
Pat Phelan's Limbo to seek deal with Abbott after legal action launched
The dispute relates to trademarks and alleged passing-off, according to court filings.
'Limbo has recently experienced massive international growth, and we have a deal agreed with Abbott/Lingo to amicably resolve and address any issues, that works for all parties,' Limbo chief executive and co-founder Rurik Bradbury told the Irish Independent.
'We'll announce more details of our plans and success in international expansion in the coming weeks,' he added.
He said he expects the legal action to be struck out pending a resolution to the spat.
Customers who sign up for the Limbo weight loss plan wear a continuous glucose monitor that's linked to an app on their phone. It's designed to assist customers with dietary changes that will help them to shed weight. It expects those using its system to lose between 3kg and 5kg in a month.
It charges €199 a month for the system, or the equivalent of €149 a month or €99 a month if consumers purchase a six-month and 12-month plan respectively.
Limbo started as VIV (Vitals in View) and later changed its name to Limbo in 2022. Headquartered in New York, Limbo has a research centre in Cork.
Last year, Abbott launched what it said was the first ever consumer-focused 'biowearable' Lingo product.
'Lingo tracks glucose spikes and dips in real time and provides personalised insights and customised coaching, helping people implement healthier habits and pursue better sleep, mood, focus, energy and fewer unpredictable cravings,' it said.

Abbott added that its scientists had spent more than two decades researching continuous glucose monitors.
A spokesman for Abbott did not respond to requests for comment regarding the litigation against Mr Phelan's firms.
Co-founded by Mr Phelan, Limbo's other co-founder is Tony Martin, a physiologist and coach.
In 2022, the company raised an initial €6m in funding in a round led by Hoxton Ventures. The fundraising was also backed by US ex-basketball star Shaquille O'Neal, Irish rugby player Jamie Heaslip and former Apple senior executive Rory Sexton.
This year, the company has embarked on a $12m fundraising round and anticipates having $80m in annual sales by 2027.

Claire's stores to stay open after appointment of administrators
Administrators have been appointed to Claire's, putting around 2,150 jobs in Ireland and the UK at risk. The move was confirmed by the US owners of the fashion accessories retailer. Claire's has 306 stores in Ireland and the UK, 28 of them in Ireland. The owners said they had filed a formal notice to administrators from advisory firm Interpath. Interpath confirmed the appointment of Will Wright and Chris Pole as joint administrators. They are to seek a potential rescue deal for the chain, which has seen sales tumble in the face of weak consumer demand. Claire's stores in Ireland and the UK will remain open, according to the US-based Claire's group and the administrators. However, the adminstrators said that customers will no longer be able to make orders online. Online orders placed and dispatched prior to the administrators' appointment will be delivered as usual, Orders that have not yet been shipped will not be delivered and customers should not be charged for these, as payment is processed on dispatch. All staff will remain in their positions, the company said. Interpath said the administrators will be contacting all employees to "provide further information about what the administration means for them". Interpath Chief Cxecutive Will Wright said: "Over the coming weeks, we will endeavour to continue to operate all stores as a going concern for as long as we can, while we assess options for the company. "This includes exploring the possibility of a sale which would secure a future for this well-loved brand." It comes after the Claire's group filed for bankruptcy in a US court last week. It is the second time the company has done so, after first filing for the process in 2018. Claire's Chief Executive Chris Cramer said: "This decision, while difficult, is part of our broader effort to protect the long-term value of Claire's across all markets. "Taking this step will allow us to continue to trade the business while we explore the best possible path forward. "We are deeply grateful to our employees, partners and our customers during this challenging period." Information for customers All Claire's stores across Ireland and the UK will remain operational. Customers can continue to shop in-store as usual. However, customers will no longer be able to place orders online via Claire's Ireland and UK website. Online orders placed and dispatched prior to the joint administrators' appointment will be delivered as usual. The joint administrators will be unable to deliver orders placed online which have not yet shipped. Customers should not be charged for these orders, as payment is processed on dispatch. The joint administrators are unable to offer refunds for any items bought prior to appointment. It is recommended that all customers check the purchase protection arrangements with their debit or credit card provider (or similar payment provider) to ascertain whether a refund is available via another source. If no refund is available, customers should contact clairescustomers@ to lodge an unsecured claim in the administration. Customers with goods purchased after 13 August 2025 which are of unsatisfactory quality or which are not fit for purpose in accordance with consumer rights legislation should send proof of purchase and specific details relevant to the issue to clairescustomers@

Jewellery chain Claire's appoints administrators to business in Ireland and Britain
The Irish and British businesses of struggling jewellery chain Claire's has fallen into administration, putting 2,150 jobs at risk. The retailer formally appointed insolvency practitioners from Interpath Advisory on Wednesday, a week after the chain's parent group filed for bankruptcy protection in the US. Interpath had been recently tasked by the US parent company to find a buyer for the European operation but, according to reports from the UK, the company struggled to find a financial backer. One industry source said that as many as one-third of its shops might be closed under a restructuring programme. Claire's, known for selling colourful necklaces and bracelets and offering ear piercing services, has 306 stores in Ireland and Britain aimed at the teen and preteen market, and 2,150 staff. The update comes after the wider Claire's group, which operates 2,750 stores in 17 countries, applied for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a Delaware court. The company last week said that it was in discussions with vendors and landlords about the future of its North American stores. Claire's previously filed for bankruptcy in 2018, exiting Chapter 11 in 2022. The Illinois-based group is owned by a group of investment firms, including Elliott Management and Monarch Alternative Capital. It has also had two failed attempts at a stock market IPO. Last week, the group blamed 'increased competition, consumer spending trends and the ongoing shift away from brick-and-mortar retail' for the bankruptcy, as well as 'debt obligations'. The retailer's trading difficulties are understood to have been exacerbated by uncertainty surrounding tariffs imposed on China by the US administration, which is likely to have seen its overheads increase substantially in recent months. The parent company said it has between 25,001 and 50,000 creditors. Claire's Irish and British business is the second high-street brand to battle to maintain a presence on the high street in as many weeks. Galway next month, is seen as the country's flagship event for the food-and-beverage export sector.
