The old trick to secure a Verizon loyalty discount is still working, get it before it's taken away

Phone Arena7 hours ago
Verizon recently began taking away its customers' loyalty discounts, leading many to switch carriers. The company seems to be rolling it back, and has just announced a new loyalty discount. But, on top of that, the old trick for getting a discount on Verizon is still working as well. For now, at least.A while back, Verizon users found out that there were multiple ways to get the carrier to gift you a discount. The most reliable method seemed to be to request a transfer out PIN. In an effort to keep you around a little while longer, the company would offer you a loyalty discount. Apparently, this method is still working for now.
The thing is, many of Verizon 's customers were only sticking around because of their discounts. A lot of people would say that the carrier didn't have good coverage in their area, or that the customer support was unsatisfactory, but the cheap monthly bills were good enough to stay. Prior to disabling loyalty discounts, Verizon was throwing them around like candy in a desperate attempt at customer retention. There was a point where the carrier's actions seemed almost nonsensical, and it seemed that Verizon had a pricing crisis. Now, it appears that Verizon miscalculated how many of its users would stick around after losing their discounts.

If you now request a port out PIN, you will likely be offered another loyalty discount, though at this point they should really call them retention discounts instead. This discount can be as high as $20 a month, and may even be more depending on your plan. During Verizon 's aforementioned pricing crisis, some customers were even getting $40 discounts.
You won't even have to talk to a customer service representative if you don't feel like it: the discount can be claimed from within the app. Thankfully, the app isn't being made mandatory for everything just yet, unlike what T-Mobile is doing with T-Life.
If you've been thinking about leaving Verizon , this might be your sign to stay put. Request a transfer out PIN, and see if you get a new loyalty discount. If you do, awesome! However, if you don't, well…you were leaving anyway.

Google will finally allow you to change the icon shapes on Pixel's home screen. Here's what you need to know.

Today, Google launched the Pixel 10, but that's far from everything new from the company. Along with the device premiere, we've also got the latest Android Canary update, which brings a long-awaited icon personalization ability for the home screen of Pixel devices. The August 2025 Android Canary update adds the ability to customize the shapes of the icons on the home screen. Spotted by Android Authority, the customization option allows you to choose one of five preset shapes. Once you open the Wallpaper & Style app, you will notice that the Icons menu has changed. It now allows you to enable icon theming and switch the default circle-shaped icons to something else. The other options are a square, four-sided cookie, a seven-sided cookie, and an arch. The new icon shapes on Android | Image credit — Mishaal Rahman, Android Authority Changing the icon shapes on Android isn't a radically new idea. It was an option on the Pixel Launcher with Android 12, but it was later removed. The change first surfaced in an early beta version of Android 16 last year. In March, a more robust version of it was spotted in the code of the Android 16 Beta 3 release. Then, a menu with six shapes was uncovered. Those were the same five shapes we're getting in the current Canary update, and an extra complex clover option, which is now design changes might seem innocuous at first, but they're quite significant. Icon shapes could easily clash with the contents of some icons, which might be the reason why one of the shapes we've seen earlier is now gone. That's also an easy way to change the appearance of a home screen drastically. Android has always been famous for providing great customization options. Devices like the Pixel 10 and Galaxy S25 Ultra allow much easier customization than the iOS-powered iPhone 16. That's why all finalists in our home screen contest are from Android phones. I love having the opportunity to customize my devices, but I rarely do it. Whenever I've tried changing my home screen too much, I end up with a barely usable setup and shortly return to the default. That's why such a change is not a deal breaker for me, but I appreciate it.

Amazon is switching its Fire tablets to Android, report claims

Vlad, 20 August 2025 Amazon's long-running line of Fire-branded tablets is going to go through some significant changes, according to a new report. The company is allegedly planning to move away from its own Fire OS (which is a fork of Android) and actually use Android proper. The first Fire tablet to run Android will arrive next year, and will cost $400, which is a much higher price point than what we're used to seeing Fire tablets go for. The switch to Android has apparently been a multiyear project for Amazon, and it comes as a consequence of the retailer basically hearing too many complaints from its customers about Fire OS. Obviously, Amazon is hoping that its tablet sales would jump significantly following the switch to Android. There is still a catch here, however. Amazon will be using the open source Android, so there won't be any Google apps preinstalled. Source
