
Beyond music, the event's primary purpose is to spotlight local vendors, some of whom are lesser-known, Donato said.
'A lot of vendors are kind of quiet and nobody really knows about them,' she said. 'This is a chance for me to advertise their business, whether they're selling products or just handing out business cards.'
The festival also includes a car show, a kids' zone with slime bars, bubble stations, face painting, and giveaways of snack packs and hygiene kits.
Food trucks will be on-site.
To accommodate all ages, the event offers free early entry from 10 a.m. to noon, with general admission priced at $15 until 5 p.m. and $25 for the rest of the evening. Children under 3 enter free.
Chairs, fans and blankets will be permitted. No open containers or glass bottles are allowed.

Khalid, 'In Plain Sight' With 'In Plain Sight,' Khalid dumps a cheating boyfriend and wonders how he didn't see it coming. While the singer moves from suspicion to ultimatum — 'If you're the type to sneak around / Just leave the keys on your way out' — the music bounces along, springy synth-pop R&B that barely contains his anger. Dijon, 'Another Baby!' The songwriter and producer Dijon has been a prominent collaborator with Bon Iver and Justin Bieber, abetting their experimental impulses. 'Another Baby!' from his second full-length album, 'Baby,' is just as bold. It's a love song with more than a hint of Prince. Reddit had a delightful reaction to Taylor Swift admitting she reads sourdough forums
On Wednesday night, Taylor Swift made her long-awaited podcasting debut on New Heights alongside boyfriend Travis Kelce. And in the two-plus-hour conversation, the 14-time Grammy winner shed some light on her hobbies post-Eras Tour. It has included a ton of baking — specifically, sourdough. All of the sourdough. And in an astonishingly normal revelation, she admitted that she lurks in the sourdough blogs and forums. As one might expect, there's some crossover in the sourdough community and Taylor Swift fans. So when Swift said that she reads all about sourdough, the subreddit r/Sourdough was pretty pumped to be sharing the same Internet ecosystem as The Taylor Swift. This was how the subreddit reacted: OK, that's so funny. The moderators made an exception to a thread the technically violated community rules (albeit in jest). And allowed everyone to chime in with their best recipes and Taylor Swift-sourdough puns. Maybe she'll share the recipes one day — who knows?
