Nilesh Shah on how to treat smallcaps and midcaps right now

, MD & CEO,
Envision Capital
, says despite concerns about the recent surge in midcap and
smallcap stocks
, the long-term outlook remains positive. Sustained economic growth of 6-7% in real terms and 10% nominally, coupled with a rise in per capita income from $3,000 to $9,000-$10,000 over the next 10-15 years, will fuel the growth of mid- to small-sized companies.
India will always be a small and midcaps market, it always has been. Yes, largecaps should be part of your core portfolio, but the big gains are always made when you catch them young and see them grow. What is your thought on how small and midcap should be treated right now and should you really be looking at that broad umbrella classification or is it really about stock picking within small and midcaps.
Nilesh Shah:
Stock picking is pretty much almost like eternal truth in the sense that stock picking is relevant for any investor, any fund manager, any CIO irrespective of whether it is largecap, midcap, or smallcap. The wonderful part about mid and smallcaps, at least for India, is that many years ago, many midcap and smallcap companies came out with IPOs prematurely because interest rates were high, and borrowing from banks or NBFCs was expensive. Also, the VC and the private equity system was not fully evolved as it is evolved today.

So, a lot of companies just thought that going to the market was the best way to derisk the balance sheet and raise capital. In the process, what we have now is a universe of almost 4,000 to 5,000 companies which are publicly listed, of which we could probably classify under 200 as largecaps, maybe another 200 as midcaps; but the rest is all smallcap and microcap. So, to that extent, what we all have is the benefit of a very large universe.
The second thing and it is very important that while in between, all of us keep saying that midcaps and smallcaps have run up, it looks a little risky, but I clearly have the big picture in mind that as long as we keep growing at this 6-7% in real terms and 10% in nominal terms and till we do not get to a stage where from $3,000 per capita, we move to about $9,000 to $10,000 per capita, essentially it will be an environment where mid to small sized companies will continue to do well and continue to grow at a faster pace versus the big or the large stocks.
So, clearly the universe is very large and secondly, there is longevity to this opportunity that we are not going to go from $3,000 to $10,000 per capita in the next two or five years, and this is going to be maybe a journey over the next 10-15 years. Clearly, this is an opportunity for the next 10-15 years. So, even if there are these corrections of 5%, 10%, 15% or 20%, I do not think it should worry us as long as we have the very long-term and the big picture in mind.

The last two-three years and especially last year, has been one of the largest public listing years for us. Even today, a smallcap is more of a timing kind of a product when to get in, and get out. The number of listings in the mid and smallcaps have only started increasing. Listing now is no longer premature like it used to be earlier and for a fund manager, a need for a buy and hold from an investment perspective for the next 10 years augurs well instead of trying to look at it from an in-out strategy. What is your view?
Nilesh Shah
: That is a great point and yes, surely, timing does help. But when we talk about the most recent IPOs and by that I mean the IPOs which have come out over the last one year, two years, or maybe even over the last three to four years, in the post covid era. They offer a very interesting opportunity set around
digitalisation
. Prior to that, when we in India used to talk about technology, we would talk about technology services companies or at best a handful of technology product companies.
But what we have seen over the last maybe three to four years is pretty much a flood of companies which have used technology to reach out to customers and offer them products and services and thereby basically significantly improve their go-to market strategy, achieving what probably earlier would have taken them a lot more time.
Clearly, we are going to see a new set of opportunities and I believe that the opportunity for digitisation or digitalisation using technology to reach out to consumers, to reach out to businesses, according to me, is phenomenally huge and as an area to really kind of pick and invest into. So, the mid and the smallcap space will continue to keep getting more diverse and continue to keep getting more enriching, thanks to IPOs.
While some of these IPOs have come in at relatively mature valuations, even post the IPOs, a lot of these companies have continued to grow and we have seen this over the last four years – be it an online broking platform, an online insurance platform or an online payments platform or an online food delivery and a quick commerce platform, all of these businesses have essentially kind of grown quite significantly, number one.

Number two, post their IPO, a few of them did correct quite significantly. But if investors have done their homework well enough, those corrections have only created an opportunity to give a fresh entry or to even buy more into it and then be able to essentially ride it. I clearly believe that now the IPO valuations are not as cheap as what used to be many years ago, but they keep giving you opportunities even in the post IPO stage.

With new energy, JSW Group gets ready to disrupt EV market

New Delhi: Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group has set up a dedicated automotive vertical-JSW Motors. This will be an umbrella platform under which the group will launch passenger cars focussed on new energy vehicles at an investment of up to $3 billion over the next five years with launches set to begin in the second half of FY26. It will be separate from the group's joint venture with China's SAIC, JSW MG Motor India. JSW Motors is in talks with three-four companies across Italy, Germany, South Korea and China for collaborations to design and develop these cars, which will be sold under the JSW brand, newly appointed chief executive officer Ranjan Nayak told ET in his first media interview. All vehicles will be made in India, with the earmarked resources deployed for commissioning the manufacturing facility, research and development. Elaborating on the expansion strategy, Nayak said JSW Motors is aiming to disrupt the domestic electric vehicle (EV) market by manufacturing "world class automotive products in the country" by leveraging the best technologies from across the globe, including Italy, Germany, South Korea and China, and combining that with India's own strengths in robust supply chain and digital integration. "We are looking at rapidly scaling up our in-house automotive technology, and not remain dependent on any external entity. Our integrated approach allows us to combine global excellence with local relevance, ensuring high performance, affordability and sustainability," Nayak said, adding, "Our first New Energy Vehicle (NEV) under the JSW badge will hit the roads in the second half of FY2026." Nayak said JSW Motors is drawing on "the unique strengths of industry-leading partners" from around the world, without specifying details of the companies it is collaborating with. "We will be combining the craftsmanship and aesthetics of Italian designers and the German precision in manufacturing and engineering with the advanced welding technologies from South Korea and China's expertise in electric propulsion systems, battery innovation and New Energy Vehicle (NEV) technologies with that of the Indian IT sector's deep capabilities in software and digital integration," said Nayak. He declined to share details of the investments the JSW Group has scheduled for its automotive venture. However, industry sources said the group has lined up an investment to the tune of $2-3 billion in its automotive business over the next five years. Similar to its strategy in the steel sector, JSW intends to "energize the auto ecosystem-spurring suppliers and competitors to rise with us" to accelerate India's shift to clean mobility and reduce its dependence on oil, said Nayak, who is also executive vice president and head, corporate strategy, JSW Group. "Our aim is to push New Energy Vehicle penetration to 50%, offering affordable, world-class electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid vehicles," he said. Nayak said China is at the forefront of EV and hybrid vehicle innovation and has become an integral part of the global automotive supply chain. As the world rapidly shifts toward sustainable mobility, technologies such as Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), pioneered by Chinese automakers, are redefining the industry landscape. By combining the best global technologies with India's own strengths, JSW Motors intends to bring high-quality, technologically advanced, energy efficient and environmentally responsible vehicles. This approach will deliver "unmatched value to Indian customers and propel the country towards a more secure, sustainable and self-reliant automotive future," he said. "Like global industry leaders-including those from Europe, America (like Tesla and GM), and Japan-we embrace relevant advancements from China and other innovation hubs, integrating them within India's ecosystem. Promoting EV, PHEV and hybrid technologies is also critical from an energy security standpoint." he said.

Supertech homebuyers seek CJI, PM intervention to let NBCC complete projects

Homebuyers of 16 stalled housing projects by Supertech have written to Chief Justice of India B R Gavai and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking their intervention to hand over these projects to state-owned NBCC instead of NCR-based Apex Group. The homebuyers called for vacating a stay imposed by the top court on a National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) order in December 2024, directing that all these projects be entrusted to NBCC (India) Ltd for time-bound completion. 'After enduring over a decade of financial loss, mental trauma, and shattered dreams, we now face the imminent threat of being handed over once again to a private entity — Apex Heights Pvt Ltd — whose proposal and compliance affidavit submitted to the SC is fundamentally flawed, financially unviable, ethically questionable, and devastating for homebuyers,' they said in the letter. The 16 stuck projects of Supertech comprise 50,962 homes, of which 39,870 are sold and 11,092 remain unsold. Of the sold homes, 24,871 have been handed over to buyers, while 14,999 are yet to be delivered. Live Events An investment of Rs 1,700 crore is required to complete the sold homes, while receivables from these units are estimated at Rs 2,200 crore. 'NBCC has delivered large-scale, complex stalled housing projects such as Amrapali. It has the technical expertise, government backing, operational credibility, and most importantly — the trust of homebuyers,' said Mujeebur Rahman, a homebuyer. The buyers have also demanded the disqualification of Apex from the resolution process and the complete removal of Supertech promoters from it. 'We have requested the Supreme Court that no further interlocutory applications (IA) be entertained at this advanced stage of the proceedings. It has already been 15 long years, and more than 50,000 homebuyers are still waiting for their homes, having suffered immense financial and mental distress,' Rahman said. Homebuyers have alleged that Supertech is attempting to block NBCC's onboarding by pushing the Apex proposal. Supertech, however, said once the Supreme Court approves the resolution plan submitted by Apex Heights, it will pave the way for all stakeholders to complete the 16 projects, with deliveries to homebuyers starting within three months and being completed in the next 24 months, in addition to repayment to financial institutions and land authorities as agreed in the plan. 'Since the de-linking of the Doon Square Project in reverse insolvency, the handover of units has been done by Ametek, the codeveloper in the project, well before the time stipulated. NCLAT had directed delivery in 12 months, whereas 100% handover of units to homebuyers has been successfully completed in nine months,' Supertech said in a statement. Apex Group has agreed to clear Rs 678 crore of dues to five banks and around Rs 1,900 crore to Noida, Greater Noida, and Yamuna authorities. In the initial phase, the company has committed to invest Rs 500 crore, with plans to deliver the flats within two years of taking over. Economic Times WhatsApp channel )

Gold price prediction: Analysts forecast gold rates for August

Gold price was down throughout the previous week as gold rate was down by over one per cent to $3,335.60. Gold will also face tough challenges from developments related to the August 1 trade deal deadline. August 1 marks the end of the suspension period of Trump tariffs imposed on dozens of countries, including India. Gold Rate to Remain Low On the global front, Comex gold futures for August delivery slipped by USD 37.90 or 1.12 per cent to close at USD 3,335.60 per ounce in New York. Gold may stay weak as hopes of more trade deals or tariff delays before the August 1 deadline, Ramaswamy stated. Safe haven demand seems to have vanished and has lifted the US stocks and Treasury yields, buoyed by strong AI-linked corporate earnings and risk-on appetite. The next move in gold will depend on whether the US Fed signals a more dovish stance or if tensions flare again on the tariff front, he said. Live Events Ramaswamy added that a possible resumption of Chinese central bank gold buying could offer support later in 2025, but for now, the market may remain in a phase of consolidation. When will Gold Price Rise? Gold prices may see some consolidation in the week ahead as the focus will be on the outcome of trade negotiations between the US-Euro zone and the US-China along the policy meeting of the US Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan, both of them expected to keep interest rates on hold. However, their official commentary will be closely watched, Pranav Mer, Vice President, EBG - Commodity & Currency Research, JM Financial Services, said. Gold prices have had a good ride in July; however, the correction was driven by lower safe-haven demand and expectations of a breakthrough in trade deals, Prathamesh Mallya, DVP - Research, Non-Agri Commodities and Currencies at Angel One, said. Mallya expects that precious metal prices to remain under pressure and added that the US GDP data will also play a critical role in shaping gold's trajectory in the short term. FAQs Q1. What is the current gold price? A1. Globally, spot gold is trading around $3,348–$3,350 per ounce, well above the $3,300 mark reached earlier in July. Analysts noted record highs of about $3,500 per ounce in April, with sustained demand from investors and central banks pushing prices higher. Q2. What are experts forecasting for gold prices in 2025? A2. HSBC has revised its 2025 average forecast upward to $3,215/oz (up from $3,015), with a year-end projection of $3,175/oz and a 2026 forecast of $3,025/oz. It anticipates gold trading between $3,100 and $3,600/oz for the rest of the year. Other institutions offer similarly bullish targets: Citi sees $3,000/oz, Goldman Sachs targets $3,100/oz, and UBS projects $3,200/oz in 2025. Some long-range forecasts even suggest $4,000/oz by mid-2026 if current geopolitical and economic stresses persist.
