Joey's view: Broncos have the attack to beat the Storm
Andrew Johns
The knock on this Brisbane team is that they can't win the tough games, that they don't like the pressure of a long arm wrestle within a match. The Storm, on the other hand, love the grind. Are the Broncos prepared to tough it out in the arm wrestle? We're about to find out.

The Storm have won 16 of their last 17 games against the Broncos. While Brisbane's second half against Souths was impressive, they were playing a reserve-grade side. Let's see how they go in Melbourne, where the weather will be fine, but freezing cold. Let's hope it's a fast surface.
The Storm have been inconsistent and clunky all year, but they've been winning the close games. Harry Grant, if it's possible, has gone up another level since State of Origin.
Then you've got the Queensland connection of Grant and Cameron Munster playing against the Broncos. I thought Ezra Mam and Reece Walsh combined really well last week; they are so dangerous when they get together. In several of the tries against the Rabbitohs, they were next to each other in support. That's exciting for Broncos fans.
The way they play, I'd just let them go for all-out attack. They look better when they have an attacking mindset, which excites their key players.

Welcome
Hello and welcome to our coverage of Thursday night footy.
It's a blockbuster to kick off round 23 with the Broncos playing for a spot in the top four while Melbourne could overtake Canberra at the top of the table with a win tonight.
Payne Haas is back for Brisbane after missing last week's game with an infection, and is a straight swap for Broncos prop Xavier Willison who broke his arm in last week's big win over Souths.
For the Storm, Jack Howarth (groin) is replaced by Kane Bradley in the centres, Maroons forward Trent Loiero returns after being rested and Hary Grant will play his 100th game for the club.
Kick-off is at 7.50pm AET. Follow along for all the action as it happens.

Former champion jockey Larry Cassidy has taken on a mentoring role for apprentice Chelsea Baker

Like a golfer diagnosed with paralysis by analysis, apprentice jockey Chelsea Baker admits she needs to simplify her approach to racing. But she couldn't have much better mentors in Brisbane's top trainer Tony Gollan and former champion jockey Larry Cassidy. Baker celebrated her 24th birthday on Saturday with her first ride in the city, finishing fifth out of eight runners on the John Thomas -trained Expectant in a Benchmark 78 (1400m) won by Gollan's Free Carry at Eagle Farm. The Tasmanian hoop then travelled west to Toowoomba where she had another four rides, steering gelding Einstag to victory in a 3YO Maiden for local trainer Michael Nolan. 'She's coming along really well,' Baker's boss Gollan said. 'Larry Cassidy is mentoring and coaching her now and she's making really good advancements with that. 'She's a terrific person. Over this next month there's a few things that Larry and her will iron out and she'll come here with a valuable 3kg (claim).' Free Carry shoulders the load first-up and gets the win at Eagle Farm! ðŸ'° @emilyyplang @tonygollan @BrisRacingClub — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) August 9, 2025 Baker said she was working to keep things simple when racing, conceding she was 'a month or two away from being really competitive' in Brisbane. 'My head is one of my worst attributes,' she said. 'At times I tend to overanalyse and overthink things but there could be worse things to have as a negative trait. 'My major goal is to ride the metro scene and be competitive. I don't care too much about titles, I just want people to say 'gee that girl can ride'. 'I'd rather be told that I've ridden the horse well and given it every chance than have the horse do it for me.' As a champion jockey who won more than 40 Group 1s in his glittering career, Cassidy is the ideal mentor for Baker, whose parents Kylie and Barry are trainers in Tasmania. Cassidy won the Sydney jockeys' premiership for three consecutive seasons from 1997/98 to 1999/00, and partnered champion mare Sunline to six victories, including two Group 1s in the Flight Stakes and the Doncaster Handicap in 1999. He famously rode Winx in the 2015 Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (now Winx Guineas) to kickstart the mighty mare's record 33-race winning streak. Baker said she drew inspiration from the rapid rise of fellow female jockeys Angela Jones and Emily Lang, who fought tooth and nail for the 2024/25 Brisbane jockeys' premiership, with Jones ultimately prevailing. 'Emily and Ang, they're not only good jockeys but they're really good people too,' Baker said. 'They're definitely jockeys who I look up to and aspire to be like. 'They're very cool, calm and collected in the way they carry themselves and that's something I definitely need to work on myself. 'They're absolute inspirations and the effort they put in behind the scenes, it's really great.' Baker's parents flew up from Tasmania to help celebrate her birthday and although they have been major influences in her career, she doesn't lean on them too much for advice. 'I try not to get too involved, otherwise we butt heads a little bit, especially me and Dad,' she said. 'But they've taught me everything I know and they've got me to the point where I can come up here (to Brisbane) so I'm forever grateful to them.'

Ex- Queensland cricketer's $600 outlay on Tony Gollan filly pays off with Eagle Farm win

The adrenaline rush of seeing his horse Foreign Press storm home to win at Eagle Farm on Saturday beats any feeling that former Queensland Bulls quick Damien MacKenzie experienced on the cricket field. It may have only been a QTIS 3YO Handicap over 1000m, but part-owners MacKenzie and his fellow former Bulls teammate Nick Kruger were literally screaming from the grandstand as jockey Cejay Graham and the Tony Gollan-trained filly crossed the finishing post. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! It capped a terrific day for Gollan, who produced four winners with Free Carry ($4.40), Foreign Press ($5), Amur ($7.50) and Gospel Girl ($2.90). MacKenzie paid just $600 for his share of Foreign Press from an Inglis digital sale late last year and he syndicated it out to a few mates, keeping a slice for himself. The filly has now earnt $123,000, winning two of her three races in a fledgling career that appears promising. 'I'm so stoked,' said MacKenzie, who played five first-class games for Queensland in the early 2000s. 'I say to a lot of people, replacing the high of professional sport and playing for Queensland, you can't replace it. 'The adrenaline rush of this where you've got no control, when they win like that it's sensational. 'You control what you do when you play cricket. If you prepare well then you know you're going to play well. 'With racing you look at the breeding and put them with a good trainer but the rest is up to the horse on the day. 'I played in probably the strongest era in Queensland cricket but this is cool, especially to see where she (Foreign Press) can go as a three-year-old. 'I just love being with the boys and having horses with Tony is awesome. He's super approachable and honest.' Former Queensland Bulls cricketers Nick Kruger and Damien MacKenzie were rapr with their horse Foreign Press. Foreign Press made her debut on a heavy track on the Gold Coast but got skittled at the start and finished sixth. She then won an 800m 2YO maiden at Ipswich last month and Graham's exquisite ride on Saturday further improved her excellent record. Foreign Press beat home Calypso Rocket ($41) by just under a length, with stablemate Impervious ($3.50) third. Gollan's third runner in the sprint, Boomshanka, didn't appreciate the Soft 7 track and finished sixth. 'Out of my three in the race she was the one that was always going to handle the ground,' Brisbane's premier trainer said about Foreign Press. 'She's by Invader, she loves the wet. Impervious was great, she was first-up but probably just peaked on that ground late.' Meanwhile in race two, jockey Ben Thompson continued his golden run since returning from Hong Kong when he saluted on $1.40 pop Razors, the gelding which Sunshine Coast trainer Jack Bruce bought from Godolphin's recent dispersal sale. 'He's fitted into my stable seamlessly,' Bruce said. 'I haven't done too much with him. He arrived fit and healthy and it's just been a matter of keeping him ticking over.'
