Brisbane coach adamant that former Lions star Joe Daniher will ‘never' come out of retirement to play in Melbourne
Ex-Essendon forward Daniher was only 30 when he announced that he was retiring after helping the Lions win last year's premiership.
Fagan has previously said that if Daniher made the unlikely decision to play again, it would only be for Brisbane.
However, the Melbourne Demons have approached Daniher about playing next season.
'I might've sent him a cheeky text message just to check in with big Joe … but he laughed it off pretty quick,' Demons coach Simon Goodwin told AFL 360.
On Friday, the Daniher matter came up again when Fagan was asked about Carlton star Charlie Curnow being linked with a move to the Gold Coast Suns, whom the Lions meet in Saturday's QClash at People First Stadium.
'I sort of noticed it (the Curnow speculation) going on in the background, but I don't have any firm thoughts on it,' Fagan said.
'It's that time of the year where everything gets speculated on. How many times are people going to come up and say that Joey Daniher's going back to Melbourne?
'It's one of the great jokes of all time – it'll never happen.'
Daniher's previous spot in Brisbane' forward line has been filled for 10 games this season by former Suns player Sam Day.
However, Day won't take on his former club on Saturday, having been named among the emergencies for the second successive match after missing Brisbane's win over Carlton earlier this month for personal reasons.
Fagan has instead again opted to select two ruckmen in Oscar McInerney and Darcy Fort.
'It's been good, but it's still just an experiment. It's just a week-to-week thing,' the Lions coach said.
'We are happy with what we've seen so far (in playing McInerney and Fort). They've both been able to contribute in the ruck, and they've both been able to contribute up forward in little ways.'
However, there will be one change to Brisbane's forward line after Kai Lohmann injured his calf at training.
Lohmann will be replaced by the versatile Zac Bailey, who returns after serving a one-game suspension for rough conduct.
'Zac Bailey can go and play forward. We got a bit of flexibility there, so it's good because you never know what's going to happen down the track. You've always got to be able to cope,' Fagan said.
The Lions have made one other change to the 23 that beat the Bulldogs by 10 points last Friday, with Irishman Conor McKenna replacing the omitted Bruce Reville.
The second-placed Lions can deal Gold Coast's hopes of playing finals football for the first time a blow with a win on Saturday.
'The truth is that the Gold Coast Suns have beaten some pretty good teams this year. The last time they played at their ground they beat (competition leaders) Collingwood,' Fagan said in anticipation of a tough encounter.
'They're a much better version of themselves than we've played against for a long time, so it's a big game.'

Michael Voss to remain Carlton coach after board backs CEO recommendation
Embattled Carlton coach Michael Voss's future is secure after the club's board endorsed a recommendation from new chief executive Graham Wright that he should be retained for 2026. Contracted until the end of next season, Voss's tenure was put on the table at a club board meeting on Wednesday night amid mounting speculation the Blues could follow Melbourne's lead and look for a new coach. Carlton has won just seven of 20 games this season, failing to meet most expectations, after making finals in 2023 and 2024. But on Thursday afternoon a club statement confirmed Voss was safe for next season. 'The Carlton Football Club can today confirm with absolute clarity that its AFL senior coach Michael Voss will remain coach of the Blues into the 2026 AFL season,' the statement said. Michael Voss is safe. Picture:'As communicated by the club in June, incoming CEO Graham Wright has been maximising the final eight weeks of the home and away season to work closely with the football department. 'This has involved clear consultation with players, coaches and staff, producing valuable insights into where the AFL program currently sits, and the necessary steps that need to be taken to take the team forward.' Carlton president Rob Priestley said the club wanted to make 'calm, rational and fully informed decisions' and despite months of poor results backed in Voss. 'The first of these has been in relation to our senior coach, which we are now in a position to provide clarity on following last night's scheduled board meeting,' he said. 'Last night, Graham presented a recommendation to the board of directors that Michael remains as our senior coach into next season. 'This recommendation was unanimously endorsed by the board. Voss leaves Ikon Park during the board meeting. Picture: Glenn McFarlane 'For the last few months Graham and Michael have been meeting regularly, during which time they have been engaged in open and honest dialogue with one another on what is required for us to evolve as a football side. 'Michael's ability to lead our football club this year in the face of incredible pressure has displayed the attributes of a strong and selfless leader. 'Carlton always comes first for our coach, and Graham and Michael share a clear and aligned view on the opportunities to improve football performance. 'We want to make it absolutely clear that Michael Voss is the coach of the Carlton Football Club and he will remain the coach of the Carlton Football Club.' Voss has been in charge of the Blues since 2022, taking them to the preliminary final in 2023 and the finals again in 2024.

NRL 2025 LIVE updates: Payne Haas returns as Broncos take on Storm
Pinned post from 7.17pm Your say – Storm or Broncos? 7.17pm Joey's view: Broncos have the attack to beat the Storm Andrew Johns The knock on this Brisbane team is that they can't win the tough games, that they don't like the pressure of a long arm wrestle within a match. The Storm, on the other hand, love the grind. Are the Broncos prepared to tough it out in the arm wrestle? We're about to find out. Loading The Storm have won 16 of their last 17 games against the Broncos. While Brisbane's second half against Souths was impressive, they were playing a reserve-grade side. Let's see how they go in Melbourne, where the weather will be fine, but freezing cold. Let's hope it's a fast surface. The Storm have been inconsistent and clunky all year, but they've been winning the close games. Harry Grant, if it's possible, has gone up another level since State of Origin. Then you've got the Queensland connection of Grant and Cameron Munster playing against the Broncos. I thought Ezra Mam and Reece Walsh combined really well last week; they are so dangerous when they get together. In several of the tries against the Rabbitohs, they were next to each other in support. That's exciting for Broncos fans. The way they play, I'd just let them go for all-out attack. They look better when they have an attacking mindset, which excites their key players. 7.16pm Welcome Hello and welcome to our coverage of Thursday night footy. It's a blockbuster to kick off round 23 with the Broncos playing for a spot in the top four while Melbourne could overtake Canberra at the top of the table with a win tonight. Payne Haas is back for Brisbane after missing last week's game with an infection, and is a straight swap for Broncos prop Xavier Willison who broke his arm in last week's big win over Souths. For the Storm, Jack Howarth (groin) is replaced by Kane Bradley in the centres, Maroons forward Trent Loiero returns after being rested and Hary Grant will play his 100th game for the club. Kick-off is at 7.50pm AET. Follow along for all the action as it happens.
