Hibs through to Conference League play-off after night of high drama at Easter Road

Edinburgh Reporter13 hours ago
Hibs are through to the Conference League play offs after a night of high drama at Easter Road that included goalkeeping mistakes, a red card and a contender for goal of the season if not the decade.
Hibs went into the game with a two-goal lead thanks to Martin Boyle's double in Serbia last week, but pre-match David Gray insisted that it was only half time.
He made four changes to the starting XI that drew with Kilmarnock last Sunday, three expected and one enforced, midfielder Jamie McGrath who missed out due to injury.
Elie Youan, Junior Hoilett and Grant Hanley made way for Boyle, Jack Iredale and Kieron Bowie.
Hibs almost made the perfect start when Boyle beats his man down the right side and crossed to the unmarked Chris Cadden, but he hurried his effort which went straight at Partizan goalkeeper Marko Milosevic.
Then in the 16th minute Milan Vukotic silenced the noisy Easter Road crowd with a long range effort.
Hibs keeper Jordan Smith got his hand to the strike but was unable to stop it entering the net.
Rocky Bushiri almost equalised but headed Dylan Levitt's cross wide from close range.
Campbell looked to have been bundled over in the build up but no penalty was awarded despite the protests.
Then just before the break Jovan Milosevic doubled the visitor's advantage but Smith should have done better.
His tame shot squirmed underneath Smith's body and rolled over the line.
In added time Partizan claimed for a penalty when Mario Jurcevic's cross appeared to strike Warren O'Hora's arm but after a VAR check it was not given and Nikola Simic was booked for his protestations.
But with the supporters subdued after losing their advantage Bowie scored a goal that will be talked about for a long time by the Hibs fans.
The Scotland striker held off a defender and hit a first time lob from all of 35 yards which arced over Milosevic and in off the post.
Easter Road erupted and moments later Partizan went down to 10 men for the second week running when Simic was shown a second yellow fora bad challenge on Bowie.
Alasana Manneh replaced Dylan Levitt as Gray tried to hold on to the aggregate lead and there were some groans when five added minutes were added.
Despite the numerical disadvantage the visitors piled on the pressure and Smith made amends for his earlier mistakes with a string of fine saves.
But with seconds remaining Andrej Kostić slammed the ball home from close range sparking mayhem from the Partizan bench.
Hoilett and Youan came on for the start of extra time and it was the Canadian midfielder that set up the winning goal.
His through ball found Josh Mulligan who burst into the Partizan box. His shot was saved but the ball fell to Chris Cadden and the full-back made no mistake from close range.
His brother Nicky almost wrapped things up after the restart but his header was saved and he kneed the rebound wide of the posts.
With the fans roaring them on Hibs managed the game out to a memorable victory and the players lapped up the adulation with a rendition of Sunshine on Leith.
After the final whistle Gray told BBC Scotland: 'Delighted for the players. A really unbelievable performance. I really underplayed the magnitude of the first leg to the players, knowing it was half-time in the tie.
'For large spells of the first half the shape was really good, we had the better chances and then there's obviously a couple of mistakes from [Jordan Smith].
'The character was certainly tested. Half-time came at a good time – I was able to calm them down and then it's all about character.
'It was horrendous for me to watch at times and ultimately it's a brilliant result over two legs. I'm delighted for Jordan Smith for his second-half performance. He made big saves at big times.
'All in all, delighted to get through.'
Hibs progress to a Conference Laegue play-off against Legia Warsaw, who lost 5-3 on aggregate to AEK Larnaca in Europa League qualifying tie.
Before then, Gray's side travel to Livingston on Sunday for their second-round Scottish League Cup tie.

United must strive for Euro return

Defender Bert Esselink says Dundee United must aim to be back in Europe next season after showing they can compete in continental Goodwin's side led 4-2 on aggregate against a Rapid Vienna side who reached the quarter-finals last season, before ultimately going out of Conference League qualifying at Tannadice on Thursday on penalties. "We have to strive for that again," said Esselink, who joined United in the summer."I think as a team we are capable of good things. We showed we can be part of these competitions and that we can compete with these kinds of teams. "That's something we can be proud of and have to strive for again until the end of the season."

'One of the most exciting nights at Easter Road in years'

We asked for your views on Hibs' pulsating extra-time win over Partizan Belgrade to reach the Conference League play-off are some of your comments:Gary: A bit like Tina Turner, Hibs don't like to do things easy, they like to do things hard!John: I need a lie down. If i was not already grey and balding I would be after last night. What a rollercoaster of a night, team spirt and never-say-die attitude, the boys showed great self belief. As for Kieron Bowie's goal, eat your heart out I'm glad Jordan Smith redeemed himself with some brilliant saves in the second half. Bowie and Josh Mulligan both outstanding, but all in all excellent Hibs who never gave up and ran themselves into the ground. They've made me proud yet Wowie Bowie, the guy is unplayable, and his special goal gave Hibs belief after losing two despicable goals. Great team effort to make the Unbelievable night at Easter Road. Smith hands them two goals, Bowie scores a goal of a lifetime. Then both teams go toe to toe in a pulsating match which left everyone shattered in the stands. But we are through to the next round. Well done Hibs have ridden their luck in this tie but no one can doubt the character of the group. One of the most exciting nights at Easter Road in Genius, sheer genius. Bowie has the potential to become one of the truly great centre forwards. Icing on the cake of a team performance filled with passion commitment and promise of much more to come. Even our goalie came good second half and extra time with tie-saving stops. Great time to support the Hibees.

Ryan Reynolds told football club about to have 'bigger and more special' rise than Wrexham

Ryan Reynolds told football club about to have 'bigger and more special' rise than Wrexham The owner of a non-league football club claims their rapid rise is more remarkable than Wrexham's, despite the Red Dragons registering three consecutive promotions Ryan Reynolds has been told Truro City's achievements are "more special" than Wrexham's (Image: Jon Hobley/MI News/NurPhoto via Getty Images) Wrexham's Hollywood owners have been warned that the achievements of a non-league football club could soon eclipse their own. ‌ Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac have led the Red Dragons to unprecedented success in the last four years after registering three promotions in a row. The two actors have turned the North Wales outfit from National League nearly men to a Championship team with ambitions of reaching the Premier League in the near future. ‌ However, the owner of National League side Truro City has now claimed their rise is "bigger" and "more special" than Wrexham's. Canadian businessman Eric Perez took over the club in November 2023 as part of the Ontario Inc consortium. ‌ Truro won the National League South title in April this year during the new owners' first full season at the helm. In doing so, they became the first club from Cornwall to gain promotion to the non-league's top tier, and Perez thinks that makes their accomplishments more notable than Wrexham's. "I think what we're doing is even more special than what they've done," Perez told BBC Radio Cornwall. "There are, at the end of the day, five league clubs from Wales. "There's only one club in Cornwall that's even close to the Football League. If we could get there, it would be something that would change Cornwall forever. Article continues below Truro City's owner claims taking the Cornish side to the National League is bigger than Wrexham's achievements (Image: Hugh) "It would weave a patch into the cultural tapestry of a place that has been alive and vibrant for 3,000 years. To be able to do something like that is, to me, what life is all about, so I actually feel like this is bigger than Wrexham could ever be." As well as achieving success on the pitch, Perez and Truro's other investors have been busy improving the club's infrastructure. A new stadium was built on the edge of the city around a year ago to host the team's matches, with a further expansion taking place over the summer. ‌ Unlike Reynolds and Mac, Perez has previous experience of running sports clubs, having owned Cornwall's rugby league side and also had links with Toronto Wolfpack. While Wrexham's meteoric rise might have attracted the attention of King Charles, who visited the Racecourse Ground in December 2022, Truro have their own royal supporter. Prince William was among the people who wrote to the club to wish them good luck for the new season. Article continues below Perez said: "It's just been such a journey. I remember when we first took over the club and we set out some goals, no-one really paid attention. I think everyone's paying attention now, because we are really on the cusp of something huge here playing our first home National League match. "It's been a super hectic off-season. First of all, we've had a stadium renovation that we've done, building a new main stand to accommodate what is now the requirements for this league. Then obviously transitioning the club from hybrid to full-time professional, that's been massive." Whether Truro go on to reach the same heights as Wrexham remains to be seen. But Perez insists he's happy for the club to consolidate its place in the National League for the time being.
