Consumers are beginning to turn away from AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, new data shows
Consumer anger over what has been termed as predatory practices is moving beyond social media. AT&T , T-Mobile , and Verizon have all raised prices in recent months. As a result, rivals including cable companies that have branched out into telecommunication and Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) are gaining customers at a fast clip.

Cox, which has decided to merge with Charter, has approximately 200,000 mobile lines, which is impressive given the company only started offering mobile services across all its markets in January 2023. The company is believed to have been adding 20,000 to 25,000 phone lines every quarter, per data from research institute MoffettNathanson shared by Light Reading .

Overall, the cable industry accounted for 18 percent of total mobile industry gross additions, which is the total number of subscribers added in a period without accounting for cancellations. While impressive, this performance wasn't enough to beat out the Big 3 outdo T-Mobile (around 30 percent), Verizon (nearly 27 percent), and AT&T (approximately 24 percent).
It's easy to make a connection here: some, if not all, of the postpaid pain has been inflicted on AT&T , T-Mobile , and Verizon by cable companies.

As a card-carrying member of the "grass is always greener on the other side" club, I can always feel when I'm about to change my daily driver from a Pixel to an iPhone and vice versa. My daily driver has been an iPhone 15 Pro Max and I had my Pixel 6 Pro connected to Wi-Fi as a limited backup so I could get screenshots and check out new features on Android. My Pixel was supposed to lose Android support after the release of Android 15 but Google added two more Android updates allowing me to keep using the phone up to the release of Android 17. I still didn't feel the call of Android until I installed Android 16 QPR 1 Beta 1 on my Pixel 6 Pro . The software turned the Pixel 6 Pro into a different phone that is more responsive. It also completely fixed any issues with the in-display fingerprint scanner, increased the battery life, and overall it made the phone not only usable but desirable. But I'm not yet ready to completely drop the iPhone for my Pixel, nor did I feel like spending for a new line in order to make calls, send and receive texts, and even take the device with me out of Wi-Fi range. Running through the apps on my Pixel, I found the solution when I stumbled across the icon for Helium Mobile. I remember doing a story on the T-Mobile MVNO in February which noted that Helium offered the first free 5G wireless plan in the U.S. So I decided to sign up for Helium's Zero Plan which offers 3GB of 5G data, 100 minutes of calls, 5GB of hotspot data, and 300 texts each month for the low, low price of zero. Since I still will probably use my Pixel inside, I can hold off on using too much data until I have a Wi-Fi connection. The cool thing is that I now can take my Pixel out with me at times when I'd rather have it accompany me and it isn't costing me a dime. Helium uses T-Mobile's nationwide 5G service (more on that later). Helium's Cloud Point program rewards you for personal data that the other wireless firms take from you without giving you anything in return. For example, if you agree to participate in anonymized location sharing, referrals, and surveys, you can earn points. These points can be redeemed for gift cards to certain stores, streaming services, rideshares, food, and more. So far, I haven't had an issue at all with the 5G service which recently ran at a download data speed of 109 Mbps and an upload data speed of 4.06 Mbps. That indicates that Helium uses T-Mobile 's low-band 600MHz nationwide 5G service as opposed to its 5G Ultra Capacity service that uses 2.5GHz mid-band to deliver a typical download data speed of 200 Mbps to 500Mbps. Still, the service was fast enough to use on the go and calls sounded great. Helium has other plans too. Google Messages is getting a slight modern makeover
Google Messages has started receiving a Material 3 Expressive makeover. Material 3 Expressive is Google's new colorful, customizable, and bold design language. The interface is a part of Android 16, which is in beta right now, but some apps such as Gmail and Photos, and now Google Messages, have already had their first taste of the redesign. According to 9to5Google , only the Google Messages chat interface has received the Material 3 Expressive treatment for now. As is often the case with changes like these, you may not spot them right away, especially if you give the app a cursory glance only, but look closely, and sure enough, some elements of Google Messages have been updated per Material 3 Expressive. Google Messages chat new. | Image Credit - 9to5Google The 'plus' menu at the bottom is also a distinct container now with Gallery, GIFs, Files, Location, etc now residing in pill-shaped containers instead of circles. The menu has the same background as the Google Messages bar with a lower density than before and the icons are no longer colorful. When you tap on the emoji menu, you will be shown a connected button group to switch between Emoji, GIFs, Stickers, and Photomoji. It has also been placed in a rounded container and the tab you select becomes a pill. The search bar has been moved below the button group, so you won't be confused between the message field and the search field. Google Messages users, particularly those with Samsung phones, on the beta version 20250528_00_RC00 should expect to see these changes any time now. The Material 3 Expressive redesign for Android 16 was announced last month during Google I/O's Android Show. It will make the interface emotionally impactful interface, or so Google hopes, and make everything engaging and easier to use.

Gmail is getting a visual makeover that might finally make swiping fun again
Google has started rolling out the Material 3 Expressive design update to Gmail on Android. This is one of the first apps to receive the updated look, but the rollout is still limited, so most users haven't received it yet. That includes many Pixel owners like myself, who are still waiting to see the changes in 3 Expressive was officially introduced last month as part of a larger visual overhaul coming to Android. The new design language builds on Material You, with more vibrant colors, smoother animations, and layered UI elements. It's expected to roll out more widely later this year alongside the second Android 16 QPR beta, but Google is already updating some of its own apps in advance. Gmail is among the first to get the new look. As seen in Google's preview and reports from early users, the changes are noticeable but not drastic. The message list now appears on a rounded card-like background, giving the inbox a more modern feel. The search bar, navigation menu button, and account switcher sit on a separate, more colorful background layer. There's also a new animation when swiping on messages, and the "Compose" button is bolder than before. A Nothing Phone user posted a video of the new swipe animation on Reddit, while another user shared screenshots of the refreshed UI on X (formerly Twitter) from what looks like a OnePlus device. Android Authority also pointed to a Telegram user who shared screenshots of actual emails with the new is not the biggest Material 3 update we'll see, but it does mark an early step toward Google's broader design changes. More apps, such as Google Photos and Messages, are expected to follow in the coming we've covered previously, the goal of Material 3 Expressive is to make Android apps feel more dynamic and visually consistent. While Gmail's update is just getting started, it signals where the platform is headed. For now, the rollout appears to be server-side and staggered, so there's no clear timeline for when it will arrive on all devices. If you haven't received the update yet, you're not alone. It may take some time before Material 3 Expressive reaches everyone. Still, it's exciting to see Google begin this new chapter for Android's design and I can't wait to see this new look appear across the apps on my Pixel.
