Rangers boss slams team after fans boo drab draw
Rangers captain James Tavernier nodded home from a corner on 14 minutes but the Ibrox outfit couldn't build on their advantage and were eventually pegged back in the 87th minute when Emmanuel Longelo fired in a well-earned leveller for a 1-1 stalemate.
It marks the third consecutive campaign that Rangers have failed to secure victory in their opener, and come Sunday they could trail Old Firm adversaries Celtic when the title holders welcome St Mirren.
In a spectacular post-match summation of his players, Martin, whose side progressed to the Champions League third qualifying round against Viktoria Plzen with a 3-1 aggregate win over Panathinaikos on Wednesday, said: 'I'm very disappointed and a bit hurt and a bit angry at a lot of stuff I saw.
'Motherwell were really good, credit to them. But I said to the players, the problems haven't been tactical, yet. They've been mentality, about energy, about courage, intensity, aggression, to play.
'We haven't started games well enough in the first half in the two European games and then showed a bit more willingness to trust the detail in each other and work.
'And then today, we go ahead and play some OK stuff. Every time we get in the final third, we turn the ball over and make crazy decisions.
'They're either selfish decisions or they're based on anxiety, so we need to get to the bottom of that.
'Because there was far too much stuff that we haven't worked on or haven't seen.
'It's not me digging them out. I take full responsibility for it. But that hurts me more than anything.
'The problem should be tactical, it shouldn't be mentality. So we have too many guys that slip into self-preservation mode. And I think it's been a fact of this club for the last few years for sure.
'So when it's going well, you're all-in, you want to run, you want the ball. It's nice, but when it's not going well, you don't want to run so much, you pick and choose when you want to run.
'You pick and choose when you want to compete and mark your player from a throw-in or a corner.
'You pick and choose when to run back, and it's unacceptable for this sort of club. And for us as a coaching staff, this is not acceptable.
'We're six weeks in, there will be issues. But the issue today is purely mentality.
'So too much ego, too much self-preservation, and you're either all-in all the time or you're not. And if you're not, you just won't play very much.'
Motherwell's new boss Jens Berthel Askou, a former team-mate of Martin at Norwich who was taking charge of his first league game, was disappointed his side did not take all three points.
'I said to players, I was very disappointed on their behalf that they didn't get the win at the end because we did everything we could to get the win,' he said.
'But again, that's down to quality also in these small situations and we'll keep working on that and sharpen that up.
'I think they gave themselves the opportunity to win, and that's where it starts with the effort and with the desperation to go forward and to punish them on their transitions and to really work extremely hard throughout the entire game.
'I was very happy with that and I know that if we are able to put our performances like this over time, that there will be many other opportunities to win games.'

‘We don't do anything different to others' – Kevin Doherty rubbishes Drogheda's time-wasting accusations
Kevin Doherty claims if a certain other League of Ireland club did it they wouldn't receive the same backlash NOT FAIR 'We don't do anything different to others' – Kevin Doherty rubbishes Drogheda's time-wasting accusations KEVIN Doherty feels Drogheda United get a bad rap over their game management. The fourth-placed Drogs could go second in the top flight tonight if they earn a third win in a row by beating Waterford at Sullivan and Lambe Park. Defensively solid, Drogs are regularly dominated in the possession stats but come out on top. But rival fanbases have hated games against the dogged Drogs who have the third-best defensive record in the league. Evan Ferguson backed to be 'big hit in Serie A' by Ireland legend
Evan Ferguson can prove the doubters wrong by taking the Premier League by storm when he eventually returns from Italy. That's the view of Republic of Ireland legend Richard Dunne who feels Ferguson's 'brave' loan move to Roma will be the making of him for club and country. And Dunne points to Arsenal's new €73m recruit Victor Gyökeres as a point in case, considering how the Swede journeyed around to find his form before making it big. Ferguson, 20, has made an instant impact at the Rome giants, smashing six goals in four pre-season appearances going into tomorrow's friendly with Everton. And while four of those came in one game against a lowly Serie D team, Dunne insists that shouldn't matter, as it's all about Ferguson rediscovering his scoring touch. Dunne told Mirror Sport: "I think it's really brave of him to go off, especially when you don't know the language and it's a different culture. Hopefully it's the right move. 'The start he's had has been brilliant. He probably looked at the West Ham move and thought it was the right one. Graham Potter was there and he felt he'd get opportunities but the Premier League has become a place where you need to be proven to get those chances. "Clubs don't have the time to take chances on players. Going to Roma he will get the chance to play every week, playing in big games and in European competitions. He will play with more freedom, where he's one of the main men in the team. It will really benefit him. 'He had niggles and injuries for the last 18 months so hopefully he's going into a season fresh, fully fit and excited about the challenges ahead of him. This can be the making of him and get him back to where he was 18 months ago,' added Dunne, an ambassador for the Irish online casino affiliate Roma's Evan Ferguson celebrates scoring a goal (Image: ©INPHO/Matteo Ciambelli) Arsenal new boy Gyökeres turned into a goal machine for Sporing Lisbon last season, scoring 57 goals for both club and country. But the one-time Brighton player wasn't always living it up in his career. Gyökeres, 27, had to find himself on loan at Swansea and Coventry, before joining the Sky Blues permanently. Out of sight, out of mind, it was there that he rediscovered his scoring touch before landing his move to Portugal. And that's why Dunne feels it's important that everyone takes a step back to remind themselves of just how young Ferguson is. "He had a few bad games and was almost written off, certainly by the English media where it's 'he's not good enough for the Premier League',' said the ex-Manchester City ace. "Gyokeres comes to Arsenal for €70-odd million and he's had to fight away in the lower leagues for a period, not getting games at Championship and Premier League clubs. He went away and made his name in Portugal. Now he's the best player in the world by all accounts! Evan just needs the opportunities. Richard Dunne, seen here in his Manchester City days up against Craig Bellamy of Blackburn Rovers (Image: ©INPHO/Getty Images) 'It may not be 25-goals this season, but as long as he's learning and improving, eventually you're going to see the quality we've all seen since he was a young lad. That's still in there and it will just take time to become the top striker we think he can become.' And Dunne continued: 'It's about getting back on the market, getting goals and getting his confidence up. I'm excited to watch him as it's going to be a really good challenge. If he can reproduce the form he showed in his early days at Brighton, he will be a really big hit in Serie A.' And Dunne has no doubt that an in-form Ferguson will boost Ireland's cause going into the World Cup campaign with September qualifiers against Hungary and Armenia. Portugal are also in the group and the Boys in Green will qualify for the 2026 finals if they finish in top spot, while second place will guarantee a playoff. Dunne said: 'When I played in the Irish team when we had Robbie Keane up front and the impact it has when you have a well-known centre forward up top is huge. The opposition have to take an extra man out to keep them quiet and their focus becomes a little more about that striker and not the rest of the team. If Evan starts making his way around Europe and starts to become that striker that opposition teams fear, he can be that catalyst for Ireland.'

Kevin Doherty hits back at jibes aimed at his Drogheda side
Kevin Doherty doesn't care if Drogheda United are accused of wily game management as he reckons other teams get patted on the back for it. Drogheda go into tonight's home clash with Waterford buoyed after sinking Bohemians away at Dalymount Park last Friday. Fresh from their training camp in Spain - a consolation for their devastating European expulsion - they have won back-to-back games, in the FAI Cup and dominated possession last week but couldn't find any way past a defence that was superbly led by imposing centre-back Conor times when it looked like Bohs were about to get on top, Drogheda would slow down the game with a player needing Gypsies fans were growing increasingly irate in the stands, vocal in their belief that Drogheda were turning to the dark arts to suit their needs. But the FAI Cup holders stuck to their gameplan and won the game four minutes from time, when Welsh striker Josh Thomas slotted home on a devastating counter attack. Asked about stoppages and delays in play, and whether it was a skill to manage games, Drogs boss Doherty said: 'People always say that about us.'Not once did I tell a player to get down. It's nearly like, what's the word? Cried wolf?. Lads are going down injured at times. Maybe people do think that about us.'But if Shamrock Rovers do that they are brilliant at playing the game and game management and all that type of stuff. 'We don't do anything different to any other team and if you actually look back at the stats, we were the least fouled team in the league (at one point this season).' Manager Kevin Doherty celebrates Drogheda United's late win over Bohemians at Dalymount Park (Image: ©INPHO/James Lawlor) Keeley has been in outstanding form for Drogheda, who could move up to second in the table tonight if results go their at his old club this year after a miserable spell at St Pat's, the big centre-back has been one of the best defenders in the league this Doherty said: 'Conor is the most underrated player in the league. I don't want to tempt anything because I want to have him forever. I gave him his debut at 17.'I don't know what other people's opinions are, but mine is that he's one of the best centre halves in the league and I'm delighted that he's here.'Josh Thomas has also signalled his return - from a serious thigh injury in February - with goals in the FAI Cup win over Crumlin United and the winner at Bohs last that game, the on-loan Swansea City striker revealed he could have joined Bohemians over the winter but opted for Drogheda after talking to Doherty. Doherty feels that Drogheda's proven track record of successful loans with players coming from the UK stands to them in that regard. And he added: 'I don't bullshit them and promise them stuff. I could tell him to watch our games on YouTube, as the Cup final and playoff are up there. 'But there's a reason Josh is here and he'll have to tell you why he was sold on us rather than other clubs. 'I'm just delighted to get a player of his quality and to have him for the year. He missed a lot with the injury, so to have him back again is brilliant.'
