Report of multiple stolen vehicles results in police chase along I-75 in Monroe County
A police pursuit along Interstate 75, spinning off a report of multiple stolen vehicles, started early Friday in Toledo, Ohio, and continued for over 18 miles into Michigan in and around the City of Monroe.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office relayed the following details in a press release about the stolen vehicles, explaining the route that was taken along the highway and efforts to pick up the suspects.
About 3:14 a.m., Monroe County Central Dispatch gave a report to patrol officers that up to 15 vehicles had just been stolen from an automotive manufacturer in Toledo. Several of those stolen vehicles in pursuit by Toledo Police Department on I-75, they were crossing the state line into Monroe County.
Toledo police continued to pursue the vehicles into Michigan, while Monroe County Sheriff's Office set up along I-75 to assist.
As the pursuit reached Exit 11, which is the LaPlaisance Road exit in Monroe Township, one of the deputies drove onto northbound I-75 and took over as lead vehicle. The main suspect vehicle being pursued at the time was a black 2025 Dodge Durango.
The driver of the Durango "continuously made evasive actions, such as crossing back and forth across all northbound lanes, turning its headlights off at various points, and attempting to 'brake check' pursuing officers," the sheriff's report said.
Upon reaching Exit 15, which is the North Dixie Highway exit in Frenchtown Township, the suspect was able to avoid stop sticks. But he began to slow down as the vehicle appeared to run out of fuel.
Just south of Exit 18, which is the Nadeau Road exit, the vehicle suddenly stopped. The driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, got out and ran off. The suspect was wearing dark clothing and a mask. He jumped the median barrier, crossed into the southbound lanes, and ran into a field on the west side of I-75.
Deputies sent a K-9 and a drone to that location.
A few minutes later, a deputy who was on the perimeter of the search area saw a blue Nissan Rogue stop and pick up a person in the back lot of the Pilot Travel Center at 1200 Nadeau Road, just off the I-75 interchange. Officers realized that one of those people matched the description of the suspect who ran off from the stolen Dodge Durango.
Deputies tried to pull over the Nissan for a traffic stop, but that driver sped off southbound on I-75, leaving the highway at Exit 13, which is Front Street in the City of Monroe. The Nissan quickly got back onto I-75, but this time the vehicle entered the wrong way, driving southbound in the northbound lanes.
This time, stop sticks placed by Monroe Police Department were able to stop the vehicle.
Because of damage from the stop sticks, the driver pulled over. The two males who were inside ran off. Officers tried a K-9 track and drone in an effort to locate the suspects, but they were not found at the time.
The original theft of the Dodge Durango and the other stolen vehicles is being investigated by the Toledo Police Department.
The law enforcement activity in Michigan was led by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, assisted by Monroe Police Department and Michigan State Police.
Deputies ask that anyone with information on the theft and suspects contact the Sheriff's Office Detective Bureau at 734-240-7530.

Bakersfield man accused of killing estranged wife makes first court appearance
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man accused of killing his estranged wife last month at a house in east Bakersfield made his first court appearance Monday, more than a week after he was first scheduled to be arraigned. Rafael Estrada, 44, pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, four counts of willful cruelty to a child, spousal abuse, allowing or causing injury to an elder or dependent adult, recklessly evading a peace officer, driving a vehicle in the opposite direction of traffic and resisting arrest. Several prior arraignment dates were postponed. No reason for the postponements was given in court. Court Commissioner Samantha Allen ordered Estrada held without bail. His next hearing is scheduled June 20. Around 8:30 p.m. on May 28, deputies were called to a house in the 2400 block of Monterey Street to reports that a man had seriously injured his wife. They arrived and found Taylor Danay Dominguez Estrada, 32, with 'severe trauma,' according to sheriff's officials. She was declared dead at the scene. Family members have told 17 News that Rafael Estrada showed up to a party uninvited and slit his wife's throat in front of at least one child. Rafael Estrada was spotted by sheriff's helicopter driving away in a white truck before deputies arrived, officials said. Deputies located and chased the pickup until the pursuit ended about 10 miles away in the 9900 block of Ramos Avenue. Officials said a K-9 was used to take Estrada into custody. Charges filed in hit-and-run crash that killed Milwaukee grandmother
The family of Beverly Fair has waited nearly a half year for some semblance of justice. The 70-year-old grandmother was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Milwaukee in January. Donte Miller, 30, of Milwaukee, was charged June 6 with seven counts related to the crash that killed Fair, including second-degree reckless homicide and hit-and-run involving death. His bail was set at $150,000 June 6 and a competency exam was ordered. Miller had an active warrant for his arrest since June 2023 after repeatedly fleeing police, according to prosecutors. Miller has been in custody since March when he was arrested on separate charges. The district attorney's office said it was waiting on lab results related to the crash that killed Fair. According to a criminal complaint, on Jan. 4, Milwaukee police officers attempted to pull over Miller near North 35th and West Vine streets in his BMW after observing no front license plate on the vehicle. Miller began to increase his speed and disregard a stop sign so officers activated their lights and sirens and attempted to catch up, the complaint said. Due to a slight incline in the road, officers temporarily lost sight of the BMW. Once at the top of the incline, officers observed the BMW had crashed into a Dodge Durango at the intersection of North 34th and West Lloyd streets. According to the complaint, the driver's door to the BMW was open, but the other doors were closed, while inside the Durango was Fair, and her 21-year-old grandson, Jordan Fair. Jordan Fair, who was driving, suffered pain and bruising to his chest area, while Beverly Fair died from her injuries. The Minnesota plate on Miller's BMW did not match the vehicle, but the VIN number did register to Miller, who was being sought after fleeing police in October 2023, according to the complaint. Officers recovered Miller's cellphone in the BMW, and it was later determined by a lab that there is "very strong support" that Miller's DNA is inside the vehicle, the complaint said. Officers responded to Miller's apartment later that night, but he had left the premises by then. The crash occurred just 1.2 miles away from his home and it was later determined by surveillance video that Miller walk or ran to his apartment before being let into the building by someone, according to the complaint. Miller did not have a valid license at the time of the crash and the conditions of his bail from his open felony case were to not commit any new crimes or drive without a valid driver's license. Miller was initially arrested in December 2022 for fleeing police and released from custody six days later after posting $2,000 bail. He failed to appear for his preliminary hearing in June 2023 and an arrest warrant was issued. He was arrested again in March 2025 and has since been in custody. Miller faces decades behind bars. His attorney, Michael Cerniglia, said at the June 6 hearing that Miller refuses to talk to him and show up for court, so Cerniglia wants to raise concerns about his competency. The early January crash that killed Fair happened just days after the holiday season, which Fair always looked forward to as a chance to feed her family a big meal, her daughter Shyla Deacon previously told the Journal Sentinel. Deacon couldn't immediately be reached for comment on June 9. Fair left behind a husband, Charles, five children and 12 grandchildren. "She was my dad's queen. She was our queen," Deacon said. "She did everything in excellence. Everything from the way she dressed, to the way she did her makeup, to the food that she cooked, everything was done in excellence. She was the best of all of us."
