Texas softball tops Texas Tech 2-1 in bizarre Game 1 of NCAA Championship Series

The Women's College World Series Championship Series certainly didn't lack drama in Game 1 of the best of three series. In the end, the Texas Longhorns outlasted Texas Tech 2-1 to take a 1-0 lead in the series. The game was a pretty standard pitchers duel through four innings. But in the top of the fifth inning, things got weird. Tech's Logan Helleman, on first base after a UT infield error, attempted to steal second, but was thrown out by Texas catcher Reese Atwood. The call was overturned on video review because of obstruction on Texas infielder Leighann Goode. It was ruled Goode's toe was an inch too far into the basepath, even though her foot wasn't close to the runner. Advertisement Tech capitalized as Mihyia Davis' bloop a single into shallow right field scored Halleman from second. The Red Raiders took a 1-0 lead and the way Tech starting pitcher NiJaree Canady was dominating, it looked like a dark night for the burnt orange. But the weirdness wasn't over. In the bottom of the sixth. Canady had struck out the first two batters in the inning when Kayden Henry slashed a hit to left. She then stole second. Mia Scott reached on an infield hit and also stole second. Texas had runners at second and third with Atwood coming up. Atwood is one of the most feared hitters in college softball, but she is hitless in the postseason. Tech coach Gerry Glasco called for an intentional walk. Canady hasn't thrown an intentional walk all season. Atwood watched the first three pithes go high, but the fourth pitch was low enough to be hittable. Atwood lined the 3-0 pitch into center field plating Henry and Scott to give Texas a 2-1 lead. That was all Teagan Kavan needed in the Top of the 7th. Kavan allowed a base runner, but still got three outs and the complete game win. Advertisement Texas now leads the series 1-0. Game 2 is set for tomorrow night at 7 p.m. CT. Rob Manfred Admits Donald Trump's Role In MLB Decision on Pete Rose Reinstatement

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred surprised fans of the sport when he announced former star player and manager Pete Rose would once again be eligible for induction into the baseball Hall of Fame. Rose had received a lifetime ban, which carried over into his eligibility for induction after it was revealed that he had bet on games as a manager with the Cincinnati Reds. But his case for earning induction as a player was clear-cut, as he was one of the most prolific performers the game had ever seen. In May, Manfred removed Rose and several other deceased players from the ineligible list, explaining that a lifetime ban should not carry over after their deaths. At the time, speculation rose that President Donald Trump had played a large role in that decision, as Trump has long been a vocal supporter of Rose's case for the Hall of Fame. However, Manfred did not underscore any role the president might have played in the decision at the time. Now, however, Manfred has detailed Trump's influence during a news conference tied to an owners meeting on Wednesday. "Obviously, I have respect for the office and the advice that he gave I paid attention to, but I had a lot of other people that were weighing in on the topic as well." Now that Rose as well as Shoeless Joe Jackson have had their lifetime bans lifted, a committee will decide if the players should be inducted into the prestigious hall. Given the recent reversal from the commissioner and strong interest from the president, that induction might be a foregone conclusion. Cubs' Carson Kelly, Added In Minor Move, Is Having Major Impact

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - MAY 28: Carson Kelly #15 of the Chicago Cubs looks on before a game against the ... More Colorado Rockies at Wrigley Field on May 28, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by Matt Dirksen/) Carson Kelly signed with the Cubs last December, only hours after Jed Hoyer had acquired Kyle Tucker from the Astros. Suffice it to say his addition didn't receive a lot of attention at the time. Here's how the Athletic viewed Kelly, who was signed after the Cubs had seen their other targets, Travis d'Arnaud (Angels) and Danny Jansen (Rays) sign elsewhere: 'Kelly figures to be a co-starter with young catcher Miguel Amaya as the Cubs try to upgrade a position group that was among the worst in the game for parts of last season. Amaya made significant in-season adjustments, though, hitting .271 with a .761 OPS after the All-Star break while continuing to build trust with pitchers. Still, with their catching options dwindling, the Cubs had to make a move.'' Amaya was the Cubs' Opening Day starter but Kelly started the second game in that series against the Dodgers in Tokyo, then had a five-RBI game on March 31, in his third start. He followed that up with a three-run homer in his first start at Wrigley Field and steadily hit his way into the middle of the order. The cost to add the 30-year-old Kelly was $11.5 million over two seasons, with a $7.5-million mutual option for 2027. That looks like one of the best bargains in last winter's free-agent market, especially with Amaya expected to miss four-six weeks with a strained left oblique. Amaya, who was having a nice season himself (.280 with four homers, 25 RBI and an .818 OPS in 27 games), injured himself making a throw on May 24. The Cubs promoted veteran Reese McGuire to back up Kelly. McGuire was signed to a minor-league contract in January and was hitting .280 with an .827 OPS at Triple-A Iowa. Kelly had accrued 5.9 fWAR in his first nine seasons. Fangraphs' calculations have him at 1.5 through 38 games this season. Despite being in a time-share with Amaya for most of the season, he ranks behind only the Dodgers' Will Smith among National League catchers in fWAR. Look for Kelly to receive strong consideration for next month's All-Star Game. He is batting .268 with nine homers and a .913 OPS through Wednesday and, per Statcast, is doing an average job behind the plate (despite a -1 grade for framing). Kelly's contract pays him $5 million in 2025 and '26, and includes a $1.5 million buyout for the '27 option. He will add $250,000 if he starts 81 games and another $250,000 for 91 starts. With bat-first prospect Moises Ballesteros crushing the ball in Triple-A (.333 with six homers and an .886 OPS), the Cubs are positioned to possibly trade a catcher. But they're rightfully focused on the postseason after a 38-23 start, making the surplus most likely an issue for the off-season, not the mid-season trade deadline. They're in the enviable position of having depth at the catcher's spot. That's a significant edge they picked up without having to spend heavily.
