Ebbw Vale and Newport eyeing Super Rygbi Cymru final

Ebbw will face Llandovery at Eugene Cross Park for a place in the final after staging a major second half comeback to overcome Carmarthen Quins 45-35.
The Drovers secured their passage in the semis after eventually overcoming Pooler 39-20 after a tense clash at Church Bank.
Meanwhile Cardiff, who beat Bridgend 31-19, stand in the way of Newport and another final.
The Black and Ambers will now go to the Arms Park after coming from behind to beat Aberavon 40-25.
The Wizards had a wind advantage in the first half at Newport Stadium and led 13-5, but that lead had been cut to just a point by the break.
Second half tries from Jac Lloyd, Iestyn Galton and quickfire brace from centre Dai Richards added to first half scores from Lloyd Lewis and Dafydd Buckland to book the Black and Ambers a spot in the last four. Lloyd converted five of the six tries.
Felix Gilbert, Luke Davies, Rhys Thomas and Ashton Evans scored for Aberavon, with Ed Dunford adding five points from the tee.
Newport played half of the second period a man light with scrum-half Buckland and then second row Max Williams in the sin bin, but it didn't prove costly.
Head coach Ty Morris said: 'It was a beautiful day but the wind was gusting right down the field and we were against it first half.
'We made some errors that probably allowed Aberavon to build pressure on us, but we were quite pleased going in only a point behind at half time because of the strength of the wind.
'We felt it was a minimum of a 10-point lead and I'm sure Aberavon would have been disappointed to have only been 13-12 up.
'Our discipline needs to be looked at with the yellow cards but, credit to the guys, we still managed to score 21 points down to 14 men which saw the game off and we scored some lovely tries to finish.'
With Cardiff next up, Morris added: 'We don't fear anyone, home or away, and we know at our best we can beat anyone in the league.
'We've already gone down to Cardiff previously and done that, but what we also know is that, every time we play Cardiff, it's always an arm wrestle.
'We know what to expect; they're a quality team with some quality coaches and we're looking forward to what will be a massive challenge.'
Ebbw also had to come from behind in their quarter-final against Carmarthen.
Despite being huge underdogs Quins threw down the gauntlet to the Steelmen – with three first half tries from Louis Rees, Jac Howells and Lucca Setaro to take a 10-point lead into the break.
Ifan Davies opened the scoring for the visitors with a penalty and then converted all three tries.
Ebbw hit back with a rolling maul try from skipper Joe Franchi with Evan Lloyd converted and then picked up a penalty try.
A try from Canadian international Sion Parry cut the gap to three points at the start of the second half before Davies added another penalty.
Then came two more trademark tries from Franchi to complete his hat-trick.
Scrum-half Gruff Tough then raced clear and Lloyd's goal kicking pushed the home side into a 12-point lead. Setaro grabbed a second for Quins, but a final Lloyd penalty sealed the deal.
Ebbw head coach Jason Strange said: 'The players once again showed a real good spirit.
'Even though our accuracy was off at times, that togetherness they showed was fantastic – and it sets us up now for another semi-final.'
The win also means another clash between Ebbw and Llandovery – who finished second and fourth respectively in the table at the end of the regular SRC season – at Eugene Cross Park this weekend with a place in the final at stake.
The Steelmen are unbeaten at home all season and were victorious over the Drovers home and away which included wrestling the SRC Challenger Shield from Llandovery's grasp.
However Llandovery, Premiership league and cup double winners last year, dominated Ebbw in the final of this season's SRC Cup, winning 39-7. Euros Evans' side were also ruthless in putting Ebbw away 43-7 in their Premiership Cup semi-final last season.
'I think whenever you lose any game, particularly in semi-finals and finals, you always try and take learnings from them,' added Strange.
'We're under no illusions; it's going to take a top performance but it's a challenge that everyone associated with the club are really excited about.'
Pontypool fell just short against Llandovery although, in truth, the final result was harsh on Pooler, with only late tries from Harri Doel and Garan Williams making the gap look bigger than it was.
Doel also scored in the first half with Morgan Jones, Jamie Hughes and Jac Davies also on the scoresheet for the hosts.
Scott Matthews and Rhodri Cole scored for Pooler, both converted by Harri Ford – who also kicked two penalties.
Only trailing 17-13 at the turnaround, Pooler thought they had scored again on the hour when Matthews released replacement hooker Connor Chapman – but it was ruled out by the TMO after Matthews was adjudged offside at the breakdown.

Today's rugby news as Louis Rees-Zammit starts work and England international reveals 'perfect move' to Wales

Today's rugby news as Louis Rees-Zammit starts work and England international reveals 'perfect move' to Wales The latest headlines from Wales and around the world Louis Rees-Zammit undergos medical assessment at Bristol (Image: Bristol Bears) These are your latest rugby headlines on Friday, August 15. ‌ Rees-Zammit gets straight to work Louis Rees-Zammit will join up with his new Bristol Bears teammates today after his move to the Gallagher Prem side was confirmed last night. The 24-year-old sealed his return to English rugby on Thursday, putting pen to paper with the Bears just two weeks after announcing that he would be coming back to the sport where he made his name after spending the last 18 months trying to achieve his dream of playing in the NFL. ‌ The Wales international wing received interest from clubs in England and France, while Cardiff also emerged as surprise contenders to sign him, but Bristol won the race to secure his signature and announced the marquee signing yesterday evening, with Rees-Zammit saying joining the Ashton Gate was the "obvious choice" for him. ‌ Having flown back from America to sign the deal yesterday and undergo a medical, the former Gloucester man is getting stuck in from the off, with his new head coach Pat Lam confirming that he would be joining up with the rest of the squad on Friday. "Louis is a world-class player, and we're thrilled to welcome him back to rugby union and to the Bears this season," said Lam. "Although we have a small squad, we've been building quality depth and experience across the team, bringing in players who can cover multiple positions to help us take that next step in the PREM and in Europe. Article continues below "Louis offers exactly that to our dynamic back three, with his ability and desire to play both full back and wing for the Bears.. He has the drive and ambition to be one of the best back-three players in the world, and his goals align perfectly with our ambitions as a club. 'At just 24 years old, we know the athlete and competitor he is," Lam continued. "The way we play and the way he wants to play fit seamlessly together, and we're looking forward to working with him when he joins the group tomorrow." Meanwhile, Rees-Zammit said: "Bristol Bears was the obvious choice for me. The style of rugby the team play - all about entertaining the fans and growing the game - perfectly aligns to how I want to play and how I express myself on and off the field. ‌ 'I want to get fans out of their seats, create exciting moments and help people fall in the love with the game. I'm excited to return to rugby at a club that demands those values. I'm looking forward to working with my teammates, Pat Lam and the coaches and all the backroom team to bring success to the Bears." McNally: Cardiff was the perfect move Cardiff lock Josh McNally says joining the capital city region last summer was the "perfect move" for him, having been given a new lease of life since moving to Arms Park. The 6ft 7in once-capped England international joined Matt Sherratt's side ahead of last season following a five-year stint with Bath, and played a big role in Cardiff's URC play-off push as he made no fewer than 21 appearances for the Blue & Blacks. ‌ In the end, Sherratt's men finished just one point and one place outside the top eight, with McNally saying he and his teammates are now fuelled by a "huge desire" to go one step further this season. Reflecting on his first season in the capital and looking ahead to the new campaign, the 34-year-old admitted that he had considered hanging up his boots before falling back in love with rugby in Wales. 'It really rejuvenated my love for the game,' said McNally as he discussed the move. 'I think once that fire goes out it's a pretty hard sport to keep playing every week. But I love to come into work every day. It's been a perfect move for me.' ‌ Looking back on last season, he added: 'The play-offs were never really a target of ours at the start of the year. We were just talking about how we were going to grow and get better as a group and enjoy it along the way. 'But then when we got to that period around the end of the Six Nations, we set a goal and we tried to achieve something. We were underdogs all year. No-one gave us a chance. But all year we fought for everything, fought for every match, fought for every win. 'When we went to South Africa for the final two games, I felt like we had made it, that we were pretty much there. It was disappointing that the results went against us, including our own. In the end, we just missed out. But, ultimately, we left Cape Town thinking we had done a good job during the season. ‌ 'When you start goal-setting and looking at where we can go this year, I think it's a massive positive that the goal we set for ourselves midway through last year we pretty much got there and we were unfortunate not to make the play-offs. "I think it was a good season. The group, the club and the organisation grew and we were all just excited to get going this year. That's been reflected in pre-season so far.' On the upcoming season, McNally said there is now a "huge desire" to make it to the play-offs, adding: "We have shown what we can do against good teams. There's a desire now that we want to push that, get better as a group and start putting 80 minutes on the pitch. ‌ 'If you look at the fixtures this year, pretty much every team that we play at home we've got to be targeting that as a result. The way the fans came out last year, I couldn't believe it, some of the games we played here. "So going into this year, there's a huge amount of positivity around the group about what we can achieve and we are just really excited to get out there. Scarlets lock pens new deal Scarlets second row Jac Price has signed a new contract with the region. ‌ The 25-year-old has played 59 games for Dwayne Peel's side since making his debut against the Ospreys five years ago, while he also represented Wales U20s at the World Rugby Championships in Argentina in 2019. He is the latest in a string of players to commit their future to the Scarlets, with the likes of Macs Page, Joe Roberts, Sam Costelow, Taine Plumtree and Johnny Williams among those to pen new deals. 'I'm proud to have signed a new contract and to continue to represent this club," said Price. "I'm a boy from Carmarthen who used to go to watch the Scarlets play at Stradey Park as a youngster. It's big for me and my family. ‌ 'We have a young team who are determined to build on what we achieved at the end of the season in reaching the URC play-offs and qualifying for the Champions Cup. We want to start the season how we finished the last one, in a good place. 'It is great to see the players coming through the academy," he added. "But there's still plenty of older heads like Sam (Lousi) and Jake (Ball), who I can learn off and hopefully I can pass on some of my experience to the youngsters coming through – trying to do what those boys have done for me over the years. Meanwhile, Peel added: 'Jac has become a valued member of the squad having played more than a half century of games for the club. Article continues below 'He has grown up in the region and understands what it means to be a Scarlet. He has played in some big games for the club over the years and is someone who we feel will mature into a leader within the squad.'

Hibs through to Conference League play-off after night of high drama at Easter Road

Hibs are through to the Conference League play offs after a night of high drama at Easter Road that included goalkeeping mistakes, a red card and a contender for goal of the season if not the decade. Hibs went into the game with a two-goal lead thanks to Martin Boyle's double in Serbia last week, but pre-match David Gray insisted that it was only half time. He made four changes to the starting XI that drew with Kilmarnock last Sunday, three expected and one enforced, midfielder Jamie McGrath who missed out due to injury. Elie Youan, Junior Hoilett and Grant Hanley made way for Boyle, Jack Iredale and Kieron Bowie. Hibs almost made the perfect start when Boyle beats his man down the right side and crossed to the unmarked Chris Cadden, but he hurried his effort which went straight at Partizan goalkeeper Marko Milosevic. Then in the 16th minute Milan Vukotic silenced the noisy Easter Road crowd with a long range effort. Hibs keeper Jordan Smith got his hand to the strike but was unable to stop it entering the net. Rocky Bushiri almost equalised but headed Dylan Levitt's cross wide from close range. Campbell looked to have been bundled over in the build up but no penalty was awarded despite the protests. Then just before the break Jovan Milosevic doubled the visitor's advantage but Smith should have done better. His tame shot squirmed underneath Smith's body and rolled over the line. In added time Partizan claimed for a penalty when Mario Jurcevic's cross appeared to strike Warren O'Hora's arm but after a VAR check it was not given and Nikola Simic was booked for his protestations. But with the supporters subdued after losing their advantage Bowie scored a goal that will be talked about for a long time by the Hibs fans. The Scotland striker held off a defender and hit a first time lob from all of 35 yards which arced over Milosevic and in off the post. Easter Road erupted and moments later Partizan went down to 10 men for the second week running when Simic was shown a second yellow fora bad challenge on Bowie. Alasana Manneh replaced Dylan Levitt as Gray tried to hold on to the aggregate lead and there were some groans when five added minutes were added. Despite the numerical disadvantage the visitors piled on the pressure and Smith made amends for his earlier mistakes with a string of fine saves. But with seconds remaining Andrej Kostić slammed the ball home from close range sparking mayhem from the Partizan bench. Hoilett and Youan came on for the start of extra time and it was the Canadian midfielder that set up the winning goal. His through ball found Josh Mulligan who burst into the Partizan box. His shot was saved but the ball fell to Chris Cadden and the full-back made no mistake from close range. His brother Nicky almost wrapped things up after the restart but his header was saved and he kneed the rebound wide of the posts. With the fans roaring them on Hibs managed the game out to a memorable victory and the players lapped up the adulation with a rendition of Sunshine on Leith. After the final whistle Gray told BBC Scotland: 'Delighted for the players. A really unbelievable performance. I really underplayed the magnitude of the first leg to the players, knowing it was half-time in the tie. 'For large spells of the first half the shape was really good, we had the better chances and then there's obviously a couple of mistakes from [Jordan Smith]. 'The character was certainly tested. Half-time came at a good time – I was able to calm them down and then it's all about character. 'It was horrendous for me to watch at times and ultimately it's a brilliant result over two legs. I'm delighted for Jordan Smith for his second-half performance. He made big saves at big times. 'All in all, delighted to get through.' Hibs progress to a Conference Laegue play-off against Legia Warsaw, who lost 5-3 on aggregate to AEK Larnaca in Europa League qualifying tie. Before then, Gray's side travel to Livingston on Sunday for their second-round Scottish League Cup tie.
