Proteas target historic T20 series victory over Australia
Though they have some big series and tournaments coming up, Proteas batter Tristan Stubbs says the national team are fully focused on securing a historic victory over Australia in the T20 International series decider in Cairns on Saturday (11.15am start).
After falling in a 17-run defeat in the opening fixture of the three-match series in Darwin, the SA team hit back to crush their hosts by 53 runs in the second game earlier this week.
This set them up to target their first T20 series victory over Australia since 2009, and their first ever series win Down Under in the short format.
'We're really excited. After the first one it was really important to bounce back and it sets us up well for the series decider,' Stubbs, who was celebrating his 25th birthday, said on Thursday.
Not looking too far ahead
After their tour of Australia, the Proteas were set to tour England, with both series playing key roles in their long-term build-up to the T20 World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka early next year.
And while some of the younger members of the squad were using these tours to try and cement their places in the Proteas squad for the global showpiece, Stubbs said those ambitions would be placed on the back burner this weekend.
With a historic victory on the line, he said they were concentrating entirely on the match that lay ahead.
'We're a young side, so for us to win a series here in Australia would be really cool for us,' said Stubbs, who contributed 37 and 31 with the bat in the previous two matches.
'We go to England straight after this, and we can take momentum, so I think the big goal right now is to win Saturday's game.'
Different pitch and conditions
Having arrived in Cairns on Wednesday, Stubbs said they expected windy conditions this weekend.
Despite potentially challenging conditions, however, the tourists were eager to compete on a new surface after playing the first two matches of the series in Darwin.
'It's a beautiful ground, and I'm glad we're playing on a pitch and not a drop-in. It looks amazing.' Stubbs said.
'It seems like there's a bit of wind around, and the groundsman seems to think it dies down at night, but I think it will definitely play a part.'

Siya Kolisi fired up for No 8 challenge against Wallabies
Captain Siya Kolisi will be playing at eighthman for the Springboks for the first time, having done it at franchise level before. Springbok captain Siya Kolisi is fired up for the challenge of playing eighthman for the Boks for the first time in their Rugby Championship opener against the Wallabies at Ellis Park on Saturday evening (kick-off 5:10pm). Kolisi has played in the position before, most recently a number of times for the Sharks over the past franchise season, but this will be his first time donning the No 8 jersey in international rugby. At Friday's pre-match press conference the Bok captain said that his role wouldn't change drastically, and that he would be largely doing the same job he usually does when playing at flank. He also acknowledged the breakdown threat that the Aussies possess and said that the Boks' loose forward department will have their work cut out for them in the match. 'My role will change slightly in the lineouts and the scrums, but other than that I'll be fulfilling my usual role,' explained Kolisi. 'Playing No 8 at the Sharks certainly helped me, although the role here is different. I'm also not the same type of player as Jasper (Wiese) or Duane (Vermeulen) in terms of my size, so I'm going to give what I can offer. 'The breakdowns are going to be a big area of the game, so myself, Marco (van Staden) and Pieter-Steph (du Toit) have important jobs, although that said, the breakdowns are a team effort.' Confident Wallabies The Wallabies head into the game with plenty of confidence and momentum, off the back of beating the British and Irish Lions in their final game of the series a few weeks ago and will be eager to make a statement and upset the double World Cup winning champs on their home turf. Bethell to become England's youngest cricket captain against Ireland
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM - Jacob Bethell is set to become England's youngest international men's cricket captain after the 21-year-old was named Friday as skipper for next month's T20 international series in Ireland. The talented Warwickshire all-rounder is regarded as one of the rising stars of the English game, even though he has still to score his first professional century in any format. Bethell, however, has still been appointed to lead England in a three-match T20 series against Ireland in Dublin from September 17-21, which will serve as part of the team's preparations for next year's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. He is now in line to become England's youngest men's captain in an international match, breaking the record of Monty Bowden, who was 23 years and 144 days old when he led England in a Test against South Africa at Cape Town in 1888/89. Bethell has featured in just four Test matches but has become a white-ball regular with 13 Twenty20 appearances and 12 one-day internationals to his credit since making his T20 bow in September last year. 'LEADERSHIP QUALITIES' "Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities ever since he has been with the England squads and the series against Ireland will provide him with the opportunity to further develop those skills on the international stage," said England selector Luke Wright. Bethell's most recent international appearance was in the fifth and deciding Test against India at the Oval this month where, having replaced injured red-ball captain Ben Stokes, he managed scores of just six and five, while not taking a wicket with his left-arm spin. But former England captain Michael Vaughan said team management had made a "diabolical" decision to call-up Bethell for such a key match on the back of so little first-class cricket this season. Bethell has been given the chance to lead England after team chiefs decided regular white-ball captain Harry Brook should take a break following the ODI and T20 series against South Africa.
