Man charged with SIX count shoplifting spree across town centre
Officers on patrol in Blackburn town centre found that a number of shops had reported being shoplifted by the same offender.
Anthony Eden, 48, of no fixed abode, was identified and arrested on Wednesday, July 23.
He was charged with six counts of theft from shops in the town centre and taken into custody.

Eden appeared in Blackburn Magistrates Court earlier this afternoon (July 25), and will now serve the rest of his recall time in addition to 12 added weeks in prison.

Operation Vulture aims to tackle shoplifting with dedicated officers undertaking hotspot patrolling, increasing their visibility in targeted areas and partnering with shops to share intelligence.
A spokesperson for Blackburn and Darwen Police said: "As part of Safer Streets Summer and Operation Vulture, your local Neighbourhood Policing Team have been increasing high visibility foot patrol in Blackburn Town Centre.
"Whilst on patrol, officers established numerous victim organisations who reported shopliftings by the same offender.

"On 23rd July 2025, Anthony Eden, 48, of no fixed abode was successfully identified and arrested.
"Eden was charged with 6 x Theft from Shop in Blackburn Town Centre and was remanded in police custody to appear before Blackburn Magistrates this afternoon.
"As well as serving the rest of his recall time, he will now serve an added 12 weeks in prison."

Stephen Lawrence killer's bid for freedom delayed over missing information
The public parole hearing for David Norris, one of the killers of Stephen Lawrence, has been postponed. His bid for freedom, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, was adjourned because unspecified information had not been made available to the panel due to hear the case. Norris was jailed for life with a minimum term of 14 years and three months in 2012, after he and Gary Dobson were convicted of Stephen's racist murder in 2011, nearly two decades after the killing. A spokesperson for the Parole Board said: 'The hearing has had to be adjourned due to information directed by the panel not being made available for the case. 'Without all proper information, the panel cannot consider a parole review. 'The panel's priority must be to ensure the relevant information is available, so that they can thoroughly review the potential risks and ensure public protection.' A new date will be set for the public hearing once the information has been provided. Stephen was on his way to catch a bus with his friend Duwayne Brooks in Eltham, south-east London, in April 1993, when he was set upon and killed by a gang of five or six attackers who used a racist term before they struck. Incompetence and allegations of corruption, centred around Norris's drug dealer father Clifford Norris, dogged the investigation into Stephen's death for years. There was also outrage when it emerged that undercover officers from the Metropolitan Police had spied on justice campaigners supporting the family. In 1999 a public inquiry into the case found that the force was institutionally racist, a conclusion repeated by Baroness Casey in 2023 in her review following the rape and murder of Sarah Everard by a serving officer. Parole hearings are normally held in private, but a public hearing was allowed in Norris's case after an application by the media that was backed by Stephen's parents. In a document outlining the decision, it was revealed that Norris now accepts that he was present at the scene of the murder, but claims that he punched Stephen and was not the person who stabbed him. The other suspects in the case were Jamie and Neil Acourt, who have since been convicted of unrelated drugs offences, and Luke Knight. A sixth suspect, Matthew White, died in 2021. The College of Policing is leading a review of the most recent stage of the investigation into Stephen's death after Dobson and Norris were convicted.

Teenager, 18, has ‘three-quarters of scalp ripped off' on funfair ride in Hampshire
An 18-year-old woman has been left with potentially life-changing injuries after her hair reportedly became caught in a funfair ride in Hampshire at the weekend. Emergency services were called to Netley Marsh Steam and Craft show shortly before 11pm on Saturday after the teenager's hair was said to have been trapped in the rollers of a swinging floor. Emma Perry, a nurse from Southampton General Hospital, told the Southern Daily Echo: 'Her friend came off the ride and said she was bleeding, so I offered my services as a first aider. 'When I got up there, I saw that three-quarters of the girl's scalp had been ripped off in what we call a degloving incident.' One woman told the BBC that she had helped provide first aid to the teenager, and that there had been 'shock and panic' at the scene. "One of the girl's friends came down and said how serious it was and some of us offered assistance,' she said. "It's very shocking it could happen on a fairground ride that young children go on. This must never happen again.' In a post on Facebook, the show's organisers said: 'The unfortunate incident that happened at the show last evening is being investigated by the relevant authorities. 'Netley Marsh Steam and Craft Show Ltd are cooperating with all parties involved. No further comment will be made until such time as appropriate and more information is available. 'Any comments made at present on social media are NOT the views of the show organisers and we will continue to support all parties involved. A Hampshire Police spokesperson said: 'We were called at 10.53pm on 26 July with reports that an 18-year-old woman had sustained potentially life-changing injuries to her head while on a ride at Netley Marsh Steam and Craft Show. 'She was taken to hospital for treatment. 'Police attended and have liaised with the Health and Safety Executive.'

Woman attacked and robbed in York
A WOMAN has been attacked and robbed at a property in York. North Yorkshire Police say that in the early hours of Thursday (July 24) some time between 1am and 2.30am a man hit a woman in the face and then left a property in Fetter Lane off Skeldergate in the city centre, after stealing her phone, passport and £2,000 worth of South Korean currency.
