Jock Zonfrillo's final heartbreaking words revealed: Widow Lauren shares MasterChef star's haunting last journal entry that left her 'broken'

Daily Mail05-05-2025

Nearly two years after MasterChef Australia judge Jock Zonfrillo 's shock death, his widow Lauren Zonfrillo has shared the emotional contents of his final journal entry.
Lauren opened up for the first time about the moment she learned the Scottish-born chef, 46, had died alone in a Melbourne hotel room on April 30, 2023.
The celebrity cook, who rose to national fame alongside Melissa Leong and Andy Allen on MasterChef, passed away during the promo tour for the show's new season. His cause of death has never been made public.
In a raw and tearful interview on Spotlight with Seven's Liz Hayes, Lauren revealed the harrowing moment police contacted her in Italy – where she had recently moved with their two children, Alfie and Isla – and delivered the devastating news.
'I was hysterical,' Lauren recalled, her voice trembling.
After trying and failing to reach Jock, she called his hotel and requested a welfare check.
When police phoned back to inform her that a 'deceased male' had been located in his room, her world shattered.
Flying home to Australia, Lauren later viewed Jock's body, describing the surreal moment where it felt like he was still with her.
'He was still there. I could smell his aftershave and hair product. It looked like he was just sleeping,' she said through tears.
'I told him that it'll be okay, that I've got this. That I will make sure the kids live big lives. And that, no matter what, we would be a family.'
But perhaps the most emotional revelation came from a journal Lauren discovered after Jock's passing – a heartfelt collection of thoughts he had written in the lead-up to his death.
In one entry, Jock reflected on his deep love for his young family.
'He wrote about how happy he was that we were finding our feet… how excited he was about raising these little Aussie-Italian-Scottish children,' Lauren shared.
'He always did the voices when putting the kids to bed… and he wrote about missing those things, and how he looked forward to getting to Italy where we were.'
One passage in particular continues to comfort Lauren.
'He wrote… "Lauren didn't see herself, but I think she's just doing so much. She's so capable and I'm really proud she can do those hard things,"' she revealed.
'That meant a lot to me. It was like this message of encouragement. Like, you've got this, Lauren.'
Lauren admitted she often questioned how she would go on without him.
'I do feel broken now. I lost the person I love that much.'
Since his death, there has been speculation surrounding what caused the chef's sudden passing, with some pointing to Zonfrillo's past struggles with addiction and reports he may have been privately battling bowel cancer.
But Lauren pushed back on the narrative that his 'demons' had returned.
She did not disclose a cause of death but confirmed she was told by those who found him that he appeared to have died peacefully in bed.
At the time of his passing, Jock's family released a heartbreaking statement, writing: 'With completely shattered hearts and without knowing how we can possibly move through life without him, we are devastated to share that Jock passed away… So many words can describe him, so many stories can be told, but at this time we're too overwhelmed to put them into words.'
Jock Zonfrillo is survived by Lauren and their two children, who continue to carry forward his legacy – with Lauren vowing to raise them in the same spirit of love and adventure their father cherished so deeply.
A fortnight after Zonfrillo's death his wife led about 200 mourners who gathered for a funeral at Macquarie Park Cemetery and Crematorium at North Ryde on May 13.
Among those who attended the service were celebrity chefs George Calombaris, Matt Moran, Colin Fassnidge, Manu Feildel and Shannon Bennett as well as Zonfrillo's co-stars Allen and Melissa Leong.
Lauren was among the pallbearers and delivered a eulogy before Zonfrillo's friend and fellow Scotsman, Jimmy Barnes, sang Amazing Grace with his daughter Mahalia.
Zonfrillo wrote in his 2021 memoir Last Shot about battling a heroin addiction from his teenage years working as a chef in Glasgow.
After moving to north-west England he sold cocaine and other drugs to supplement his wages, was eventually sacked and at 17 made his way to London.
Zonfrillo wrote that he turned up at Marco Pierre White's renowned restaurant at the Hyde Park Hotel in 1994 and the famed chef became a mentor who would shape his life.
He moved to Australia aged 20 in 1996 and got a job at Forty One restaurant in Sydney where he was using cocaine, pills, LSD and cannabis.
According to his book, Zonfrillo kept a raging heroin habit hidden from everyone before going back to the UK in 1997 when his visa ran out.
He wrote of taking his last hit of heroin in the toilets at Heathrow airport before returning to Australia in early 2000.
Zonfrillo opened his own restaurants, Orana and Bistro Blackwood, in Adelaide in 2013. He added a third, Nonna Mallozzi, in 2018.
The latter lasted six months, Bistro Blackwood closed in late 2019 and Orana in March 2020.
Zonfrillo joined the MasterChef Australia judging panel in 2020 with food critic Leong and restaurateur Allen after original judges Calombaris, Gary Mehigan and Matt Preston left.

Fiona Harvey says she's going blind during 'stress' of Baby Reindeer lawsuit

The woman who inspired Richard Gadd's hit series Baby Reindeer has revealed she is going blind. Fiona Harvey, 59, a Scottish law graduate, is currently at the centre of a multi-million dollar defamation lawsuit against Netflix. Last year the dark comedy was released on the streaming service, which stated at the start that it was 'a true story'. The seven-episode series was written by and based on the real-life experience of Gadd, who plays amateur comedian Donny. Over the course of several years, he is stalked and abused by Martha, played by Jessica Gunning. Following its release, internet sleuths seemingly found the 'real Martha' – Harvey – who has taken the streaming giant to court, demanding £132million for her supposed depiction in the series. Now, however, Harvey has shed light on how she has been diagnosed with background retinopathy. The law graduate told the Record: 'I'm going blind and it's not surprising with the stress I have been under as a result of Baby Reindeer. 'I am diabetic and had always been able to keep my blood sugars under control, but my blood sugars have been wild ever since Richard Gadd's show aired. 'I am not sleeping properly, I'm not able to eat properly, I'm not able to get proper exercise because I'm virtually a prisoner in my own home.' It is said that Harvey received confirmation that she had the illness on Thursday after undergoing eye tests at a London hospital. The condition affects people with diabetes and occurs when high blood sugar levels damage light sensitive tissue. Although people with stage one of the disease do not suffer vision loss, it is more than likely that vision problems will continue over time. According to the Record, a copy of the letter confirms her diagnosis, saying: 'Dear Dr Fiona Harvey, Your test results show that you do have background retinopathy.' Harvey went on to add that her sugars 'were fine' until Baby Reindeer and it 'led to all my physical health problems'. 'I don't have money for proper food. I feel it could lead to blindness very quickly in both eyes,' she continued. Previously, Harvey alleged that the series falsely implied she had sexually assaulted Gadd and had been sent to prison for stalking him. Although Netflix filed a motion in July to throw the suit out in July, a judge ruled towards the end of last year that Baby Reindeer did not live up to its billing as a 'true story' and has allowed Harvey to pursue the court case. Netflix has defended the lawsuit and Gadd's 'right to tell his story', but at the crux is the claim that Harvey has no criminal convictions, unlike Martha. The streaming platform continues to argue in legal papers that the alleged defamatory statements are 'substantially true'. Jason Cummings relives aftermath of Open Goal Live controversy that ended Dundee career

Jason Cummings has opened up on the Open Goal Live storm that triggered the end of his Dundee career. After signing from Shrewsbury Town in January 2021, the 29-year-old striker notched 14 goals in 36 appearances for the Dee until a controversial appearance on stage at the Hydro in Glasgow the following December. Less than 48 hours before Dundee were due to face Hearts in the Premiership, Cummings, dressed as the Joker from Batman film 'The Dark Knight', was featured in a live show staged by popular Scottish football podcast Open Goal. Cummings admitted to having 'a few drinks' to settle his nerves before sharing the stage with Graeme Souness and Paolo Di Canio and footage from the event quickly went viral on social media. The following morning, after turning up for training at Dens Park, the ex-Hibs hit man was sent home by furious Dee boss James McPake, then saw his contract ripped up. Speaking on the latest edition of Open Goal, Cummings, now starring and winning multiple titles in India, lifted the lid on his feelings around the incident, and insisted he never wanted to leave Dundee. 'At the time at Dundee, I wasn't playing, so I thought it wouldn't be a problem,' he said. 'It was the next day when I went in. I was alright to train. But see if I'd never [been on stage at the Hydro], if I'd been in the house, nobody would have known. 'Because everyone saw it, Jazza [James McPake] was fuming. 'It's not a big deal. See if that was in Australia or somewhere like that, nothing would have happened. 'They all love all that stuff – off the pitch, do what you want, as long as you play at the weekend and you do well, you score, then it is what it is. 'When I left Dundee that time, when Jazza sent me home, my old man phoned me halfway through the drive home and he's like: 'What have you done? Have you been sent home?' 'It was in the paper before I even got home! That's what's killed me, it's not in-house, it's been in the paper that I've been let go. That killed me. 'I said to Dundee I didn't want to leave. I was happy. I was top scorer, training unreal, the best trainer, flying. 'But Jazza just made his mind up and that was it done. 'After that, with Australia, having two years there, then India, none of that would have happened otherwise, because I really did want to stay.' Cumming signed for Australian side Central Coast Mariners after leaving Dundee and was part of the Socceroos' squad for the World Cup in 2022. After helping the Mariners to glory in the A-League grand final in 2023, he moved to India with Kolkata-based Mohun Bagan, whom he helped to lift last season's ISL League Shield before claiming victory in the ISL grand final.

Celtic star Alistair Johnston aims cheeky dig at Kevin Bridges as he announces first American tour

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) AFTER two-and-a-half years in Glasgow, Alistair Johnston is well-versed in Scottish slang and has had plenty of time to master the accent. But the Celtic right-back has warned comedian Kevin Bridges that he shouldn't expect the same from all North Americans. 2 Kevin Bridges is heading across the pond this year 2 Alistair Johnston won't be able to catch the comedian in his home city Credit: Kenny Ramsay Celtic-daft Bridges, 38, will head across the pond in September after announcing his first ever American tour on Saturday. Bridges will kick off the tour in Moncton, Canada on September 3 and will finish in Los Angeles on October 18. He's booked in for 20 shows across North America - 11 in Canada and nine in the USA. And the final night in Canada will take place in Johnston's home city, Vancouver, on September 21. The Canadian won't be able to attend the big night given the new football season will already be in full swing by then. Some of his friends and families could be, though, but Johnston admits many people will need subtitles to understand the legendary Scot's routine. Sharing a video on social media as he announced the big news, Bridges wrote on Instagram: "My first ever, EVER America and Canada tour on sale next week…Dates released on Monday." Johnston couldn't help himself as he replied: "🤣🤣 subtitles will be required." The Canadian, 26, wasted no time before trying to learn the Scottish lingo after he arrived in Glasgow in January 1. Just one month after joining he took to social media to reveal he was "taking Scottish lessons" - by watching Still Game. The diggers move in as Celtic Park pitch is dug up Earlier this year, he even revealed that he's tried Irn Bru - but it's not his drink of choice. He told Celtic TV: "I don't mind it. "I'm not going to say I'm a huge fan of it. "If I was to drink it, I'd have to say I need to drink it out of the can because I've seen a couple of people pour it into a glass and when you see the colour of it, it looks like something you'd put in your car."
