Slow drivers warned of 'black death' risk

Yahoo9 hours ago
Drivers are being urged to take better care of their engines – and it could be as simple as heading down the motorway now and then. Experts at car repair finance firm Bumper have warned that cautious, slow driving habits may actually be doing more harm than good.
They say it can increase the risk of engine damage caused by carbon build-up – often referred to by mechanics as 'black death.' Most motorists try to protect their cars by driving gently around town, but this can unintentionally lead to long-term problems.
One of the biggest risks is the accumulation of carbon deposits, which clog internal components, reduce fuel efficiency, and can eventually lead to engine failure.
'If you're constantly driving at low speeds – especially for short journeys – your engine never gets hot enough to burn off carbon deposits,' explained a spokesperson for Bumper.
'Over time, this can lead to a build-up inside your valves, pistons and exhaust system.'
Known as 'black death' because of its thick, dark appearance, the deposits are a by-product of unburnt fuel and poor engine circulation. Left unchecked, they can harden and cause serious damage.
'In the worst-case scenario, carbon build-up can cause your engine to seize – and replacing that could cost thousands,' warns Bumper.
But there's a simple solution – and it doesn't cost a penny.
'Modern engines are designed to be run at higher speeds from time to time," the spokesman said.
"Taking your car for a steady drive on the motorway helps heat the engine fully and allows fuel to clean and lubricate components."
Petrol, when forced through the system at higher pressure, can act as a natural solvent – cleaning valves and piston rings as it goes.
Another warning sign to look out for is white foam or froth under the oil cap, which could indicate water condensation in the engine oil, often caused by short trips where the engine doesn't heat up properly.
'If you take your oil cap off and notice a milky substance, that's usually a sign your engine isn't getting hot enough to burn off moisture,' the spokesman for Bumper said.
'It's not necessarily a serious fault, but it can lead to long-term problems if ignored.'
Again, a regular long-distance drive at a steady speed can resolve the issue.
The spokesman added: 'When you drive at motorway speed for 45 minutes to an hour, the heat generated by the engine is enough to evaporate condensation and prevent that build-up.
'We know unexpected engine repairs can be financially stressful, which is why Bumper helps drivers spread the cost with interest-free payments.
'But the best approach is prevention – and in this case, it really can be as simple as giving your car a proper run every now and then.'

M5 drivers met with huge building in West Midlands

Drivers travelling along the M5 in the West Midlands have been met by a huge building next to the carriageway. Over the past two years, motorists will have noticed the energy-from-waste-facility rising from the ground in West Bromwich. The £400million plant is an imposing structure for drivers travelling along the bend of the motorway just south of Junction 1. READ MORE: The M5 junction hiding a secret passage that was once part of something much grander Get breaking news on BirminghamLive WhatsApp, click the link to join Although it appears to be just metres from the M5 itself, the facility is actually located off the nearby A4182 Kelvin Way. Motorists driving past on the M5 will have noticed workers in high-vis clothing working at height on the giant building. Work on the plant began back in June 2021 and Sandwell Council says it should be completed by December 2025. The facility will convert 395,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste destined for landfill or export into 44MW home-grown energy every year. More than 400 jobs are set to be created during construction of the facility, which will be operated by enfinium, while there will be more than 40 full-time jobs once operational. The plant, which is called enfinium Kelvin, will be able to generate enough electricity to power more than 95,000 homes. A spokesperson for Sandwell Council said: "enfinium Kelvin is an energy from waste facility currently under construction. "The facility will divert 395,000 tonnes of non-recyclable household and business waste that would have otherwise been sent to landfill or export. "enfinium Kelvin will use the residual waste to generate 44MW (gross) of partially renewable baseload energy per annum, equivalent to the needs of more than 95,000 UK homes and businesses."

Motorists could face delays throughout August as roadworks get underway tomorrow

Motorists could face disruption as a £150k scheme to resurface a Prestwich road gets underway tomorrow. Heys Road, Prestwich, forms part of Bury Council's £30m highways programme to repair roads throughout the borough. Work will take place until August 29 from 8am to 5pm, and will cost £152K. Traffic management will be place and there will be limited access during the works. Highways bosses say the work has been planned during the school holidays to reduce disruption. READ MORE: Radcliffe road closures taking place for resurfacing works Bury road closures and restrictions over the next two weeks Whitefield roadworks in place to install new pedestrian crossing Town hall chiefs say that with limited funding they are doing the "best we can to keep the roads in good repair and make them better for everyone". The council has borrowed £30 million over nine years (2017-2026) to significantly increase and supplement funding for resurfacing, surface treatments and day-to-day maintenance of all highway assets. This additional funding has led to a phased, nine-year highway investment strategy and adopt a 'prevention' is better than 'cure' approach. As a result, the percentage of A, B and C roads ranked as good has risen by 4.7 per cent and the percentage of the unclassified network ranked as good has risen by 6 per cent.

Porsche Says the 911 Turbo S Is Coming Soon and the Gas-Fed Macan Will Get a Successor in 2028

In its first-half earnings call, Porsche confirmed that a new will be shown later this year with a hybrid powertrain. The electric motor in the 911 GTS T-Hybrid is good for a continuous 54 horsepower, meaning the new Turbo S could come close to 700 hp. Porsche also said a new gas-powered compact SUV will arrive by 2028 as a successor to the outgoing . Porsche launched its electric Macan SUV last fall before introducing a refreshed version of its Taycan EV—which just won Car and Driver's EV of the Year award for 2025—this summer. But Porsche isn't abandoning its lineup of gas-powered cars, and in its first-half earnings report, the German automaker made two announcements about exciting upcoming internal-combustion vehicles: the updated 911 Turbo and a future fuel-sipping SUV that will replace the outgoing gas Macan SUV. A Potentially 700-HP Turbo S Porsche has already updated the majority of the expansive 911 lineup, including inserting a new hybrid powertrain into the GTS trim. Even the track-focused GT3 received some light tweaks for 2025, leaving the Turbo and Turbo S as the only models that carried over into 2025 unchanged. But on Porsche's earnings call, CEO Oliver Blume confirmed that the new Turbo S will be revealed later this year and will pack a hybrid powertrain of its own. We expect it to be joined by a non-S model too. The hybrid powertrain should make the new Turbo S even more rapid than before. The twin-turbocharged 3.7-liter flat-six in the current Turbo produces 572 horsepower, with the Turbo S upping the ante to 640 ponies. The T-Hybrid system in the GTS added an electric turbocharger and an electric motor that injects an extra 54 hp and 110 pound-feet of torque, bringing combined output to 532 hp. This means a hybridized Turbo S could be cranking out close to 700 hp. There will, however, likely be a weight penalty of roughly 100 pounds, if the GTS is any indication. A New Compact Crossover Although the gas-powered Macan, originally introduced way back in 2015, remains on sale for the time being in the United States, it is effectively being replaced by the Macan EV. Over in Europe, the internal-combustion Macan has already been pulled off the market due to regulatory reasons. But now Porsche has confirmed that its compact SUV will have a successor with a gas engine. Back in March, Porsche said it was considering a new gas-powered SUV, and now Blume has announced that this upcoming crossover will arrive in 2028. According to Blume, it will be differentiated from the Macan EV, and we think it could introduce a new nameplate. While 2028 doesn't give Porsche too much time to develop this new model, we expect it to ride on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) that underpins the new 2025 Audi Q5, allowing Porsche to get the SUV to market more quickly. This wouldn't be a surprise, since the current gas Macan shares its platform with the previous-generation Q5. The new Q5 uses a 268-hp turbocharged four-cylinder, while the SQ5 uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that makes 362 hp. Both engines could find their way into the Macan successor. In the earnings call, Blume also confirmed that electric successors to the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman are still coming but have been delayed. They will now go on sale after the Cayenne EV, which will be revealed later this year before sales start in 2026. This means the 718 EV will likely reach dealerships in 2027.
