Why Man Utd fans cancelled planned protest before Arsenal game

Independent5 days ago
A Manchester United supporters' group, The 1958, has postponed a planned protest against the club's ownership.
The demonstration was initially organised for 17 August, ahead of United's opening Premier League match against Arsenal, targeting minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
The 1958, known for previous protests against the Glazer family, extended their frustration to Ratcliffe over his operational changes and perceived collaboration with the Glazers.
The group stated that Ratcliffe, who acquired a 28.94 per cent stake and took operational control in February 2024, was "no saviour" and "helping keep them in charge."
The postponement followed a survey revealing a split in fan opinion, with the group deciding it was irresponsible to risk internal conflict among supporters.

Man Utd vs Arsenal: Predicted lineup today and confirmed team news

Manchester United and Arsenal collide in what could be another classic on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season. It is building up to be a striker showdown at Old Trafford on Sunday with both sides investing heavily in a new centre forward this summer. Arsenal parted with £64million to prise Viktor Gyokeres away from Sporting CP having walked away from talks to sign Benjamin Sesko, who was thought to be the club's leading target earlier in the summer. It allowed United to enter the fray, winning the race to sign Sesko who turned down a move lucrative move to Newcastle United to seal his move to Old Trafford. Arsenal fans have already got a glimpse of their new no14, featuring in pre-season games against Tottenham, Villarreal and Athletic Club. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. While Kai Havertz has provided a good account of himself this summer having recovered from a hamstring injury, Gyokeres will surely be given the nod on Sunday. Sesko is still to play for his new club, only joining training on Wednesday following his £73m move from RB Leipzig. Ruben Amorim told reporters on Friday however his new leading man is physically ready to come straight into the side and will be tempted to name him in his starting XI. Andre Onana is available after recovering from the hamstring injury he suffered in pre-season, as is Joshua Zirkzee. Noussair Mazraoui has not featured since picking up a knock in United's first pre-season match against Leeds and is unavailable today along with Lisandro Martinez. Arsenal meanwhile have a relatively clean bill of health with Leandro Trossard expected to be available after picking up a minor knock in the win over Athletic Bilbao. Riccardo Calafiori and Havertz both featured in that game after shaking off knocks but Gabriel Jesus remains sidelined. We are backing Sesko to get the nod up front but Matheus Cunha or Bryan Mbeumo could also be handed a role through the middle, allowing Bruno Fernandes to take up a more advanced role. Arsenal's new starting XI pretty much picks itself – Noni Madueke will hope to force himself into the starting XI but Arteta may keep faith in Gabriel Martinelli for now. United vs Arsenal takes centre stage on Sunday 17 August with kick-off scheduled for 4:30pm. Ryan Reynolds says he and Rob McElhenney don't make Wrexham ‘football decisions'

Ryan Reynolds says he and fellow Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney do not make any 'football decisions' at the Championship club. Wrexham have had a meteoric rise under their Hollywood owners, becoming the first team in the history of English football's top five divisions to secure three successive promotions. Reynolds and McElhenney were at the SToK Cae Ras on Saturday to watch Wrexham play their first home game in the second tier of English football since May 1982. But there was no Hollywood ending as West Brom won 3-2 to leave the Red Dragons without a Championship point after two games. 'We have a very hands-off management style,' Deadpool star Reynolds told Sky Sports. 'Our job is to listen, learn, and tell the story. And that's I think a great position for any ownership group to be in, to really just be there to support and tell the story. 'We don't make football decisions. And it's actually the great gift of that is that we're able to have relationships with the players at Wrexham, whereas most people in our position can't. 'So we have a relationship with every single one of our players.' The Welsh club's commercial success – fuelled by Reynolds and McElhenney's celebrity status and the award-winning 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary series – has allowed them to invest heavily in Phil Parkinson's squad with nine summer signings. Wrexham have broken their transfer record three times this summer and Wales striker Nathan Broadhead, signed from Ipswich in a deal worth up to £10million, made his debut against West Brom. McElhenney said: 'It's interesting to get accolades when you hear people say, 'Oh, you guys have done a pretty good job with the club. 'The truth is we don't really have anything to do with what happens out on the pitch. 'We've got our very specific job, which is to be clowns and to tell the story as best we can. 'But also to be as respectful as we possibly can to what Phil does on the pitch and what the executive team, Michael (Williamson) and Shaun (Harvey) and Humphrey (Ker) and everybody does off the pitch. 'We just have an incredible team and we just get to sit back and be fans and document the process.'

Nottingham Forest is ‘perfect place to be' – new signing Omari Hutchinson

Omari Hutchinson admitted Nottingham Forest was the 'perfect place to be' after he signed a five-year deal with the club. Nuno Espirito Santo secured his fifth and sixth signings of the summer transfer window on Saturday after both Hutchinson and James McAtee committed to long-term contracts at the City Ground. Hutchinson was part of the side that won the European Championship with the England Under-21 side this summer and he will be reunited with fellow winning team-mates McAtee and Elliot Anderson in Nottingham. The 21-year-old admitted Anderson convinced him to join the club after spending two years at Ipswich. He told Forest TV: 'It's been a long and difficult few weeks. I'm really excited to be here and just can't wait to get started. 'I know a lot of players here. They told me how good it is and how well I'll progress as a player. It's just the perfect place to be. 'I was just doing pre-season with my brother. I get a message from him (Anderson) and he's telling me to come and I said, 'Listen, I'll try my best', but yeah, he convinced me to come.' England Under-21 captain McAtee enjoyed a couple of loan spells away from Manchester City with Sheffield United but has decided to make a permanent switch to Forest for a fee believed to be around £30million and like Hutchinson, he also signed a deal till 2030. The 22-year-old made 27 appearances for City in all competitions last campaign and thought now was the right time for a new challenge. He said: 'I think I'm ready for a new challenge. I'll try and get some more game time and try and show the world what I can do. 'I can't wait (for the Europa League). It's something that I'm looking forward to and I'm excited to play in there.'
