Proteas target historic T20 series victory over Australia
South Africa have never won a T20 series Down Under. Though they have some big series and tournaments coming up, Proteas batter Tristan Stubbs says the national team are fully focused on securing a historic victory over Australia in the T20 International series decider in Cairns on Saturday (11.15am start). After falling in a 17-run defeat in the opening fixture of the three-match series in Darwin, the SA team hit back to crush their hosts by 53 runs in the second game earlier this week. This set them up to target their first T20 series victory over Australia since 2009, and their first ever series win Down Under in the short format. 'We're really excited. After the first one it was really important to bounce back and it sets us up well for the series decider,' Stubbs, who was celebrating his 25th birthday, said on Thursday. Not looking too far ahead After their tour of Australia, the Proteas were set to tour England, with both series playing key roles in their long-term build-up to the T20 World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka early next year. And while some of the younger members of the squad were using these tours to try and cement their places in the Proteas squad for the global showpiece, Stubbs said those ambitions would be placed on the back burner this weekend. With a historic victory on the line, he said they were concentrating entirely on the match that lay ahead. 'We're a young side, so for us to win a series here in Australia would be really cool for us,' said Stubbs, who contributed 37 and 31 with the bat in the previous two matches. 'We go to England straight after this, and we can take momentum, so I think the big goal right now is to win Saturday's game.' Different pitch and conditions Having arrived in Cairns on Wednesday, Stubbs said they expected windy conditions this weekend. Despite potentially challenging conditions, however, the tourists were eager to compete on a new surface after playing the first two matches of the series in Darwin. 'It's a beautiful ground, and I'm glad we're playing on a pitch and not a drop-in. It looks amazing.' Stubbs said. 'It seems like there's a bit of wind around, and the groundsman seems to think it dies down at night, but I think it will definitely play a part.'

Dewald Brevis belted South Africa's highest Twenty20 individual score with a blistering 125 not out from 56 balls as the tourists stayed alive in the three-match series after a 53-run victory over Australia in Darwin on Tuesday. Australia's decision to bowl backfired as South Africa powered to a massive 218-7 on the back of Brevis' maiden century in international cricket. The 22-year-old rescued South Africa from a shaky 57-3 and dominated a 126-run partnership with Tristan Stubbs (31). "I'm extremely grateful, just happy to be out here on the winning side," said Brevis, who surpassed Faf du Plessis' 119 against the West Indies in 2015. Playing just his ninth T20 international, Brevis smashed eight sixes to leave Australia's powerful batting line-up with an uphill task. Australia's daunting chase was made more difficult after the early wickets of opener Travis Head (five) and Cameron Green (nine). Australia's hopes rested with in-form Tim David, fresh off his match-winning 83 in their 17-run victory in the series-opener at the same venue. Promoted to number four, David started with a trio of boundaries and then bludgeoned several massive sixes, including one that landed on the roof. But David's 24-ball assault ended on 50 when he hit spearhead Kagiso Rabada straight to cover. Australia's chase ran out of steam, bowled out for 165 in the 18th over with quicks Corbin Bosch and Kwena Maphaka picking up three wickets each. "Chasing that down was always going to be tough and we needed a few partnerships, which we couldn't do," Australia captain Mitchell Marsh said. Without several key batsmen for this tour, South Africa had struggled to fire in the opening game. Captain Aiden Markram signalled his intent with a sublime boundary off the first ball of the innings, rattling quick Josh Hazlewood. But Markram (18) fell tamely to a fired-up Glenn Maxwell, who celebrated another wicket when he had Lhuan-dre Pretorius (10) stumped to leave South Africa in trouble. Likened to legendary South Africa batsman AB de Villiers, Brevis turned the innings on its head to power past his previous highest T20 international score of 41. Brevis received a life on 56 when substitute fielder Matthew Kuhnemann fumbled on the boundary off the bowling of an increasingly frustrated Maxwell. Brevis made Australia pay and in a flash he was saluting the crowd after reaching his century with a boundary off his 41st delivery. Maxwell and quick Ben Dwarshuis picked up two wickets apiece in an unusually ragged effort in the field for Australia, whose nine-match T20 win streak ended. The series-decider will be played in the Queensland city of Cairns on Saturday.

Bairstow, Milne and Afghan mystery spinner join Sunrisers East Cape
The Sunrisers Eastern Cape revealed their early hand for the Betway SA20 Season 4 by retaining two regulars and bringing in three new international players when the pre-signings and retained lists were released on Wednesday ahead of the September 9 auction. Proteas power-hitter Tristan Stubbs will remain at St George's Park and will be joined by all-rounder Marco Jansen, who was strategically named as a wild card. The fresh international faces are mystery Afghan spinner Allah Ghazanfar, New Zealand fast bowler Adam Milne and English wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow, who is no stranger to orange having previously turned out for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. The teams were each permitted a maximum of six retained or pre-signed players, comprising a maximum of three South African and three overseas players during the player retention window, which closed on July 18. The teams also strategically completed their six wild-card signings, with all the focus now on the remaining slots and the collective maximum purse of R131m, to be spent on the 84 available slots at the auction on September 9 in Johannesburg. For season 4, a wild card player could be any overseas player or a South African player who was part of the team's squad in season 3.
