Spencer Jones reaches three times, Ben Hess pitches in Yankees' Spring Breakout loss to Orioles
- Carlos Lagrange took the mound for the Baby Bombers. The 21-year-old was terrific as he showed off his 70-grade fastball, touching 100 mph consistently from the get-go. After allowing a leadoff single, he retired the next 11 hitters in a row before Vance Honeycutt beat him to left-center for an inside-the-park homer.
Lagrange finished with a final line of two runs (one earned) on two hits, one walk, and two strikeouts across 4.0 innings.
- Spencer Jones almost made a nice running grab ranging over to left-center on the inside-the-parker, but he wasn't able reel it in. The slugger reached base three times but his only serious damage came in the top of the seventh as he was gifted a double after the left fielder lost it in the lights.
- George Lombard Jr. was quiet at the plate over his first three at-bats, but then he reached in his next two with a walk and a single. The 19-year-old first-round pick was really impressive this spring -- demolishing a pair of homers, including a 414-foot blast that left the bat at a whopping 108.4 mph.
- Jesus Rodriguez drove in two of New York's four runs with a run scoring groundout and an RBI single.
- Ben Hess, the Yankees' first-round pick from last year, made his unofficial pro debut. He cruised through a perfect first inning of work but then allowed a run to score on Dylan Beavers' RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. The 22-year-old struck out 106 batters in 68 innings last year at Alabama.
- Alexander Vargas made a terrific over-the-shoulder running grab on a pop up in shallow right in the ninth.
The Yankees split up to play a pair of 1:05 p.m. games on Sunday, staying in Port Charlotte to face the Rays and in Tampa against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

MINNEAPOLIS — It wasn't pretty, but Detroit Tigers right-hander Charlie Morton shut out the Minnesota Twins for six innings. The 41-year-old, acquired from the Baltimore Orioles at the July 31 trade deadline, struggled to throw strikes with three walks and one hit-by-pitch, but he made pitches in big moments. The Tigers supported Morton by scoring five runs in the first inning, leading to a 7-0 win over the Twins on Friday, Aug. 15, in the second of four games at Target Field. The Tigers accomplished something their hitters have struggled to do for the last month: They beat up a bad starter in the first inning, plus they took advantage of a defensive mistake. He threw just 56.1% of his 98 pitches for strikes. In the first inning, Morton walked back-to-back batters with two outs, but he escaped without damage when he struck out Matt Wallner swinging on a down-and-in curveball. He also retired three batters in a row after Brooks Lee's leadoff double in the second. In the fourth, Morton walked Keaschall and hit Wallner to open the inning, but he bounced back by putting away the next three batters, all on balls in play. Keaschall produced the second and final hit against Morton in the sixth inning. After that, Morton concluded his outing by inducing an inning-ending double play. Two hits for Gleyber Torres Dating back to July 23, Torres entered Friday's game hitting .165 (13-for-79) with four home runs, five walks and 15 strikeouts in 20 games. He had just one hit and no walks in his last four games, spanning 18 plate appearances. The Tigers were never worried about him. "I see a little bit of unlucky outcomes for him," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Thursday, Aug. 14, before the first game of the series. "He's hit the ball pretty hard on a few occasions and hasn't gotten the hits that offset the statistical grab whenever you look at his last 20 at-bats, last 30 at-bats." In Friday's game, Torres collected two hits. Most notably, Torres pulled a cutter from Ohl in the first inning with a 105.3 mph exit velocity for a single, then he scored on Dingler's two-run single for a 3-0 lead. Urìas beats throw to 1st to help the Astros outlast the Orioles, 5-4 in 12 innings
HOUSTON (AP) — Ramón Urìas beat Jackson Holliday's throw to first, allowing Carlos Correa to score from third and the Houston Astros outlasted the Baltimore Orioles 5-4 in 12 innings Saturday night. Urìas helped the AL West-leading Astros to their sixth walk-off victory of the season a night after ending a perfect game bid in the eighth against his old team. Houston increased its division lead to 1 1/2 games. With the bases loaded and one out, Urías — who was 0 for 6 — hit a grounder to third base, but instead of throwing home to get the second out, Jordan Westburg tried for the double play. Enyel De Los Santos (4-3) overcame the automatic runner and kept the Orioles off the board in the 11th and 12th. Jason Alexander allowed two runs on three hits over six innings without issuing a walk, while matching his career high with six strikeouts. Alexander left with the Astros leading 3-2 and, after Bryan King worked around a leadoff single in the seventh, Jose Altuve made it 4-2 when he hit 22nd home run of the season in the bottom of the inning. Orioles top prospect Dylan Beavers to make his major league debut
HOUSTON (AP) — Touted prospect Dylan Beavers is set to make his major league debut after the Baltimore Orioles selected the outfielder's contract from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday. Beavers, rated Baltimore's No. 3 prospect by was the 33rd overall pick by the Orioles in the 2022 amateur draft. The left-hander slugger spent this season at Norfolk, where he hit .304 with 18 homers, 51 RBIs and 23 stolen bases in 94 games. The 24-year-old is expected to boost an outfield that sent center fielder Cedric Mullins to the Mets at the trade deadline. The 6-foot-5, 206-pound Beavers was drafted by Baltimore after three college seasons at California.
