Indian national pleads guilty to turtle smuggling at KLIA
Sathaiyan Alagusundaram admitted to the charge after it was read to him in Tamil before Sessions Court Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman.
The court set September 19 for mention before sentencing.
No bail was granted to the accused, who appeared without legal representation.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Mas Izzaty Lokman represented the prosecution.
The offence involved the attempted export of turtles listed under the Fifth Schedule of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010.
The incident occurred at Gate G8 of KLIA Terminal 1 at 10.05 pm on August 5.
Sathaiyan was charged under Section 117(1) of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010, read with Section 511 of the Penal Code.
If convicted, he faces a fine of up to RM30,000 or a maximum one-year jail term, or both. - Bernama

PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Court has fixed three days from Nov 10 to hear the prosecution's appeal against the acquittal of Samirah Muzaffar and two teenagers who were charged with the murder of former Cradle Fund chief executive officer (CEO) Nazrin Hassan. Wan Mohammad Arfan Wan Othman, one of the lawyers representing Samirah and the two teenagers, confirmed the hearing dates when contacted by Bernama. The hearing dates - Nov 10, 11 and 12 - were fixed during case management before Federal Court deputy registrars Wan Fatimah Zaharah Wan Yussof and Mahyun Yusof on Thursday (Aug 14). On Feb 8, 2024, the Court of Appeal upheld the Shah Alam High Court's decision to acquit and discharge Samirah and the two teenagers on the murder charge. The High Court, on June 21, 2022, freed the trio without asking them to enter their defence, after the prosecution failed to prove a prima facie case against them. Samirah, 50, who is Nazrin's widow, the teenagers (now 22 and 19), and an Indonesian woman, Eka Wahyu Lestari, who is still at large, were charged with killing Nazrin, 45, at his house in Mutiara Damansara between 11.30pm on June 13, 2018, and 4am the following day. In upholding their acquittal, the Court of Appeal held that there was insufficient evidence to determine the guilt of the accused. The Court of Appeal also ruled that there was insufficient evidence to prove that the fire was deliberately started, as there was contradicting evidence from the Chemistry Department of Malaysia and the Fire and Rescue Department's investigators. The Court of Appeal held that the testimony surrounding the petrol and the analysis done on it did not use certified methods, and the investigators had skipped crucial steps needed for the analysis of the petrol. - Bernama

Businessman Remanded In RM3.8 Million Negeri Sembilan Land Deal Probe
SEREMBAN, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- A businessman has been remanded for seven days by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on suspicion of submitting false documents in a land sale transaction worth RM3.8 million in Mukim Lenggeng here in September 2022. The remand order, effective until Aug 20, was issued by Magistrate Saiful Sayoti at the Magistrate's Court here today following an application by the MACC. Cops cripple 'Susu Borneo' shoplifting gang operating in three states
MELAKA: Police have crippled a syndicate known as 'Susu Borneo' with the arrest of four members, including a woman, on suspicion of stealing infant formula and powdered coffee worth RM12,600 from mini markets in Melaka, Negri Sembilan and Pahang. Melaka Tengah police chief Asst Comm Christopher Patit said the suspects, comprising a 50-year-old woman and three men aged from 23 to 33 were nabbed at a rented condominium in Kuala Lumpur at 12.05am on Aug 10. "The arrests were made following two police reports lodged on Aug 2 regarding thefts at two mini markets in Taman Paya Emas and Bandar Baru Sungai Udang. "He said based on intelligence gathered, the Criminal Investigation Department team from the Melaka Tengah police headquarters arrested two local men, as well as a Filipino man and woman," he said in a press conference on Thursday (Aug 14). Christopher said a further probe led the police to locate the stolen formula milk in a condominium as well as in a car. He said that the seized items included 72 boxes and 15 packets of infant formula, 12 tins of milk and 22 packets of coffee drinks, as well as a car, four mobile phones, clothing, hats and tools believed to have been used in the thefts. "This syndicate's modus operandi was to disguise themselves as customers, with the female suspect concealing the infant formula inside her clothes and trousers, while two male suspects served as lookouts and another waited outside. "Initial investigations revealed that the syndicate from Sabah has been active since 2011 and in the week before their arrest, they were believed to have committed 12 thefts at premises across the three states," he said. Christopher added that further investigations showed three of the suspects had prior criminal records involving drug offences, theft, and causing injury. He said all suspects have been remanded from Aug 10 to Aug 15 for further investigation, with the case being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft. – Bernama
