Brevis smashes record ton as South Africa level T20 series
The 22-year-old rescued South Africa from a shaky 57-3 and dominated a 126-run partnership with Tristan Stubbs (31).
"I'm extremely grateful, just happy to be out here on the winning side," said Brevis, who surpassed Faf du Plessis' 119 against the West Indies in 2015.
Playing just his ninth T20 international, Brevis smashed eight sixes to leave Australia's powerful batting line-up with an uphill task.
Australia's daunting chase was made more difficult after the early wickets of opener Travis Head (five) and Cameron Green (nine).
Australia's hopes rested with in-form Tim David, fresh off his match-winning 83 in their 17-run victory in the series-opener at the same venue.
Promoted to number four, David started with a trio of boundaries and then bludgeoned several massive sixes, including one that landed on the roof.
But David's 24-ball assault ended on 50 when he hit spearhead Kagiso Rabada straight to cover.
Australia's chase ran out of steam, bowled out for 165 in the 18th over with quicks Corbin Bosch and Kwena Maphaka picking up three wickets each.
"Chasing that down was always going to be tough and we needed a few partnerships, which we couldn't do," Australia captain Mitchell Marsh said.
Without several key batsmen for this tour, South Africa had struggled to fire in the opening game.
Captain Aiden Markram signalled his intent with a sublime boundary off the first ball of the innings, rattling quick Josh Hazlewood.
But Markram (18) fell tamely to a fired-up Glenn Maxwell, who celebrated another wicket when he had Lhuan-dre Pretorius (10) stumped to leave South Africa in trouble.
Likened to legendary South Africa batsman AB de Villiers, Brevis turned the innings on its head to power past his previous highest T20 international score of 41.
Brevis received a life on 56 when substitute fielder Matthew Kuhnemann fumbled on the boundary off the bowling of an increasingly frustrated Maxwell.
Brevis made Australia pay and in a flash he was saluting the crowd after reaching his century with a boundary off his 41st delivery.
Maxwell and quick Ben Dwarshuis picked up two wickets apiece in an unusually ragged effort in the field for Australia, whose nine-match T20 win streak ended.
The series-decider will be played in the Queensland city of Cairns on Saturday.

Rugby Championship kicks off amid uncertain future
New Zealand will do an eight-match tour of South Africa next year, including three Tests, during the August to October window when the Championship is staged. That tour is aimed at boosting the coffers of the two national rugby bodies, and rules out the Springboks and All Blacks being involved in a double-round Championship as well. Australia are set to host the 2027 Rugby World Cup and the Championship has always been reduced from a double to single round in years when the global showpiece takes place. Adding to the long-term uncertainty is South Africa agreeing to an eight-match tour of New Zealand in 2030. Record four-time world champions South Africa and Australia get what could be the last six-round Rugby Championship, at least for the foreseeable future, underway at Ellis Park in Johannesburg. A few hours later, nine-time Championship winners New Zealand take on Argentina in Cordoba. Pre-Championship discussions among Springbok supporters centred around the chances on September 6 of South Africa defeating greatest rivals New Zealand in Auckland for the first time since 1937. The matches against Australia -- they clash again on August 23 in Cape Town -- were rarely discussed as the fortunes of the Wallabies had hit rock bottom in the past two years. Unwanted history Australia created unwanted history at the 2023 World Cup in France by failing to make the knockout stages for the first time. In Cordoba, New Zealand will be favoured to beat Argentina, but the days when an All Blacks victory over the Pumas was taken for granted are over. Three-time World Cup winners New Zealand won 28 of the first 29 Tests against the South Americans, with the other drawn. But the unpredictable Pumas have won three of 10 internationals between the countries since, two of which came in Christchurch and Wellington. "We want to play fast and be really strong at the set-pieces. Our team is really trying to find its identity this year," All Blacks prop Fletcher Newell told reporters in Cordoba. New Zealand warmed up with a hat-trick of victories over France, who lacked many resting stars, including scrum-half Antoine Dupont. Argentina confirmed their hard-to-fathom form by beating the British and Irish Lions in Dublin, then losing twice at home to a severely-weakened England. "The key is to give our backs a plentiful supply of ball. They have the ability to cause problems for any opponents," said Argentina loose forward Marcos Kremer.

Australia recall O'Connor to face champions South Africa
The 35-year-old, who helped New Zealand outfit Crusaders win the Super Rugby title this season, last represented the Wallabies three years ago. Ben Donaldson had been widely tipped for the playmaker role, but he did not make the matchday 23 named by coach Joe Schmidt on Thursday. O'Connor in for the unavailable Tom Lynagh is the only change to the line-up that started a 22-12 victory over the British and Irish Lions in Sydney this month. Lynagh suffered concussion during the final match of a series the Wallabies lost 2-1 and was replaced by Donaldson before half-time. The half-back partner of O'Connor will be another veteran, Nic White, who reversed a decision to retire after the Lions series when first choice Jake Gordon was injured. There is also one change to the bench with Schmidt preferring loose forward Nick Champion de Crespigny to Donaldson. In making that change among the replacements, Australia have switched from a five-three to six-two split between forwards and backs. This decision could trigger a change to the five-three split on the South African bench with head coach Rassie Erasmus hinting he might add an additional scrummager at the expense of a back. There has been speculation that lock RG Snyman could be promoted at the expense of utility back Canan Moodie. "The group has had a good week of preparation, adjusting pretty well to the time zone and the altitude here in Johannesburg," said Schmidt. "There is not many bigger Tests than playing South Africa on their home turf and we know we are going to need to be at our best on Saturday night." Australia want to snap a four-match losing streak against the record four-time Rugby World Cup winners since winning a 2022 Rugby Championship match in Adelaide. Ellis Park in Johannesburg has not been a happy hunting ground for the Wallabies with 10 losses in 11 matches there. The sole victory came in 1963. The other first round match, between Argentina and nine-time Rugby Championship winners New Zealand in Cordoba, will be played later on Saturday.
