NEW DELHI: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the 'One Nation, One Poll' initiative is scheduled to meet on July 11, 2025, at the Parliament House Annexe in New Delhi.
The panel, headed by BJP MP PP Chaudhary, will hold consultations with legal experts and former officials as part of its ongoing deliberations on the proposed constitutional reforms, reported news agency ANI.
The meeting is a part of the broader exercise to examine the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which aim to enable simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
The committee's next phase involves seeking feedback from legal and institutional stakeholders to refine its recommendations.
The proposed legislation, introduced in the Lok Sabha in December 2024, would allow the President to issue a notification on the date of the first sitting of the Lok Sabha, likely in 2029, to fix the schedule for future simultaneous elections.
Under the plan, assemblies elected after 2029 would have terms ending with the five-year term of that Lok Sabha, aligning all future polls by 2034.
PP Chaudhary has earlier stated that assemblies elected in 2032, including Uttar Pradesh's, may have shortened tenures to match the national cycle. 'Tenures of assemblies may be reduced to two or three years to ensure that all elections are held together in 2034,' Chaudhary had explained.

The 39-member committee includes 27 Lok Sabha MPs and 12 Rajya Sabha MPs, with representation from across the political spectrum. Notable members include BJP's Anurag Thakur and Bansuri Swaraj, Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Manish Tewari, and NCP's Supriya Sule.
The committee has so far visited Maharashtra and Uttarakhand, with plans to tour more states and Union Territories before finalising its report.
The government has maintained that holding simultaneous elections will streamline governance, reduce the frequency and cost of polls, and minimise policy paralysis caused by the Model Code of Conduct. However, critics, including several opposition parties, have flagged concerns over its impact on India's federal structure and the autonomy of state governments.
The July 11 meeting is expected to offer further clarity on the legal and logistical roadmap for implementing the 'One Nation, One Election' framework, a key priority of the Modi government.

Caught In A 'Mayor's Nest'? Here's Why Zohran Mamdani Is Courting Controversy
Last Updated: While Mamdani has long positioned himself as a progressive voice, critics say some of his statements cross the line from dissent to disinformation and bigotry Ever since he delivered a stunning upset by drawing enough votes to emerge as the likely mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani has been trending on social media. So much so that the 33-year-old Democratic socialist's win in the mayoral primaries has already prompted US President Donald Trump to express his displeasure in a series of social media posts attacking the state assemblyman's appearance, voice, and intelligence. Trump's tirade Referencing Mamdani's progressive political allies, Trump called him 'a 100% Communist Lunatic". To quote an excerpt from the US President's post on Mamdani: 'We've had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous. He looks terrible, his voice is grating, he's not very smart. He's got AOC+3, dummies all, backing him. Even our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin' Chuck Schumer, is grovelling over him." Trump even sarcastically offered a suggestion to Democrats on how to rebuild their party after their 'loss" in the 2024 election, suggesting they promote a slate of progressive women. 'AOC+3 should be, respectively, Vice President, and three high-level members of the Cabinet. Added together with our future Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, and our country is really screwed!" So why is a 79-year-old Trump riled up by a 33-year-old Mamdani? Remember, Mamdani has represented Astoria, NYC's western province of Queens borough, since 2021. His mayoral platform includes making city buses free, freezing rent increases on rent-stabilised apartments, and opening city-run grocery stores by imposing a 10-billion-dollar tax hike on businesses and the wealthy. But here's why Mamdani is now a thorn in Trump's side: So much so that Zohran has publicly stated that as mayor, he would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a newfound ally of Trump, if Bibi visited New York, citing International Criminal Court arrest warrants issued in November 2024. Mamdani has also led chants in support of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement at pro-Palestinian protests. 'Anti-India, anti-Modi, and anti-Hindu'? But that's not all. The Indian-origin mayoral candidate is also being slammed for being anti-India, anti-Modi, and anti-Hindu. Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut re-shared an X post claiming Zohran once led a mob of protesters in Times Square, abusing Hindus and Lord Ram. Even though Ranaut praised Mamdani's mother, Mira Nair, for being one of India's best filmmakers, she said Zohran sounds more Pakistani than Indian. In fact, she even raised doubts about his Hindu identity and accused Mamdani of trying to wipe out Hinduism. Mamdani was born and raised in Uganda. At the age of 7, he moved to New York City with his family. Interestingly, Zohran's father, Mahmood Mamdani, a Ugandan, has roots in Gujarat. The 33-year-old has condemned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and compared him with Israel's PM Benjamin Netanyahu over the 2002 Gujarat riots. This is why Indian-origin American leaders in New York, like Jaspreet Singh and Jennifer Kumar, have accused Mamdani of using communal rhetoric after he condemned the Indian PM. They have slammed him for using 'divisive rhetoric" in the mayoral elections when crime and housing crises have been the key issues. What are his chances? The question remains: Is Mamdani's commanding lead a sign of his sure-shot victory? Because he now faces another tough task of defeating Mayor Eric Adams and a Republican opponent—and maybe even Andrew Cuomo again—in the general election. All of this while fending off critics who argue that the 33-year-old democratic socialist is too far to the left and already controversy's favourite child in New York City, home to one of the largest Indian American and Jewish populations in the United States.

PMK's S Ramadoss Reasserts Leadership, Opens Door For BJP Alliance In 2026
Chennai: In a dramatic reaffirmation of his control over the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), party founder S Ramadoss on Wednesday declared that he remains the undisputed chief of the party - not his son and former Union minister Anbumani Ramadoss. In a candid interview with NDTV's Sam Daniel, S Ramadoss dismissed Anbumani's leadership. "I will hold the alliance talks, I will decide the seat-sharing. Anbumani doesn't have leadership. He should have gone to every village - he didn't." While refusing to reveal further internal issues, he hinted, "There are some other reasons. I don't want to say them now." Despite the apparent rift, S Ramadoss ruled out any split in the party. "There is no chance of a split. The difference of opinion will be sorted," he said, adding he had not blocked younger leadership. "I made Anbumani Union Health Minister when he was 35. He enjoyed and toured the world." On questions over whether Anbumani could be removed, S Ramadoss was firm: "It's not correct that Anbumani can't be removed. I can call the General Council - everyone will accept my decision." Looking ahead to the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, S Ramadoss said he was open to continuing the alliance with the BJP. "I am happy being part of the BJP alliance. The AIADMK has accepted the BJP alliance. We too can consider it. But the General Council will decide," he said. At the same time, he said the PMK has ideological differences with the BJP on key cultural and linguistic issues. "Hindi imposition is there - we are crying," he said. "The Centre's three-language policy is an indirect way to impose Hindi. PMK doesn't agree with it. Tamil Nadu only wants Tamil and English." On another sensitive topic, S Ramadoss said he agreed with the DMK's opposition to population-based delimitation. "Tamil Nadu will lose its proportion of MPs in parliament if this happens. I agree with the DMK on this." On assessing the DMK's governance over the past four years, S Ramadoss refrained from direct criticism. "I don't want to criticise the ruling DMK. The people will decide," he said. He also condemned remarks made at a recent Hindu Munnani organised Lord Muruga conference in Madurai, where a video critical of social reformers like Periyar and Annadurai was played. "It is very bad to criticise late leaders who are respected by the people. It is not good," he said. S Ramadoss praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's performance in his third term, calling it "very good," even as he acknowledged the BJP had not secured a majority on its own. "But, Modi as PM is performing very well," he said. When asked if the party's declining fortunes - from 20 MLAs in 2001 to just 5 now - were linked to shifting alliances, S Ramadoss was unapologetic. "I am not ready to say anything on past alliances. The past is past. Why should we criticise ourselves?" Defending his family's dominance in the PMK, S Ramadoss said, "Family politics is everywhere in India. I have promised not to take any elected position." The PMK currently has S Ramadoss as founder, Anbumani as president, and Anbumani's son in a rising role.

AAP Leaders Call Case Against 2 Delhi Ex Ministers "Political Vendetta"
New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) launched an attack on the BJP-led central government, questioning the secrecy around the first information report (FIR) registered against former Delhi ministers Saurabh Bharadwaj and Satyendar Jain. The AAP alleged selective media leaks and suppression of the FIR to avoid public scrutiny. "Why hide the FIR if it contains valid allegations? Is it so flimsy that the BJP fears public ridicule?" AAP leaders, calling the case a blatant misuse of investigative agencies. Mr Bharadwaj cited official records showing the hospital projects in question were sanctioned between 2016 and 2018, while he assumed ministerial office only in March 2023. He emphasised there is no proof of corruption in these projects or the HIMS (Hospital Information Management System), which was announced in 2016-17. Mr Bharadwaj, who is also the AAP Delhi chief, questioned why only two former ministers were named in the FIR while all responsible health and PWD officers were spared. He said the Lieutenant Governor's press note on June 24 referred to projects from 2018-19 and 2021, but the anti-corruption bureau chief's press note mentioned only 2017-18 projects, raising questions on consistency. Former minister Satyendar Jain also criticised the timing and nature of the allegations, calling them baseless and politically motivated. The AAP demanded the immediate public release of the FIR, asserting that transparency would reveal the case to be a "mockery of law." The ACB filed the case against Mr Bhardwaj and Mr Jain over alleged embezzlement of funds allocated for health infrastructure projects during the previous AAP government. The case, filed under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, is based on a complaint by former Leader of the Opposition and current assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta. According to the FIR, 24 hospital projects worth Rs 5,590 crore were sanctioned during 2018-2019. However, most of these projects remained incomplete, with significant and unexplained cost escalations. Similarly, a Rs 1,125 crore ICU hospital project comprising seven pre-engineered facilities with a total of 6,800 beds is only 50 per cent complete, nearly three years after it began. Some Rs 800 crore has already been spent, despite the project initially having a six-month completion timeline. The ACB reported unauthorised construction at government hospitals in Jwalapuri by Parnika Commercial and Estate Pvt Ltd and in Madipur by Ramacivil India Construction Pvt Ltd.
